Hoping that this is an issue with iOS 10 but most likely it's hardware as I can hear it on the back of the phone when I put my ear to it. I hope apple says something soon about this issue.

If I record a video on iPhone 6S or iPhone 5S I get (more or less) the same noise.

I even get the same noise when recording a video on my iPad Pro 9,7. Of course you have to turn up the volume quite a bit to hear it.

Isn't it just static mic noise?

Well it comes off as sounding like static on the video but my iPhone 6 didn't do this at all. I have an iPad Air 2 and doesn't do that either

I just got my JB iPhone 7 Plus today. I'm restoring from my iPhone 6s. I to am experience the "hissing" sound and since I have a clear case I picked it up and touch the back its really warm

My 7Plus is making this hissing noise. Its whenever the screen is on. In addition to the high frequency noise it also sounds like it pulses or modulates. As soon as the screen goes to sleep it stops. Hope this isn't an issue down the road.

As a 6 Plus owner, I couldn't wait for a "Hopefully" reliable phone after having so many problems with the touch disease and unresponsive display of the crummy 6 Plus. I was on my third 6 Plus, and I never dropped or broke my phone.

Also, many reports I've seen state the phone is under load. Mine is not. Nothing going on except for the screen illuminated and I can hear it.

Sadly I can report I just received my Black iPhone 7 Plus 256 and it has a very detectable Hissing noise under load. And it is less noticeable when the screen is on.

So I just saw another thread. The guy said "

"I am recording in my office and there is not external noise very quite office. I noticed on play back that I get occasional static noise very similar to when I turn to a "snow globe TV station" the noise comes and goes and I don't hear any hissing at all from my phone.
On the other hand if I record the same video, with the same setting and having the lighting earbuds plugged in the static noise if gone...

Ok, Confirmed at the apple store, faulty rear mic =(

The good news is they had a brand new one for me to swap!
Problem is not present in the new phone =)"

So I went ahead and tried what he suggested. Recorded a video normally and there was the static hissing noise in the background. THEN I plugged in the headphones w mic (apple ones) and recorded a video again. Pulled out the headphones and pressed play and NO HISSING OR STATIC.

So it looks like maybe it is the mic?

I did this as well and can confirm that the static is gone when plugging in the headphones

Looks like we found the issue without the help of Apple. I am still going to wait a few weeks before I take it in. Like i said I did do the exchange today and somehow got unlucky enough that the replacement device had the SAME issue. So will wait a week or 2 and then see if the new production devices done have the issue any longer.

I just tested it with headphone plugged in as well and the "noise" is still there. So either the so-called noise has always been there, or I guess I don't have the same hissing as some of the people complaining about this. Hmm...

amazing how they don't deal with it BEFORE release.
they obviously knew about it. obvious fault that should be found during tests.

so my guess, they knew about it and already had first batch made..

Then why is it on older models as well??

oh, was it also on 6??
wasn't aware.
Both on iPhone 6 and 6S - even on iPhone 5S. Some have experienced on iPads as well. And that is what makes this so difficult - some are maybe more likely to hear it than others and some may be holding it to their ear but cannot hear the "noise" unless the phone touches their ear etc.

but they made it sound like it's a new issue with the 7..
weird. i never noticed it anyway.

No issues with my 7. I refuse to put my ear to the back because who does that in day to day use. But I can't hear anything when using it normally.

Mine:
- gets super hot while charging and stays like that for almost an hour after that. Also gets hot while downloading apps.
- both cameras go black quite often, like you can see some stuff, on top of the screen, but it glitches and, you can't use 'em. Had to quit the app 3-4 times.
- if I play music (just to check those new fancy stereo speakers) the whole screen vibrates like crazy.
- rise to wake, wakes too much.
- didn't hear the HISS yet, but I'm waiting for it.

I recorded a video on both my 6S Plus and 7 Plus and I only get the static on the 7 and I frankly dont remember hearing this static on any of my previous devices either (4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 6S, iPad 2,3, Air 2). I also tried plugging in my headphones like was mentioned and the static is still in the recording.

So? I have tested it on iPhone 6/6S, iPhone 5S and iPad Pro 9,7 and all of them have a low noise that can be heard when pressing the ear against the back of the phone - next to the camera - in a quiet room. I am sure it has always been there and that people have not heard it before this was blown up in the media. I don't really think that all of the four devices that I have tested are having hardware issues...

Apple still hasnt responded. Guessing This is a techie thing as of now. Its not hit mainstream yet I guess or mainstream may just not really care.

I have not experienced that on any of my iPads (1, 2, 4, Air 2, 12.9 iPP) nor any of my iPhones (2x iPhone 4, iPhone SE) nor any iPod Touches (4th gen, 6th gen)... I still have them all and tested them... no hiss.

That's not to say that it wasn't present in the past but at the very least it wasn't as prevalent as it appears to be now.

Or maybe you are just not hearing it.

But that's good for you - not that I really believe you ;)

When playing back a podcast over bluetooth, I can make the audio get staticky or skip by pressing the home "button" or putting the phone under load by quickly swiping, opening apps, etc. Doing that also causes the noise (when held to my ear) to spike.

Engineering defect IMO
