Don't know if anybody else on here has read about this yet. I'm sure it will be kind of a controversy just like the Toshiba and Samsung SSDs in MacBooks; or the LG/Samsung displays. I'd be curious to know if it is possible to find out what manufacturer made the chip in my phone and any of the other component makers. Little stuff like that is neat to find out, in my opinion.

Then we'll have a debacle like we had here last year, when people found out that the 6 benchmarked slightly faster than the 6 Plus. The mud-slinging and name-calling on this forum was akin to an all-out Android/iPhone flame war. The staff had a hell of a time cleaning it up, if I recall. People are hooked on the numbers game.

You didn't see that it said:

It is not "yet" clear (yay MR added a word to their favorite beginning of a sentence.)

Yes, but some people read that as "It's confirmed that one is better than the other and if I have the wrong one my phone is terrible!"

long time lurker.

funny to see the people who b:confused:ch about samsung do a 180 and play the apple lottery when they find out the samsung chip is better.

Most people on these forums understand that Samsung makes quality components, and that those components have already been used in many Apple products.

Apple diversify supplies so stock wont run out on launch. people cry. Apple uses one supplier, there isn't enough stock. people cry. This is like asking where the kitchen at your local restaurant bought their tomatoes from

Seriously? That many people read MacRumors or other tech sites and will be concerned about this? Jeezus people just enjoy your devices and stop looking for problems!

Typical. If your paying this much for a phone you want the best guts / components available and to have this information hidden is tantamount to a bait and switch. I prefer samsung over TSMC and until these are proven to be identical performance wise and thermal wise, I would not touch any of them.

WOW. Turns out my wife and I have same phone, one runs hot and has been more laggy. I bet this is the reason. How do I find out which chip we have? Will definitely return one. Why Apple would do this is beyond me.

Hold on this is Apple. They are masters at obfuscation of information (hence their stance on specs as a comparison feature), so they won't tell you. You may need x-code to find out which chip.

Oh for crying out loud, this is going to drive the picky people crazy. I will state for the record I do not give a flying fig, pig or poo which of the two manufacturers made my chip. So far my IPhone runs great and it's my favorite iPhone since my beloved iPhone 4. Well done to whomever made the chip that's in it.

Well that's because you have one of the good chips. ;)

No I rreeeeaaallllllllllyyyyy doubt you'd ever notice anything between the two. Your problem is probably unrelated and most likely caused by something in the backup you restored, meaning it's a software issue and a clean restore without the backup would fix it.

this is just asking for a problem. soon people will only want one or the other
Only the 1% of the customer base that lurks on forums and obsesses over tiny manufacturing differences.

They could have entirely different specifications, and most people wouldn't care, as long as they work.

It can't possibly make a noticeable difference. It's 16nm vs 14nm. You're not going to notice any real thermal differences.

Agreed. The difference in geometry means nothing about performance or battery life.
Unless you know exact process parameters, memory efficiency, etc. You know nothing.

This is a non-story unless you are really interested in silicon production.
You could not be more wrong. They mentioned one is made by a 16nm process other is 14nm. The smaller the process the better. The 14nm chip would run cooler, use less battery and even run faster. 12.5% smaller is not insignificant.

The rest simply have no idea what the size of the manufacturing process means in the real world.

When anyone in this thread is able to demonstrate tangible evidence that they are a silicon architect, and/or work at a silicon fab, I'll take anything they say, seriously. It seems a lot of the complaints will likely come from people TOTALLY unaware of how electronics sourcing, supply and manufacturing work, and how supply/demand causes substitute drop-in replacement parts to be perfectly acceptable.
