Wondering if anyone else has come across this. Periodically, I'll open the camera app and the preview will be dark blue for a second and then switch to a black preview with no image showing. If I switch to the video mode, the correct image will appear on the screen, sometimes continuing to work if I switch to the photo setting again, sometimes just going back to a black screen once I switch. Sometimes it takes a restart to fix the issue, other times a lock and unlock seems to do the trick.

I believe others have posted on this issue. I personally would have the iPhone replaced.

i experience this once. blur image at first.. it seems like it hangs... switch to video and it was fine... mine is iphone 7... i had iphone 7 + i never experience this..

I have had my 256GB iPhone 7 plus do this a few times. Dark flickering when i open the camera app. I switch to video and switch back and it seems to remedy the issue...I hope they fix it....kind of annoying when you are trying to take a quick photo.

Happens all the time, pisses me off so much
I had this happening quite regularly (iPhone 6S) after upgrading to iOS10. It didn't happen prior to iOS10.

I've not had it for a while now, and I think it was fixed in iOS 10.2 (on the beta I'm currently on, anyway).

I didn't get the blue screen, but it showed a static and very blurred image of whatever the camera was pointing at when I opened the app. Usually, sliding to video and back to photo fixed it. I logged it as a bug, although bug reports go into a black hole as far as I'm concerned (i.e. I can't follow the progress of them).

Have to agree on everything you said, I submit bugs that are clear and easy to replicate, and they're still there

To all of you in this thread who have the issue I described, have you contacted Apple Support?

There is clearly a number of iPhone 7/7+ users who have this camera issue even on iOS 10.1.1 and Apple doesn't seem to give a ****.

Contact Apple Support, get them to escalate the issue to a senior technical advisor and demand that if the troubleshooting steps they get you to follow doesn't resolve it, that you should have a replacement new iPhone!

Ever since I received my phone from Verizon about once a week or more I go to camera app and the screen is black. I can't zoom or see anything. I switch between front and rear camera and it's all black. The controls and photos tab are all visible but the screen preview is black. Force Closing the app and then re-opening sometimes allows the preview screen to show what your going to take and others it's still black. Going to the lock screen and back to camera sometimes works and sometimes still goes black. A few times I've had to power off the phone then back on to get camera app to work. You can not take a picture when the screen is black. It seems like the camera isn't connected when you open the app. It has not changed with any iOS update. Pretty annoying when you need the camera and it doesn't work.

Did you set the phone up as new or restore from a backup?

If you restored from a backup, try setting it up as a new phone to see if the problem goes away.

Are you running 10.1 or still on 10.0.2?

No haven't taken it to Verizon because I already had the brand new SE I bought fail less than a week out of the box so they gave me a 7 in exchange. Now this phone has had issues since out of the box too but it's been about a month or so.

I just called was told to take it to a Verizon corporate store since I'm within my 14 days and get a replacement device

Currently on 10.1.1
I was going to try to update but idk if that will fix the issue

I'm really disappointed in camera on my 7+. The app itself seems to have a lot of problems. My biggest complaint is I never know what kind of picture I'm going to get. Some pics I take are vibrant and beautiful, others come out to be super "noisy" and very granulated if you will. I'm hoping it's just a software problem. I'll post a sample below

Hopefully this pictures shows what I mean. Baby was right in front of me and it's way noisy.

Portrait mode is beta and it's made clear to be such so I can't "complain" about that but I've had super inconsistent results with it as well.

All these camera issues are super frustrating seeing as how camera was one of the main reasons I upgraded over my 6S+

I get what you mean, but that's a lighting issue. Dim indoor lighting may be the iPhone camera's greatest weakness.

Took mine to Verizon, they couldn't fix the issue, with a soft and hard reset and an update to iOS 10.1.1, sent me to apple, had to wait an hour, got my back camera replaced, with no charge as I'm still under warranty, works great now

May be something I have to consider. Did yours exhibit characteristics I describe of "noisy" pictures? When apple opens 7+ do they reseal it to retain water resistance?

My back camera wasn't working at all, just a black screen, no noise on the front camera though
