Here is a guy who wants another opening in their iPhone, where I'm hoping Apple can get to the point of removing even the Lightning port. If Apple does indeed include inductive charging on the 8, I'll be making a plug to insert into the Lightning jack so it doesn't fill with lint like every other iPhone I've had.
I suppose you have a point about that. I love my wired headphones and earbuds. But as much as I use the 3.5 mm on my Samsung and iPads, there are times when I'm out doing work in a dusty messy environment, with my IPhone 7 Plus on me, and thinking it wouldn't be so bad if Apple went all the way and managed to get rid of all these points of ingress for debris. For my S7 and IPhone SE I had great cases from Ringke that had plugs to cover all of the ports. I don't have anything like that for my 7 Plus.

That's like me modding my 2017 MacBook with a CD drive.
So you no longer care about listening to high fidelity music without dongles? You can buy a $750 pair of wireless headphones and it still sounds worse than a $50 pair of wired headphones because the bluetooth standard they're using simply doesn't have the bandwidth. (And if you connect it to a 3rd party device like your car, it's absolutely abysmal because it drops to the lowest possible speed.) . And that's the real point - if Apple had instead created a new wireless standard that could transmit high quality audio, then this would just be about the minor annoyances of buying new hardware and charging headphones, etc. But it's not. The ONLY way to get high quality music out of an iPhone7 is to carry around a bunch of annoying dongles. Wireless doesn't do it. Oh - but there's no need to make a phone portable... I love having huge dongles in my pockets.

Bottom line is Apple did this to sell headphones. It was not to help customers in any way. And posts like this just help their cause.

Says you. They're extremely convenient to me cuz I can't be bothered to keep yet another device always charged... and I do NOT respect garbage sound quality at 3 times the price.

Seems like you don't care much for SQ.

Sound quality is good enough for me, I can't pretend I have Mozart's ears. I walk, I exercise, I work, I play, I travel. Silly wires dangling under my chin and on my chest are not an my thing anymore. It takes 3 seconds for me to plug them in charge and I don't have to do it again for a week ( I mean that on its own must be such an inconvenient for some. Right? )

But hey ho, each to their own.

I think this is brilliant, and the fact one guy did this just makes me think Apple could have probably retained the headphone jack socket if they'd really wanted to, and with fewer compromises than this guy made to achieve it. I don't think it was about 'courage', I think it was about the agenda of furthering pressure on consumers to adopt wireless headphones/earphones, and about selling Airpods and Beats.

And I have no idea why some (emphasis: some) people who prefer wireless headphones feel the need to denigrate those who still prefer wired headphones.

Edit: I also want to say the video was really interesting and worth watching even if you don't care about the headphone jack particularly. It was nice seeing how enthusiastic he was, and the steps he took to get to the final working modification. In time I hope he recoups all his expenses from enough views.

I’ve been waiting for someone to do this since we first found out they didn’t use the space for a vital component, I’m glad someone had the courage to do it and I hope he starts modding other Apple Products.

And I'm far from having Beethoven's ears :), but after going with AirPods I'd never go back to a wired connection for casual listening.

They're also super for phone calls. Excellent sound quality in both directions and it's killer being hands-free with a mobile phone.

The headphone jack is needed for optimal sound quality. W1 chip does not bring it. I guess the same people who think wireless headphones are better, think that Beats sounds good too... Technology goes forward and new things replaces old ones like SCSI, 3.5" floppies etc. but wireless headphones are not replacement for wired even they serve the same purpose. Many musicians and other audiophiles need best possible audio quality for their work and iPhone as platform has been suitable for many people until removal of the jack. Sure, it's Apples business decision but lying about the reasons is not the right way to do it.

The point of the guy's video is not the use of wireless or wired, mostly that Apple lied that headphone jack wont fit inside the phone. People are just circle jerking and bashing the guy and enjoying their "I have to wait and buy earpods since that's what Apple wants me to do".

"I think Apple Airpods sounds amazing!" is personal opinion. The audio measurements have been average and they don't fit everyones ears. With headphone jack you can buy whatever you want for your purposes, quality and fit. Obviously also with other wireless buds too if their quality is enough.

https://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AppleEarPods.pdf even the earpods with same form factor aren't that good and they are wired.

The part he left out of the video. It wouldn't get as many clicks if people knew he had to take something out to get to this. I also wonder about how water proof the phone would be with this jack? and what other mods would need to be done.
He did mention that in the video actually. He also notes that it "appears to be just a piece of plastic" and shows it to the camera.

Whether it truly does anything- I don't know. But it did look like just a piece of plastic.

Great. Next he'll add an 8-track cartridge, a SCSI port and have it all run on steam. Forward into the future!

Not nonsense at all. I think removing all the ports that all the people use is nonsense.
The people complaining that this is a futile task this person has taken upon themselves, you've obviously never used the headphone jack on your iphone to record audio or purchased expensive third party devices that work with 35mm jack to expand the functionality of your phone only to be screwed by apple when the new models came out. You all need to shut your holes until you have something valid to say and hope that you never have a need for what Apple has already been taken from you.

Even though i have a 3.5mm jack on my iPhone SE i decided to get some Beats X last month to see what all this wireless headphone stuff is about.

1) They sound so much better than the ones i've been using for ages, the bass is great. Feels like i'm using my big Pioneer HiFi

2) The fact i no longer get wires in the way down to my pocket is amazing, i use to snag them lots.

3) I can pair them with my Mac Mini when at my desk without routing round the back for the headphone socket.

4) I won't ever actively buy wired headphones again!

"We don't want to ship air.... So what do we do with the extra space? We fill it with batteries"
- Phil Schiller, 2015, 12inch Macbook

Clearly the not the case here. Removed the jack and left the space.

A barometer needs space.

The only laughable part is some of you comparing actual obsolete technology to a headphone jack, which still serves a purpose and is used by millions. No, it's not an SCSI port nor a CD drive. So it's not going anywhere until wireless technology matches the practicality and sound quality of the 3.5mm, or a new universal solution directly replaces it (and lightning sure isn't one).

How does this improve it being waterproof or even resistant?

Also if you are looking for audio quality you wouldn't be playing MP3s off an iphone.
