They're saving their big guns for next year.

Think about it...
  • Huge anniversary.
  • Brand new Apple headquarters for a huge brand new launch.
  • Completely new design of the iPhone (8).
Plus OLED/mLED production wasn't ready this year. Actually, it could be possible that Apple wants to use mLED and that may be the reason for a delayed redesign. It looks like everything is aligning for a stellar 2017. Huge anniversary, spectacular new HQ, new display tech ready for iPhone production plus of course a new sexy design. Also add a new redesigned MBP line that replaces the MBA.

I still, to this day, believe Apple leak out information at launch day approaches to kill any unrealistic expectations about a product.
I've seen it happen many times now over the years, and it's just all too much to be a coincidence.

it could also just be that they go into mass production like a solid month before they're released hahah

I'm mostly in it for the camera upgrade every year. It looks like the 7 will be better in low light and dynamic range, but not much else. So I'll be waiting for 2017.

Note: if they would put the dual lens in the 7 I'd buy (even if they sold it as a "pro" version). Can't live with the 7+, it's just too big for my pocket.

Good points. I'll switch to the Upgrade Program this year so I'll be ready!

Yes. For $25.

I'd bet a dollar that Monster Cable will launch a gold-plated-connector Lightning Dongle.
For $100.
So the Apple original part will be a (comparative) steal.

It will be interesting if it launches that week. I bought my last two iPhones while on vacation in Canada. My existing phone the 6 was bought on launch day in Mississauga. i just happen to book a flight for the 11 September to Toronto two weeks ago. However, might not be a good time with Sterling down.

sigh, September 2017 is so far away. Maybe I will check out the next Galaxy Note 7 in the meantime. I need a new toy and the next iPhone certainly aint it :D

Me too. I couldn't care less about the 2016 iphones ... unless they slash prices by 1/3 ... then I'd upgrade from my 6+.

... but there are better Androids than Samsung ...
[doublepost=1469300527][/doublepost]Reading the postings of macrumors members here, I think Apple will have a hard time selling these 2016 iPhones ...

especially in non-US-markets where weak currencies and ever-rising-Apple-prices are one more reason not to buy ...

The fact that Apple appear to be once again abandoning the 4" size and losing the headphone jack leads me to think that this iPhone will see the same downward trend in sales that we saw with the iPhone 6s.

Wish it were not so.

Sales are trending downwards across consumer electronics in general and mobile phones in particular because of market saturation, lack of *truly* compelling new innovation, and rising consumer sentiment in holding on to products longer. It's the latter that I find the most interesting -- a waning interest in the constant upgrade madness.

I agree that would be nice. But I'm pretty sure the best camera is not going to be available on the smallest phone as long as the small phone serves as a budget or cheaper entry to iOS. Now I would support Apple making a true flagship small phone and just sell it at a high price. But I think the SE where the phone's specs are good but not the best is what we will get. It is kind of like the iMac where you can't get a great GPU in the 21" version (I think you now can't get any dedicated GPU in the smaller version). You have to buy the 27" version and then max it out.

I don't think that's the strategy. The budget phones will be the older models. I don't think Apple is going to position their new model 4" as anything but a great phone in a smaller size. The budget one will continue to be the SE, 6s and 6plus for next year.

What I never understood was how Jobs was happy with the NeXT OS. Unix and its clucky motif environment wasn't exactly Macintosh.

You know nothing of NeXTSTEP. OS X is NeXTSTEP with all the UNIX underpinnings in tact. NeXTSTEP was also not Motif. It was Display Postscript co-developed by Adobe and NeXT, and it's UI paradigms of the MVC design patterns, and UX have peppered every Operating System since.

The android OS doesn't suck at all either btw

People choose their needs as said above
I came from android and my ex has a Samsung note 5, beautiful phone but it does what all android phones do. They go on the fritz a you need to restart to fix it. They are malware magnets and good luck being able to update them to the next version of android as you are abandoned as a customer immediately after purchasing it.
The android phones have gotten nicer, especially the Samsung flagships, and their UI has gotten nicer too. Google has great engineers and their software as second to none. The problem has always been the disconnect with the gadget makers. That's why even the Nexus phone are inferior to an iPhone.
Unless or until Apple really drops the ball, there is no way I would ever go back to Android. Especially when the best of Google makes its way to the iPhone and even works better on the iPhone.

I've never had any virus or anything on my android devices and yeah updates can be an issue. Not a huge issue for me with how quickly in update my devices.

It's about choice though and that's the beauty of it. I love what Android offers and let's you do things how you wish. Ios is certainly better os but for me Android has far more positives than negatives.

Watching live sport and films for one is better

Apple has always been at war within itself with respect to functionality vs design/looks. The removal of the HP jack means the "Gucci" side of Apple is winning that battle. Too bad, because functionality is actually more important than looks.

This thread continues to prove, persons are using the back of their phones more than the front. Maybe Apple should just cover it up and call it a day.

Not so sure.... My anniversary iPod and Mac did not arrive :(

It will be just a new iPhone, with a three year design release cycle.

I think people are reading too Much into next year being 10 years, Apple are just moving to a three year cycle in my opinion.

I heard they were releasing new Retina MBP's and Mac Pros that week too!

Naa... i'm just kidding. Nobody at that company is working on computer hardware anymore.

They'll release the Mac Pro on September 32.

For most people's needs, it sucks, unless you count "the ability to run on a wide variety of hardware" as a need. That's the big reason it's popular.

For $100.
If it's anything like their HDMI cables, it'll be less reliable than the ones I buy from Chinese eBay sellers for $1 each.

... Dang. Sorry for three negative comments in a row.

Having owned every generation of iPhone , I can honestly that they best OS is the version that came with the unit at launch. The whole getting free OS updates is not such a great thing. I have a number of idevices I wish I had not updated to the latest version, and wish I had the option of rolling back.

I've also had my share of issues on android , it's pros / cons neither is perfect , and both suffer from updates or lack of updates.

Please. The difference from a 4S to a 6 Plus is substantial. I checked my old pictures of my kids taken on a 4S and compared them to last year on my 6 Plus and the 6 Plus is obviously better. I'm quite confused how you could say there was "little improvement". And the video is waaaay better.

Edit: Ninja'd by lordofthereef.

The Iphone still has the best video in the industry BY FAR, not even close.

In photos, If you have time to set up the shot, especially in good light, it has been beaten by the S7, but otherwise it
still is the FASTEST SMARTPHONE CAMERA AROUND (which is something a lot of people seem to disregard strangely).

It is fastest to focus in bad light, fastest to setup for a first shot and fastest shot to shot.
That speed explains it is very good doing video.

Well-known mobile phone leaker Evan Blass has this morning predicted which week of September that Apple will announce the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

iphone-800x289.png

Blass, who has accurately leaked images and details about unreleased smartphones on Twitter (@evleaks) in the past, tweeted today simply "iPhone 2016 release: week of September 12th."

Blass is better known for leaking Android-based smartphone details ahead of their official confirmation, but his prediction for the iPhone 7's launch falls in line with Apple's typical September iPhone announcements - the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launched on September 9th, 2015 - making it a pretty safe bet.

Blass's prediction follows a tweet by the blogger four days earlier in which he claimed the internal codenames for Apple's upcoming iPhones are "Sonora" and "Dos Palos", without specifying which is which (although the latter is a small city in California; the former is a Mexican state). Apple's codenames for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus were "N71" and "N66", respectively.

This year's iterations of Apple's flagship smartphones are widely expected not to feature major design changes aside from the removal of the headphone jack, as the company is said to be deviating from its standard tick-tock upgrade cycle in order to introduce major new features in next year's 10th anniversary "iPhone 8" which take time to develop.

This year the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 is expected to get an improved camera and optical image stabilization, while the larger 5.5-inch model is thought to be gaining a dual-lens camera and 3GB of RAM.

Other rumored features of this year's iPhones include a faster TSMC-made Apple A10 processor, repositioned antenna bands, faster LTE and Wi-Fi, a slightly larger battery, and a minimum 32GB of base storage. A larger 256GB model may also be available.

Once i get the macbook pro with kabylake next year, there is no ipad or iphone for me, the price will decide, if i buy a iphone and ipad, once i get the macbook pro 15inches!

Understood. But was it necessary to make your post 28 bolded font?
[doublepost=1469296656][/doublepost]

Their is no confirmation on the Apple Watch 2 for the September Key Note. As a matter of opinion, the leaks/rumors have been minimal and with Watch OS3, the Apple Watch is considered to be a whole new Watch per say. I would like to see a Watch release as well, but I don't believe it's likely.

Even if there was a "new watch", it is likely only the internals would change. Considering the lower volumes than the phone (which means it can start production very late) and the fact those 14nm S2 chips in that purported Watch 2 would look a lot like the old ones (maybe even produced at the same place), not seeing anything doesn't tell you much.

A long time ago people held onto their consumer electronics for much longer than they do now. In some cases these devices lasted multiple human lifetimes.

(in a galaxy far, far away...)
