Apple could do it if they wanted to not have a barometer. Otherwise they can't and neither can this guy. I know that you want some conspiracy to make more money, but this isn't one.

They had a list of features and an order of importance. They found a bigger taptic engine and a barometer to be more important than the headphone jack.

He removed a vent, not the sensor, you can put a vent else where in the phone or make a jack/vent combo and it would be fine. The taptic engine is still in his modded phone.

I rejoice to live in an age in which we are so wealthy people can use their disposable income for stuff this bizarre and extreme. What a lucky time to be alive, even if I cannot get the next apple phone because no touchID.

You do know how a barometer works, right? Also, wasn't saying he messes up the taptic engine. I was saying Apple didn't think the headphone jack was important enough to keep.

Not changing the form factor was about money, that I concede. But removing the headphone jack wasn't.

What math are you using? Apple brought new product to their lineup (wireless headphones) and at the same time removed the headphone jack. People were left with option to use random bluetooth headphones or get into "amazing" Airpods family. It has absolutely positive financial effect. Even if they wouldn't sell any Airpods, in theory they save few cents from each headphone jack not installed.

or buy a dongle.

Also apple acquired Beats long before the headphone jack was removed. So technically they sold wireless headphones before the decision as well.

Let's break down where the space went.

A) Larger taptic engine
B) That barometric vent

I suppose you're asking why we need a barometric vent. The answer is simple. If we want the phone to both be waterproof and have a working barometer, the vent was needed.

Sure, I have no details why larger taptic engine is used or what are the reasonings behind it but there are plenty of phones with barometric measurements with waterproofing along with other functions and their respective hardware needed. Its all about arrangements and the space it needs, right? What if I say that iPhone was 1-2mm longer would they all fit?

This is amazing. If only Apple could swallow their pride and bring back the headphone jack. (Or at least replace Lightning with USB-C so that we can have corded headphones that actually work on multiple devices with no adapters).

So you no longer care about listening to high fidelity music without dongles? You can buy a $750 pair of wireless headphones and it still sounds worse than a $50 pair of wired headphones because the bluetooth standard they're using simply doesn't have the bandwidth. (And if you connect it to a 3rd party device like your car, it's absolutely abysmal because it drops to the lowest possible speed.) . And that's the real point - if Apple had instead created a new wireless standard that could transmit high quality audio, then this would just be about the minor annoyances of buying new hardware and charging headphones, etc. But it's not. The ONLY way to get high quality music out of an iPhone7 is to carry around a bunch of annoying dongles. Wireless doesn't do it. Oh - but there's no need to make a phone portable... I love having huge dongles in my pockets.

Bottom line is Apple did this to sell headphones. It was not to help customers in any way. And posts like this just help their cause.
I fully agree with your points, but this is a fight you won't win. People choose perceived ease of use to sound quality.

I said perceived and not actual ease of use. Especially when you factor in the cost of BT headphones and the need to charge them.

Cassette tapes were much the same situation back in the 1970's. Worse sound than an 8-track, but you could record more music on a cassette tape. Of course you lost a lot of sound quality because you made the tape yourself and with a cheap tape deck, but the cassettes WERE smaller and more portable. So what if they all had a loud hiss in the background that even Dolby systems couldn't get rid of entirety. For most people music is something that plays in the background.

The people complaining that this is a futile task this person has taken upon themselves, you've obviously never used the headphone jack on your iphone to record audio or purchased expensive third party devices that work with 35mm jack to expand the functionality of your phone only to be screwed by apple when the new models came out. You all need to shut your holes until you have something valid to say and hope that you never have a need for what Apple has already been taken from you.
Lol.. WTF. Thats basically what I meant.

Not this nonsense still

This lack of ports stuff is a REAL issue for a LOT of us. If I didn't have such an investment in Apple software I'd be long gone. I think it's OK for some people to say, "oh - well I never needed that port, so I'm OK with it being gone", but it's NOT OK for people to tell others they DON'T need something.

I never saw a single person complaining about the iPhone6S "I love it, but wish there wasn't a headphone jack on it", nor did I ever hear people complaining about their Macbook Pro having ports.

If people just keep bashing others who complain when Apple makes their offerings worse, they're just contributing to a declining level of Apple products.

Right now, Apple is a monopoly like AT&T - I have just 2 options - (1) use an enormous pile of dongles or (2) walk away and leave. Thanks goodness Samsung has more sense than that.

I think adding 4 ports that can do everything and expanding the usability of my MacBook is infinitely better.

He's not, you know.
Only those 4 ports are directly compatible with hardly anything right now. And its been almost a year since they were launched and the situation has not changed a bit. You need an adapter to plug anything into those 4 ports. If you are okay with dongles sticking out of your laptop for basic compatibility, then good for you.

What a pointless waste of time.

Not really a kind comment. Why do people climb mountains? He had a desire to complete a project and through his perserverance and knowledge he did it. Has the poster ever done anything significant?

An
Here is a guy who wants another opening in their iPhone, where I'm hoping Apple can get to the point of removing even the Lightning port. If Apple does indeed include inductive charging on the 8, I'll be making a plug to insert into the Lightning jack so it doesn't fill with lint like every other iPhone I've had.
And in a years time he’ll be modding AirPods completely oblivious to the irony. Props to him for his brilliance, but wires are dead.

So you don't know that USB-C is not good standard since the same connector does not work with all manufacturers across the board. If it would work as intended, then you could charge your macbook with any USB-C charger but that is not the reality. Maybe in the future they will fix the standard but even then we don't know how Apple will reflect the changes.
