Correct, it's free with AC+ (i.e. no cost after the hold is removed).

Awesome, thanks for the info. I'll probably set that up in the next day or two since it's an option. I've got a couple other issues with my 6S Plus aside from the battery problem, so it should solve those while hopefully improving the battery problem.

My 6s has been completely unreliable battery wise since about September. It has got to the point where I have to carry around a portable battery charger everywhere I go. I work overseas in Europe and only come back at weekends to see my family so did not want to waste too much time in an Apple store.

I have Applecare+ but they would not swap the phone as the battery check said it was working fine. I am furious with the whole situation - I have a battery replacement booked but I have no idea when I can next make the trip to the Apple store.

What has happened to Apple? 4 years ago they would have swapped the phone without a second thought.

the weird thing is my 6s plus turned off now at 7% wouldn't come back on plugged into charger comes on at 15%. its on a beta software so always put it down to that (happened three times before) my serial number falls into the faulty time scale, but apple support told me that only 6s are affected not the plus models. not Sure if its just beta software making it turn off around that mark?

Getting excellent battery life on my replacement phone. Set up as new then updated to 10.2 beta. At 27% with over 5 hours useage time. Not sure if it's because of the TSMC chip as had Samsung before? Was only getting about 4.5 hours on my last phone. No battery problems so far (fingers crossed).

The thing my friend is not about (your) NEW phone, but what happens to the NEW BATTERIES, even though your experience is worth noting...
The vast majority of cases has the battery replaced, not the phone.
(Here, in Greece, after the announcement of the battery replacement programme, they offer ONLY that - I have taken my iPhone6s to "info-quest", the authorised service provider here, since Apple has not established an Official Apple Branch - andstill waiting 1 week so far)
Apple will (probably) never admit that there is a chip issue, which will lead to phone replacement programme.
We must hear the voices-experience of those who have their batteries replaced.

I don't think I'll be eligible to do this since I don't have AppleCare. I'll be calling this weekend to see what they say.

I don't have AppleCare and my phone was out of warranty and they offered me Express Replacement - they'll send you a phone ( overnight may cost something ), but put a hold on your CC for the cost of the new phone. They'll send you a label to send your phone back as well, so costs you nothing. They recommended to me to bring the package to a Fedex store to get a receipt rather than just use a drop off box ( I guess for liability if your phone gets lost on it's way back ). When they get the phone back, the hold on the cost of the phone on your CC will be released.

I'm really relieved I went in there a couple days before this happened. My replacement phone has been working as normal. My battery was okay at the time they swapped the phones out, so I was pretty sure, it wasn't just the battery. I feel like I got lucky.

I'd definitely recommend the express replacement so you get a new phone, as from what I've read and my initial feeling about this was that a new battery might not resolve the issue. Even though my in-store experience with the battery replacement sucked ( ended up not getting a new battery ) I'm glad it happened that way, because it prompted me to do the express replacement where I got a whole new phone and battery...my new phone is working much better, no quick drain and no early shutdowns ( reached all the way down to 1% yesterday! )...

Do the express replacement, they send you a new phone. To Apple these days, new sales > customer support...they've reached that "crossover" point to where they're willing to sacrifice happy customers for new ones.

Usually there's just an extra fee if you don't have AppleCare, which is $29 iirc.

I got the fee waived because I mentioned the battery drain issue and my less than desirable experience at the Apple Store...

Good idea. I'll mention that the guy said he would have to charge me since my batttery didn't fail and I'm out of warranty even though it's part of the replacement. Maybe they will waive the fee. How long does it take to get the phone back after it's sent in?

With Express Replacement, the phone they give you is your (permanent) replacement. Mail-in depends on how far you are from the repair centre.

I had them send me one and then I sent mine back when I received the new one. I didn't want just a battery replacement, wanted a whole new phone and battery. :) But they overnighted and it got here less than 24 hours.

I'm not sure how you can just demand for a new phone like that.

Oh okay. So is it a brand new phone? I thought they just sent a loaner until they fixed yours then you sent the loaner back, but honestly, I have never heard of this program before. Another reason I love this site.

Q9 series here in Germany. Battery problems just started last week. Perfect timing. Appointments in the store are only in the middle of a day plus 60 mins to get there plus 60 mins to get back to work equals at least one day off from work. No deal.

Called Apple. Agreed to a mail-in exchange. BUT since I did not purchase a AppleCare+, I won't get a replacement device right away. UPS just picked up my device (it ships to Czech Republic) and I get a replacement "a couple of days later". Hopefully by the end of the week.
I couldn't talk the apple service rep into doing the express replacement but I also did not push too hard (aka ask for the manager etc.). Let's see how quickly I will have my phone back/replacement...

According to my recent chat with Apple Support....batteries are not available under December 5th? Whaaaaaa?

I contacted the premium repair partner here in town and before I could even start explaining my problem, the tech person knew exactly why I was calling. She stated they have been "overwhelmed" with calls from 6s owners looking for repairs. They will order batteries then we can schedule a time to have them installed. We'll see if this solves the problem.

Started an online chat, they wanted to run the diagnostics which they did, apparently there's been no unexpected shutdowns (even though I had one on the 21st) so said they weren't able to do anything.

I told it had several unexpected shutdowns since February, and that most days I could watch the battery suddenly lose 10%+ in a minute but that just got me to the 'you should try backing up and restoring your device'

Just got the box to mail my 6s in. When I started the case with apple via chat they said they won't have supply to repair until December 10th. So I'm sending it tomorrow and we see when it returns.

Yep same thing with mine. They said it would be after December 5th before they'd have batteries. Mine just shut down while talking on the phone, but I'm going to wait until I'm off for Christmas to send it in. That way I won't have to be without my phone at work.

Just had my battery replaced on my 6s @ the store this afternoon.

Was told 1.5 hrs. Was closer to 2hrs.

Charging now to 100% will keep you all posted.

Ordered a 7 yesterday

I took mine in on Monday to Oobe Newmarket (no Apple stores in NZ), they checked the serial number - said that it's in the effected batch but only have 5 batteries in stock with 35 iPhones in front of mine to be done (about 2 weeks for more batteries to come)....

Just to report same shortage of batteries in Norwich, UK. Genius admits they still don't know what's causing it, but that replacing the battery seems to be fixing it...
Will receive email when battery is in stock to be replaced, which according to their system is expected to be around the 12th of December!!

Shutdowns have been happening more frequently, so considering I have apple care, decided to get in touch with apple support to see if they could do an express replacement, like others have suggested.
First rep I spoke to wanted to charge me £79, considering it's only a battery issue, and they'll eventually be back in stock.
I was obviously not pleased with that, so he escalated me to a more senior advisor, who indeed agreed to the express replacement of the whole device, with just the usual credit card charge on hold until the defective unit is returned!
Hopefully the replacement won't have the same issue...
