The headphone jack is needed for optimal sound quality. W1 chip does not bring it. I guess the same people who think wireless headphones are better, think that Beats sounds good too... Technology goes forward and new things replaces old ones like SCSI, 3.5" floppies etc. but wireless headphones are not replacement for wired even they serve the same purpose. Many musicians and other audiophiles need best possible audio quality for their work and iPhone as platform has been suitable for many people until removal of the jack. Sure, it's Apples business decision but lying about the reasons is not the right way to do it.

The point of the guy's video is not the use of wireless or wired, mostly that Apple lied that headphone jack wont fit inside the phone. People are just circle jerking and bashing the guy and enjoying their "I have to wait and buy earpods since that's what Apple wants me to do".

"I think Apple Airpods sounds amazing!" is personal opinion. The audio measurements have been average and they don't fit everyones ears. With headphone jack you can buy whatever you want for your purposes, quality and fit. Obviously also with other wireless buds too if their quality is enough.

https://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AppleEarPods.pdf even the earpods with same form factor aren't that good and they are wired.

Apple left a little space in there because they have a barometer in there that now won't work right on that guy's iPhone. So congrats, you can put a jack in there if you're willing to break part of the phone.

I'd buy it. I use the headphone jack every day on my iPhone 6 and won't upgrade it until it eventually dies a death and I'm forced to replace it with something else.

To me, having an outdated pocket computer is worse than having to plug headphones into a different shaped port.

Of all the possible hardware modifications / additions you could do the iPhone, this has to be one of the silliest. looks like great integration and good hardware implementation none the less.
How is it silly? It's obvious that a huge number of people still want the headphone jack. This wasn't about upgrading an iPhone 7 to make it perform better, it was about bringing a basic feature back that was very useful to many.

He only proved that it's an inside space issue. Even if is possible to do on one phone mass producing is a different story. Well it's a non issue to begin with.

If some guy can do it, so can Apple with their resources. It's still not about if it can be done or not, Apple lied that its not possible when in real life their goal is to make money. Selling Airpods is good way to gain market share from dozens of vendors. It was purely business decision and marketed to consumers as revolution. Nothing new in marketing world. Apple has most fanatic customers and if they say "this is the best", fans say "how much?".

Then buy the dongle.

Just in time to have to start all over again with iPhone 7s/7s+ and iPhone 8. Great timing!
But he's an entertaining guy and his passion for experimentation and "what if?" is encouraging.

Sound quality is good enough for me, I can't pretend I have Mozart's ears. I walk, I exercise, I work, I play, I travel. Silly wires dangling under my chin and on my chest are not an my thing anymore. It takes 3 seconds for me to plug them in charge and I don't have to do it again for a week ( I mean that on its own must be such an inconvenient for some. Right? )

But hey ho, each to its own.

Your headphones DO NOT last a week per charge with frequent use. I rather just plug them in and go.

You do realize you're being pretty arrogant with your mentality that wired headphones have no place, right? Nobody cared for the existence of bluetooth on phones, but now all of a sudden a headphone jack is a big deal to you? What phone on the market took away bluetooth just to have a 3.5mm jack?

Which begs the question; why do you care if the headphone jack is there or not? You're not forced to use it.

Nice hack. But am I right in understanding one can't charge the 7 while using the 3.5mm headphones?

I have an iPhone 6s and I haven't used the headphone jack in years. I wouldn't miss it. I have Bluetooth, or AirPlay at home, in my car and with my headphones.

The barometer works fine, the plastic vent he removed is so the sensor still works when water sealed. Now he has a gaping hole, it's not necessary anymore.

Apple could do it if they wanted to not have a barometer. Otherwise they can't and neither can this guy. I know that you want some conspiracy to make more money, but this isn't one.

They had a list of features and an order of importance. They found a bigger taptic engine and a barometer to be more important than the headphone jack.

One important fact what people forget is that removing 3.5mm jack was not because lack of space. There are now smaller phones at market which has it. It was business decision.

- Selling own headphones which work only with own phone makes more money what used to hundreds different vendors
- Airpods are visual marketing aid like white cords were associated to ipod before every phone manufacturer started to sell them
- Apple uses their W1 chip. It has to since they are fighting against Qualcomm in several different cases and Qualcomm sells AptX licences. AAC improves the situation but its just codec at software level where as AptX is at bluetooth level.

I've had every iPhone, except the original. I currently have the 7plus and like it the best. I like that it is water resistant and have forced me to convert everything to Bluetooth. I think it is weird when I see people on the subway or working out with wires attached to their phones. Great move on Apple's part, IMHO to get rid of the jack.

And why do you think it was there? Think about it for a minute. One heavy rain and his barometer just broke.

But congrats on the headphone jack I guess.

I haven't even opened the ear pods that came with my 7. I haven't missed the headphone jack one bit.

You are implying that they had no option to change the form factor which is not the case.

Yes that's how I read it too. When somethings plugged into the headphone jack, the Lightning signal is routed there, and bypasses the Lightning jack, and if something is plugged into the Lightning jack, it may switch the signal back to the Lightning jack and away from the 3.5mm jack. So he hasn't really accomplished much except the need to avoid carrying around the dongle.

He should have squeezed the hardware from inside the Belkin adapter into the iPhone so he could charge and listen at the same time, if that's the case.
