Hmm, depending on where you are. In countries like Indonesia, pretty much all the flagships (Xperia Z5, Galaxy S7) are available in dual SIM. Roughly all the Chinese phones, flagship or not, are dual SIM.

Europe here. I can get a dual sim Galaxy S7 only via grey market, and if I need to resort to warranty, I'm in for some deep ****.
If I want to get a Huawei, it's only marginally easier.
All of this, only because carriers do not want dual SIM phones in stores.
Apple could use its market power to destroy the embargo on dual SIM phones, then nobody would have any excuse.

Dual SIM is unheard of in the US, but it's almost the norm, and expected, in Asia, especially emerging markets. I can't wait for a dual-SIM iPhone if Apple keeps the broad LTE bands supports. Most dual SIM Android phones are region specific where the number of bands supported is usually limited to the region.

Just because you have dual SIM, doesn't mean you have to pay two phone bills. Besides, most people in emerging markets use prepaid plans, where they just top up the SIM as needed.

If you have two sim cards, they will obviously be from two separate accounts which therefore does equal two separate phone bills/prepaid amounts.

Would be great, but considering Apple's zestiness for making everything smaller & rumoured getting rid of the headphone jack, highly unlikely! They could try reconvincing the telcos to get rid of the SIM cards altogether, though. :)

Any secondary sources here? All the pictures seem to be from the same "leak".

Dual SIM is absolutely a flagship feature among Apple's competitors, Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG, and Microsoft all offer it on their top phones. Most Americans aren't even aware it exists, but I know many people who carry both Work and Personal phones who could benefit from Dual SIM. Last year I bought a Sony Dual SIM phone that worked pretty well, but unfortunately it got damaged irreparably and I'm back to two iphones.

Having separate work and personal numbers is probably the biggest reason to go Dual SIM in the US. Worldwide, it's useful for people who cross borders frequently and need plans on both sides, or for countries where coverage is spotty. For people using prepaid MVNOs, which frequently offer free in-network calls, it can be helpful to have multiple SIMs. It's also handy for buying a local SIM when travelling without removing your primary, but that's not the biggest sellling point.

It's not that much of a difference in the phone OS. They need separate settings for each SIM, and switch to pick which one is used for data. MS uses separate dialers and SMS apps per SIM, android has different send/call buttons within a single app. Managing contacts, and which SIM they use, is the biggest challenge. And if Apple really wanted to lead the industry, they'd find a way to simultaneously use data on both sims.

I'd prefer an Apple embedded SIM, that way it'd go a long way to making the phone waterproof. Having access to the SIM card tray doesn't help in this regard.

I highly, highly doubt this. Apple wants to do away with the SIM card altogether. If they were to do something this, it would have been on the iPhone SE, which is targeted toward a budget audience. More likely is an embedded Apple SIM like on the iPad Pro 9.7".

My bet is that there will be 0 SIM trays before there is 2. This stuff can all be done in software, why waste precious internal space.

I would much rather see THIS. SIM cards are frequently swapped as a troubleshooting method for connectivity problems, if we could eliminate that .. that would be really nice!

Rumors are all over the place this time a round!

I personally wouldn't care for this.... I don't want two phone bills. Thanks!

Perhaps not. However, you're most likely not trying to expand business in Asia. This would be very desirable in Asia. Eventually Apple will sell a phone that works with all carriers. Your choices will be storage, color, and display size. :apple:

I'd have thought this is more aligned to businesses where users can switch between business and personal.

I thought Apple were supposedly getting rid of SIM cards?

Slow, unreliable and insecure storage. No thanks.
Why do you need a super fast encrypted storage media to store videos on? The biggest benefit to a MicroSD card is you can load it up with media like movies or TV shows for those long trips without data.

mmm more than a few people look at this as too much of not suitable for 'American' market, which by now is not the biggest anymore (by far).

Like said before it would score very good indeed in India/China were dual-sim is the standard, largely due fragmented provider coverage with a multitude of providers.

India and China are the main focus point at the moment for Apple.

Anyway, i would welcome it very much. I'm not in the far-east but travel frequently and for work need two phones which is horrible, so i gave up my (jailbroke and fully customized) iPhone 6 for a Android (piece of ****) phone.

I would immediately switch back if dual-sim was supported on the iPhone 7.....

Um, why dual camera only on larger model? Absolutely zero market interest for dual camera on the "smaller" model?

This is a great idea. Anybody that has to carry around 2 phones, 1 for work, and 1 personal will completely appreciate this. My last company required me to use their phone. They were low tech, so I had forwarded all calls to my personal phone as well as iMessage forwarding. The company I am with now has been letting me expense my personal phone, but my boss has been warning me they may eventually send me a company phone. That second sim would be great!

No. Look at Android, and the confusion Marshmallow caused due to expandable storage. Besides, looking at their profits, I don't think Apple is stupid. Even Google stopped putting microSD slot on the Nexus since Galaxy Nexus.

Wrong.

They obviously are NOT including expandable storage because they actively practice planned obsolescence.

would be strange to have 2 sim introduced only now..
.. the future is a SW SIMs (as many SIMs as you need ? )
securized with the same SE as the ApplePay.

Yeah, it looked like we were going in the eSim only direction, but I guess pressure from the Chinese/Asian market may have something to do with this. It's not something that consumers in the US and Europe have been asking for, at least not 99 percent of them. Personally, I would be alright with a software-based sim solution, but in other parts of the world, old habits/tech can still prevail among the general population and given Android's dominance in those particular markets, any advantage/"way of catching up" Apple could give to the iPhone can't be overlooked.

I doubt this but would love it for int'l travel. I hate swapping in a foreign SIM because I either lose my US service or have to set up a forwarding through a Google Voice or Skype in/out in order to retain US # service.

I would pay Apple the price of their 128 GB phone if they shipped me a iPhone with a base 32 GB and a SD slot and any updates to iOS to make it work. This should take away their excuse of not doing it because it will cut on profits. (Edit: Well, if it was just me, then it wouldn't be profitable. Never mind).

Yeah, it definitely would be great for travel for some people. I have T-Mo and only travel overseas once a year (Europe usually) so I'm good with my current setup, but for others who travel more frequently and don't have T-Mo, definitely better. Less of a hassle.

Apparently in Asia carriers have a lot of "calls to our customers are free" plans, which is why everyone seems to have at least two phones.
