Assuming I still end up getting one (wary of this AT&T credit thing), I'm kind of surprised that black so dominates the color choices. I was glad when white was offered because it kept every phone from looking the same. I think I started my change with a white iPhone 4 and have gotten white/silver each time I upgraded. I got a black iPad one year when they only had it in the storage I wanted at launch and honestly never liked that color.

The storage options are kind of surprising. People complained about the 16GB base model for years. Now it's a 32GB model and MORE PEOPLE CHOSE THE MOST EXPENSIVE OPTION. I know this is just pre-orders, but those are the people whom you figure would pop by here to complain the most. I haven't been dumb enough to get the lowest storage option since I made that mistake with a 4S. "Oh, I'll save $100." Oh, I'll run out of space all the damn time. As I tell anybody who buys these things: In this case, it's not that you need 128GB of storage. It's that you'll probably need 33GB at some point. I don't think I've filled up my iPhone 6 64GB through normal use, but I've easily done it on my iPad Air 32GB. You find some neat games and want to keep a bunch of comic books and magazines on the device and boom, you want more storage!

The iPhones are so popular, that people buy... 101% of available colors :D

They removed the headphone jack to make room for an extra 1 percent of colors!

Apple has the top two highest selling phone models and somewhere between 90-95% of the total profit in the industry. You think that your "just make it thicker, heavier and hide the camera bump" idea will get them the other 5%?
[...]
you're making the emotional argument "people are sheep and Apple are wolves".
Lol, if for a second anyone thinks I am taking it to heart they might be red in the face. Apple designs for profit, period. If you think those videos are speaking to you, then you have been sucked into the marketing ploy.

Apple make trade-off, yes, yes they do for maximum profit. Don't forget that, at the end of the day Apple is not a charity. If you are telling me that while other companies can put together a similar if not better package and Apple has to limit these features for future releases due to engineering then you are fooling yourself. Apple seems to be doing a great job at it as it works on many. And no I do not think Apple can include the kitchen sink in the next iPhone (unless they try) :p;):)

Apples marketing plan is simple, feed you a story of what they think you need and what fits into they maximum profit business plan and hopefully you buy it and praise Apple for showing you the way. Tell you what others are doing is rubbish, then years later introduce the same thing with a fancy marketing name a story to make it personal so you buy into it and the end state is the maximum profit business plan. Rinse and Repeat. Not hard to see past this, lol :D

Are you falling back to the paternalistic socialist response? "From Apple according to their ability to each according to their needs"? Apple's customers are merely a lumpenproletariat being duped by the finance aristocracy?

As I pointed out pretty clearly, Apple doesn't only design to make a profit, they've cleaned up. When the iPhone business is no longer sufficiently profitable, Apple will walk away. We're in agreement on that.

Where we seem to differ is that you seem to see profitability as a moral failing. There are places where excessive profit taking may be immoral-- healthcare and prisons come to mind. This, on the other hand, is a highly competitive market for superior goods-- this is precisely where profit means something. Profit indicates what the market values Apple's contribution at.

Millions of people are buying iPhones and are happy with them and rather than think "huh, those people must have a different set of priorities than I do", you think there's one right answer for everyone, all these people got it wrong, and that it's a mass delusion brought about by a commercial?

It's marketing, not hypnosis...

I do think why people choose 128 over 256, its the price first and 128 is enough mostly. If there was only two options, they would have gone with 256gb

Sounds good as long as it doesn't cost double the price. I was kind of shocked ith the price of ceramic watch. Was expecting it to be similar to SS one.

It's a fairly new process I imagine, with low yields. I wonder whether this is a precursor to them using this in the iPhone next year, to develop the process to a point where it can be more reliable and bring down the cost.

Yup. Second option has been the most popular the last three years. I think 64gb is more than enough for most people. I think 32gb was enough between 2010-2015, but not in in this 4K recording era. 128gb should be more than enough during the rest of the decade though.

Color

Jet black is the Jony-come-lately color option. Also doesn't come in 32gb which helps favor the matte black and this is where its limited supply skews the numbers for having the manufacturing process be so late with 128gb as the minimum. In a way, being only the 2nd most popular is a good thing for resellers. It's the rarer black option. The option hard to find during the next few months but so in demand. Jet is the more elusive one.

For me, if I got both matte and jet. Keep matte. Sell jet. But I could see myself not caring if jet got flaws. I know the worrisome of "scratches" but since jet is so dark and the truer black, I don't think most people would care looking for scratches under lighting. The scratches seem no worse than the iPhone 3G/3Gs era which were made of weaker plastic. Eventually, majority of people will stop caring.

I remember I didn't give a damn anymore using cases for the 3G when I had it. I enjoyed the comfort more than the looks. The 2G looked better but was actually more slippery since it wasn't curved. The 3G was battered up to begin with. The OCD symptoms comes early during the honeymoon phase but fades away after some real world abuse. Then scratches simply become battle scars and badges of honor for durability with most people.

Storage Capacity

Second highest storage have been the highest the last few years as people are wising up to skip the base model. Take note people getting it now are like the heatseekers. A little more hardcore. Eventually by Christmas and we see great deals, the 32gb will start becoming popular for the regular masses.

This is actually the most overlooked aspect of the 7 series but offers hidden value. Ditched the 16gb and 64gb, and offering double storage for same price. 128gb is alot already for many. Top Androids have 64gb at best although they do have a microSD slot. Heck, the Note7 cost $850 for a 64gb internally and you still need to spend more for the microSD card. A 256gb iPhone 7 and 128gb 7 Plus are the same prices.

Screen Size

Finally the Plus models is winning! Third time's the charm. Proves iOS are adjusting to its larger size during the last couple of years. Not as closed minded as you think! Those perks like extra RAM, dual cameras, sharper display, and better battery life have also helped.

I know "5.5 is not for everyone. Still surfboard size to some. Many will stick to "4 or "4.7. No one size fits all. But hey, BIG PHONES need love too. The 7 Plus finally wins the popularity contest for the heatseekers when less peope was sure about it just two years ago.

Again, these are from preorders for people a little more hardcore than the masses. The 32gb and smaller 7 might become the more popular options later because of price. The preorder buyers are a little more wise. They want features and not being duped by the base models.

The jet black will close the gap a little on the matte black when Apple makes enough units available for its high demand. It will never top matte black though since it lacks a 32gb option. But the best for resale being the rarer black and where demand far exceeds supplies right now. Elusive.

I'm gonna go from an iPhone 4S to iPhone 8S. Worth the wait, this is no real update, just a new paint job, what ever.

Next years most popular model will be the Apple iPhone "Edition" to celebrate its 10 years Anniversary

I'm going from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black. Even if the 7 and the 7 Plus were the exact same in every way other than size I would have still gotten the plus. After 2 years with the 4.7 inch screen I'm ready for something bigger!
Be warned, there's no going back to the 4.7" screen, once you're used to that 5.5"er.....

I went to a store today to try it out and I saw posters on every corner, but not a single store had it. They didn't even have the phone to try, let alone buy. Yeah ...

So making the iPhone thinner at the cost of battery life is beneficial, how? Having the camera stick out like a soar thumb is beneficial, how? Customers have been saying for years that the iPhone is thin enough and the battery life could be extended by have it thicker and have the camera flush with the rear. Think Apple cares? It can be done.

It can be done. But only a minority of users would benefit from a larger battery, while all users would be stuck with a heavier and larger phone in their pocket.
While I wouldn't mind Apple making a large battery version, I think the battery case is great. And since most users use a case anyway, if you have battery issues you should buy the Apple battery case. While the majority of us can get by fine with the current battery and a lightweight case. And with the seven having even more battery life, the percentage of users who will be more than satisfied will increase.

I don't think pre-order break downs are at all indicative of the breakdown of sales during the life of the product. The 32gb will sell the most to the customers who just buy a phone during the course of the year. And the pre-order crowd only makes up about 5% of the phones sales during the first year.

The RAM doesn't make that much difference except for the camera. Historically the smaller model has outsold the larger one, and this year we finally get OIS in the smaller model.

Seriously? "The RAM doesn't make that much difference"?

Regardless, they have two cameras and more RAM. And it appears to be outselling the smaller model.
Do you have any suggestion as to why they are outselling the smaller model, any other differences.

My point was" We're not just comparing similar phones with different screens, the cameras makes it a different option. Some people might not even want/need the bigger screen but are choosing it for the camera.

My LG65" 2016 4K Curved OLED literally puts my 4K projector to shame with true blacks. If you cannot tell the difference between 750p, 1080p, and 4K well that's a good thing for your wallet at a minimum .

Serious question: What media do you watch at native 4K? How much of your viewing is done with upscaled HD? I'm asking because the the 4K panels from LG that I've seen had unimpressive interpolated images and the amount of native 4k content is tiny.

Yes, the RAM doesn't make much difference for non-camera-related tasks. It is there primarily to handle the extra image processing. I'm sure eventually Apple will increase the RAM in general iOS devices, but 4GB is the logical new threshold rather than 3GB (12.9" iPad Pro being a case in point). IOS is much more aggressive than Android at RAM management.

Slice Intelligence has shared new data that suggests the iPhone 7 Plus has outsold the iPhone 7 in the United States, marking the first time Plus-sized iPhones have proven more popular than 4.7-inch models, based on e-receipt data from nearly 32,000 customers who belong to the research firm's panel.

The data shows that, in the first 48 hours of availability, 55 percent of customers ordered the iPhone 7 Plus, compared to 41 percent for the iPhone 6s Plus and 35 percent for the iPhone 6 Plus. The 5.5-inch model is a more attractive option this year given it has dual cameras, while the 4.7-inch model retains a single-lens camera.

55.9 percent of customers who pre-ordered an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus had previously purchased at least one iPhone between 2014 and now, according to Slice Intelligence. 34 percent of customers had not purchased any smartphone since 2014, while the remaining shoppers switched from Samsung, LG, and Motorola.

Meanwhile, given the lack of Space Gray this year, Black has emerged as the new most popular iPhone color, accounting for 46 percent of pre-orders. Jet Black is also a popular choice, selected by 23 percent of customers, although limited supply of Jet Black models has pushed shipments of Jet Black models to November, likely leading many customers to choose Black, Gold, Rose Gold, or Silver instead.

Rose Gold models, first introduced on the iPhone 6s, represented 15 percent of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus pre-orders, while Gold and Silver models trailed behind with 9 percent and 8 percent of orders respectively.

iPhone-7-storage-split.jpg

For the past three iPhone launches, over 60 percent of pre-orders over the first two days were on the middle storage option, according to Slice Intelligence. iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus continue that trend, with 128GB proving most popular at 67 percent, followed by 32GB at 14 percent and the all-new 256GB tier at 19 percent.

Slice Intelligence tracks e-receipts from 4.2 million online shoppers in the U.S., allegedly the largest panel of its kind, that sign up for the company's value-added services such as Slice and Unroll.me. Slice, for example, is a free app for tracking packages, receipts, price drops, product recall alerts, and more.

Slice Intelligence has charts with more detailed information on its website.

who cares which is most popular, I want that lock screen or wallpaper in that article :)

anyone know where to get it from

Honest question: who cares about 750p?

On a relatively small screen? I certainly don't. And I'm a photographer who edits on my phone. Makes no difference.

I think the very few who care are those into having "my phone has better specs than your phone" bragging rights while sitting around the school cafeteria lunch table admiring and coveting each others' phone specs.

Anybody else? I suspect most won't give two trucks...

Rest assured those people always wanted black. Nobody asked for space grey. Personally I just didn't want a phone with white bezels. I'm glad we have real black options once again.

/stating the obvious.

Wow really? You mean someone would knowingly order a 750p phone in 2016?!? The iPhone 7 is a disgrace. The Plus is the only option this year.

I ordered a 750p phone in 2016 because screw you.

Exactly. It's a 4.7" screen not a 65" HDTV. Do people really need a 4K screen on their phones?

Anyone who is using a VR Headset with the iPhone knows this is important. It's like looking at a screen door. You eventually get used to it but it would really be nice to see a smooth line free image.
With the recent release of the Cardboard Camera app this annoyance will resurface.

What's the percentage of users that will do VR on the small-ish iPhone 7?

Would you exchange a slightly better VR image quality with lesser UI speed and battery life, things that 100% of users enjoy every single day? That's madness to me.
