Typical. If your paying this much for a phone you want the best guts / components available and to have this information hidden is tantamount to a bait and switch. I prefer samsung over TSMC and until these are proven to be identical performance wise and thermal wise, I would not touch any of them.
Why bother with the best components if it is only used to look at photos, make calls and sms?

Thank you, ArmCortexA8. You have really made my day.

I love this guy!

Samsung is a competitor to Apple in the cell phone space. Samsung and Apple are continually in court over millions if not billions of dollars.

I would think twice about insisting I have a Samsung CPU in my iPhone.

No, but seriously, if you're one of those technically inclined, the 2nm difference will indeed make a difference for some. I would go for the 14nm for obvious reasons, but the vast majority will not notice and care less.

How will it make a difference for some? Have you used a 6S with a tsmc chip and compared it to one with a Samsung chip?

I laugh at anyone who trusts chinese (lol taiwanese) before samsung.
They are constantly lying and crying about how samsung is worse and steals from them yet they are unable to compete.

Idiots.

Read up the actual case on the ex-TSMC employee who ended up working in Samsung. He violated an agreement he signed and should be punished as such.

As for not being able to compete..
You do realize they are the largest for-hired foundry in the world right?

WOW. Turns out my wife and I have same phone, one runs hot and has been more laggy. I bet this is the reason. How do I find out which chip we have? Will definitely return one. Why Apple would do this is beyond me.

You'll need a flat tip screw driver, preferably a larger blade one and a 17oz or greater hammer. Take the screw driver, and at a 40 degree angle to the glass, hammer away at it carefully not to get shards of glass in your skin. You'll need this glass when you finish. Once you have the top layer removed, you'll need a flame torch to remove the welds holding the chip in place. On the bottom side of the chip, it'll have a SN 000WHOCARES000

TSMC's reasoning for using inferior technology doesn't change the fact that their 16nm process is less efficient.

16nm was cheaper and easier for TSMC migrate to, with yields nearing their 20SoC process this year. Samsung and Intel went with 14nm this generation instead and will reap the benefits.

Well, all 3 plan to switch to 10nm technology.

Splitting hairs: assuming 100% averagegains (not realistic anyway) from 104.5mm2 at 16nm, the 14nm shrink would be 91.5mm2 - not exactly 10% but within expectations.

TSMC's 16nm features are additionally known to be far larger than the 14nm competition:
So how does Samsung's 14nm process compare with Intel's?

Only if the consumer notices and complains! They're happy to ship inferior components to meet their quarterly goals for Wall St.
You mean like Samsung used to put Qualcomm chips instead of their own in Galaxy S5 shipped to the U.S.?
Are you planning to launch a class action lawsuit against Apple?

As I recall that was allegedly due to differences in the cellular network. Not that it matters - it is irrelevant to Apple.

A better example would be the Retina MacBook Pro, billed as having the greatest screen ever that actually came with either a Samsung screen that met expectations or a dimmer LG screen with ghosting and a dirty color cast. v2 of the LG panel was improved, but Apple was happy to sell v1.
