*IF* Apple elected for Stereo speakers on the next iPhone and dropped the Headphone Jack I can imagine there would be a fair few disgruntled commuters in the morning for those who don't have Bluetooth Headphones :-S.

The main problem with BT headphones is the audio quality which is always inferior. The is no such thing as high-end BT headphones. If Apple wants to get rid of the jack they need to invent new wireless protocol and get all the headphone manufacturers to adopt it first.

Glad to see Apple leading the way with innovations like stereo sound.

I've always wondered why Apple never bothered with fake-surround sound. It's such neat tech, even the old Nintendo DS has it and it works great (makes it seem like sound is behind you in a 3D environment). Nintendo nailed it in 2004 and it would be such a nice feature when running games on an iPhone. Oh well! Mono it is!

It seems some people don't know how to read. While the Lightning Connector may be thinner, we can still use the same cables we have currently.

This.

The actual port is a lot smaller than the hole in the case.

Just the hole in the case with no port.

I believe the iPhone 7 lightning port will be just the size of the port itself, like on the ATV4 remote

"I was thinking about getting a new phone. What do you have?"
"iPhone"
"Cool. Which model?"
"iPhone"
"But which iPhone? What year?"
"Uh, iPhone?"
"Why's this so complicated?"

"Hello, how can I help you?"
"What's your price on the iPads?"
"Which iPad are you referring to?"
"The medium one I think."
"Ok, the medium one that came out this spring or the medium one that came out last spring or the one that came out the winter before?"
"Do those all have model names so I can check your prices?"
"iPad."
"Seems confusing."

"I'm looking to get a new iPad. Want to buy my old one for $200?"
"Maybe - which model is it?"
"iPad"
"Duh. Never mind."

This would be the same "simple" mess with Macs, except for the tacit release-date naming scheme that gets around the awkward lack of hardware version identifiers. But the iOS market is far different, for many reasons, and I really doubt Apple's ever going to try ditching model version numbers again with the iOS devices after trying that with the inexplicable and misguided naming of "the New iPad" (aka iPad 3).

Using model version numbers is simple.

Anyways...

We've been buying MacBooks and MacBook Pros for years without quoting a number.

Anyone buying online or by phone will either know what they want to order, or the salesperson will help them.

Sure, an underlying model number will exist, but the naming scheme can be clear and easy to follow without incrementing end numbers.

It's shaping up to be a good replacement for my 6 Plus. I might go with the 4.7" this time around, but we'll see what else we find out between now and September!

So they are going to add new features, give it a new interface port, remove the only industry standard port it had, and make it thinner and thereby reduce the battery size.

Yeah sounds like a winner.

"So they are going to add new features"
Correct.

"give it a new interface port"
No, the lighting port remains untouched, read the article.

"remove the only industry standard port it had"
Correct.

"and make it thinner and thereby reduce the battery size."
Not necessarily. iPhones have got progressively thinner yet the battery size (and battery life) has progressively increased.

Apple are now repeating the mistakes of the pre Jobs era, there is simply too many SKU's for their products, in this case the iPhone and iPad line, they need simplified.

While Apple don't officially sell the 5c it is still available from carriers, but being a non tech savvy consumer who wants an iPhone or iPad must be a confusing experience now. Numerous iPad mini's, two iPad Air's, an iPad Pro and possibly a 9.7" iPad Pro to supersede the Air line up.

As for iPhone you'll have the 5c, 5s, SE, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus all available to you depending on where you shop.

The product line up needs simplified, massively.
You MR Forums users are amazing: for YEARS, literally, I read people here complaining about the little choice Apple was giving us about form factors.
pages and pages of threads about "one size doesn't fit all"....
Now Apple is giving us TOO MANY choices... lol

... because all we need is a thinner phone. Ive should stay in the UK permanently and be out ot the loop ;)
Because only on this kind of forums people keep speaking about how thin the new iPhone will be....
I'm much more interested about the SoC it will use, the camera, the display.

That's a good reason, because you don't use it.
Well, MY usage is quite important for ME...

BTW, as long as they provide me an alternative way to connect an headset , I'm ok with a change.

I don't mind if they change the headphone jack, but I won't buy another iphone if the lightning port serves that function.

It will result in either cable fraying, or damage to the lightning port/cable connection from being pushed back and forward when you walk with the phone in your pocket.

The picture you posted have nothing to do with the connector itself, but with the cable and the way it was managed...
I could show you a lot of 3,5mm jack ruined cables....

It's unlikely it's the same MR members that complained about not having enough choice who are now complaining about too much choice.

The MR forum users don't all have exactly the same opinion and it wouldn't be a very interesting place if they did.

And because 3.5mm is a nice open standard that most products use, when a 3.5mm cable breaks its a nice cheap replacement, not like the overpriced prices that the proprietary lightning connector uses.

With headphones, which is the main use for the 3.5mm port, if the connector goes so does your set of headphones.

Yeah sounds like a winner.

And this is why I applauded Samsung for not going thinner with the S7, and putting a bigger battery in (and for leaving the headphone port).

A lot of expensive headphones have a seperate cable (at least the ones I've had do), and anyway, I don't think I've ever had a 3.5mm connector break on a set of headphones, its usually something else that goes, where as I think since 2014 (when I got my first lighting enabled device) I've had 3 go. I'm not hard on my cables, I've had some of my other cables for over 10 years with no issue.

This is all sounding good to me. Change is unavoidable and so far every change, although somewhat painful, has been for the better in the long run. I can't imagine in 5-10 years we won't look back and remember the time when we had to have all these goofy cables. But the change has to happen at some point and it might as well be this year.

Can you even get true stereo sound with speakers so close together? I thought the near field effect required more distance. I've never wanted stereo sound from my iPhone speaker.

So Apple is gonna have a iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7+ and a iPhone 7 Pro... All with different specs... Wow, its gonna be their downfall.

Apple, We want same feature on all the phones

You can get your Performa in a variety of model configurations haha. Back in those days we needed a chart to keep all the duplicate computers with different model numbers straight.

That's a really good point. I buy headphones in the $150 range. I'm not sure I would do that for a pair with a lightning jack as they fail too frequently. I've never had a 3.5 fail. I'm sure Apple plan is for us all to switch to Bluetooth, which I love, but that won't make the HIFI people happy.
