iPhone 7 and 7 Plus Pre-Order Shipping Estimates Begin Slipping

I remember all the comments here before the release, how most people claimed that the iPhone 7 is not different enough than the 6S. bla bla bla.
And now....

Considering Timmy said they won't be releasing opening weekend sales numbers because the supply is not going to be ready and now we're seeing one of the worst launch availabilities in iPhone history, isn't it more likely that there's a lack of supply then more demand than previous iPhones?

The iPhone 7 isn't different enough, but the lower demand is still 20-25 million units this quarter, and there's not enough of them even to satisfy that lower demand.

The big advantage of taking pre-orders is they can tailor the product mix on early production, very early in the process. With two new models, five colours and 3 capacities there are 30 - ( gloss black x 2 x no 32gb) = 28.

Then there are the storage spec bumped 6S models too.

With that many models in that many countries, the logistics alone is a spectacular feat. No wonder Steve put Tim in charge.

Well Tim is the man with the logistics background... he might not be the one coming out with exciting new products but I would expect him to be able to deliver this logistic "feat" with flying colors.

Not sure why I need to put in my carrier info for full-price purchases. I mean the whole reason I want to pay full-price is so I don't have to deal with my carrier. But since I have AT&T Premier it means I can only order from AT&T...

It could be calculated for all we know. Having all the units ready for launch and missing sales figures would be detrimental. Not having enough supply is sometimes a good thing when it's calculated and they are sure won't hurt the bottom dollar. Not many companies are the position to do that though, Apple is certainly one of them.

Just clicking through the various options for the 7 at 8.20am EST:

All jet black variants have lengthy shipping times
T-Mobile - all colors/capacities have shipping times pushed out
ATT/Verizon - other than jet black the only constrained model appears to be the 32GB. Most other combinations of color and storage are still available for 9/16 delivery?

Should've never joined the iPhone Upgrade Program last year. Ended up screwing me this year and wasn't even able to get a 7+. Both Apple Stores in my state were completely sold out at 2:03 CDT of 32/128/256 GB 7+ in black and jet black colors.
Apple boasts about how they do everything for the customer... But it's just smoke and mirrors marketing. Such a shame.

Kind of surprised about how things went with the Pre-order this year. Had to keep relaunching the app to get it to come off the "App Store is down" statement. It didn't just load when the store reopened for me.
Had a phone ship date slip while processing the order, they don't even seem to hold it for you for a few minutes while entering required info.
Plus to continually do a pre-sale at 3AM Eastern doesn't seem fair to the majority of the US market, although I'm sure it's by design, to help manage inventory and congestion of the network. Clearly, as always, probably never had enough of the more popular models.
I'm sure the stores will have a few of each model on launch day, as usual, but it looks like certain models will have long waits again for most buyers.

Apple don't release the 'SIM free' phone for a few weeks I think. Until then you can only pay full price for a carrier phone.

Same situation here in Italy.
I've ordered the Jet Black 128 GB 1 second after the scheduled time and the estimated time for the delivery is 26 September - 3 October.
I've also seen that the Jet Black Plus is no more available in the 95% of northern Italy.

And now what? Every Verizon iPhone 7 model is still available for September 16th delivery other than Jet Black which is 3-4 weeks. Most of the 7 plus models are still available in September as well.

So what was your point?

Anyone have experience with the + from previous years? Now that I'm on the upgrade plan, I just reserved the 7 in case, but I have no idea what the protocol is or likelihood my local store will get a 7+ in matte black in in September is. Really don't feel like paying an extra installment on the 6s, so I might just stick with the 7 in matte black. First year it hasn't been easy to get the phone I was looking for, so not sure what to do.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Apple has ever held the date for a phone while you are ordering. I think when I ordered a phone for my dad two years ago the time slipped while I had the phone in my cart and was going through checkout.

I honestly think a 12AM eastern launch would be a disaster. You would likely have a ton more people throughout the country ordering as it would only be 9PM on the west coast and a much more reasonable time to order on the east so even more would stay up to order. Pretty much everything this country does is planned via the eastern time zone, on the west coast we get one win and that is the iPhone pre-order.

As is typical with the iPhone launches, the newest thing tends to run out the quickest whether it is a color or a model. I think we all hope Apple has more supply than they are letting known and ships out a lot more than promised come launch day.

It is carefully calculated and manipulated by Apple. They do this every year to create the illusion of high demand, tight supply. Apple controls everything.

That or no inventory to start with...
Actually you are correct on the inventory. In Pentagon City Washington D.C. there was every model available if the iPhone 7 plus from every carrier for about an hour when preorders started. Here in Richmond VA there were a few available from select carries that you could even pickup in store. T-mobile and Sprint were never available. This was as soon as preorders were started.

Well how else can they inspect it first and then tell us hmm there's a scratch here Or it's damaged and not allow you to upgrade.

When you mail a phone back to a carrier in this fashion, it's inspected and if they find damage, you'll be billed for the repair and/or remaining balance.

In this case, if the phone is damaged, they could bill you for the cost of an Apple Care replacement.

Carriers have been doing it for years. I'd find it hard to believe Apple is unable to do something similar.

Apple eff'd this one up yet again.... server issues, stock depleation almost immediately. Super shady. Funny how ATT and TMO are the same model, yet I can buy a full price ATT model yet I can't buy a TMO "unlocked" model full price. Super super shady. I'm os tired of this game with apple. How is it that on a launch day Samsung can sell 10x the number of Units as apple without stock issues, without ordering issues, yet Apple can't seem to handle 1/10th of the volume.

It's not that people have a run on Apple, as they hold 10% marketshare. It's that Apple just can't manage their own business.

I'm literally over AAPL

Bleh, I'm grateful to be taking a back seat to this one. The 7S which will likely be the one I upgrade to will be marginally better than this year's batch so there may not be this type of backlog of preorders...

The webpage I get when I try to finish my iPhone 7 order: grrr.

I'm in central time and got up and started trying to get in the store app on my phone at 2:01am and finally got in about 2:07. I'm on the IUP so went through the process hoping to get either one of the black models in 256gb. None were available in the one Kansas store, so I went with Silver 128gb. Got to the reservation time slot section and picked my time but it was no longer available. Had to start over and went with gold 128. Not my top choice by far but I'll live with it since I use a leather case. With IUP, it's either reserve for that day or you have got wait to order after 9/17 (or take your chance in line on launch day I guess, did that last year and it was pretty much a joke) so I will be OK with what I reserved. I'm hoping they will have some additional stock and storage sizes for walk ups that aren't spoken for that I can get instead of what's reserved. I'm going to go ask at the Apple Store today to see if that would be possible. Worst case is that I'm a little more tired this morning from getting up in the middle of the night and trying to get back to sleep!

Ok... I ordered iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black 128GB and was told Oct. 10th. If i go and do the old sit and wait at the AT&T store like I've done in the past and manage to get one that morning... can i cancel the online order if it still hasn't shipped?

Do the dates typically get moved up?

I was researching the exact thing this morning, I do not know how AT&T works but with Verizon you can do just that. But you would have to cancel a day of head of time before you go into the store. Sometimes orders get moved up up to a couple weeks, so I am going to see how everything goes. I generally do not have any issue waiting in line and getting one that morning.

This happens every single time a new iPhone comes out it makes me wonder if Apple does it on purpose. Its a excellent marketing strategy to be honest.
