I hate to be "that guy" but Steve Jobs would've never released a phone with software that was "incomplete"

He also wouldn't let almost 2 years slide between Mackbook Air and Macbook Pro updates.

How about releasing an iPhone where one version wasn't ready yet and took months to finish( white iPhone 4)? Or promise 3 Ghz in a year?

Why do people always say they're not "essential upgrades"? Do they think everyone upgrades yearly?

This is a fantastic upgrade for anyone NOT on a 6S.

It is downgrade for me. The removal of headphone jack and lack ability to listening music while charging is big downgrade for me.

I'm curious does every Android OEM phone get judged on whether it's an "essential upgrade"? Did reviewers ask this question of the Galaxy S7 and Note 7? Or is it only iPhones where this question matters?

Jump on some android forums and find out.

the first iphone had no MMS. Jobs said we should all use e-mail. One example of many mistakes and back tracking he had to do in order for the iphone to be a success. Lots of people forget how unfinished and unpopular that first iphone was. the 3G was trully the beginning.

Yep, like the first iPhone had to use a nonsense adapter with 3rd party headphones...oh, wait a minute.

They can't carry their systems everywhere they go.

There are alternate portable media players that offer superior sound to the iPhone.
Obviously they are not carrying full on systems everywhere , but your claim that true audiophiles are using lightning headphones is untrue.

Exactly. I'll go with the SE and wait for the 7S model, preferably the same SE size or similar.

Yeah, just bought the SE after the price drop. At this point, I hope Apple uses this frame for a while going forward. It's a good size, looks good and has a 3.5mm jack.

Nothing surprising just like when it was announced. The rumors were swirling back in spring. By June and July, we already saw mockups that looked exactly how we see them today. We had months and months of speculation to already formulate a valid opinion and prediction. And most of it now is hardly eye opening. Reviewers are just regurgitating what some of us felt months ago...

Buy matte black iPhone 7 if you don't want scratches and fingerprints as much. The last aluminum iPhone until 2020. I personally don't care because I think the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack would tick me off during trips and we all know their new wireless headphones is another cash grab. That South Korean atomic bomb Note7 ftw! The Note catered for Samsung's neighbors up north. Kim Jong-Un said thanks!

The idea of the iPhone 8 does intrigue even though I don't like glass. Apple started the glass rear trend. By returning to it, they could make the best-looking glass phone ever made. Cutting the top and bottom large bezels intrigues me. So much wasted space on iPhone since 2007. Correcting it for its 10th anniversary is something I look forward to. And who knows? Maybe they bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack? *facepalm* from 7 users... ;)

When discussing whether they recommend upgrading the phone why do reviewers always compare it to the most recent iteration when most people are looking to upgrade two (or more) generations back? The 7 is a huge upgrade from the 6 or 5s. And in my opinion it's still a substantial upgrade from the 6s.
I also don't agree with your comment!

There are different buyers in this market.

I would say a big chunk of day 1 to month 1 buyers upgrade each and every year (the fan boys, early adopters etc)

Others buy when their 2 year contracts end.. and those contracts expire each and every single day of the year! Some people may have the misconception that everyones contract expires on Friday 16th September lol!

The others have their eye on a new phone.. they may be postponing this purchase, but inevitably purchase one...

Iphone 7 and 7+ is going to appeal to ALLL of the ABOVE!

The man wasn't perfect, and didn't always put out perfect things. But man I miss his vision.

I agree. I really loved his consumer view of things. It doesn't matter what is inside. If it runs badly, that's all the user experiences. They don't know why it runs poorly. They don't know what to do to fix it. They just know it runs poorly. If you cough up loads of money for a poor experience, you're bound to feel a little bitten.

For instance if he was looking at the Mac line today, I'd like to think he'd have Fusion as standard in every single model. It's just the little things like that which make a really big difference overall; I don't think Apple's state is as doom-and-gloom as some posters here maintain, or is in such a desperate need of an overhaul.

But again, it's all conjecture. Who knows what Apple would be like today. :)

And things didn't always go right. Remember when they tried to release software updates and phone activations on the same day and everything went down for like 2 days (I think it was the 3G). Or MobileMe and how awful it worked: http://www.pcworld.com/article/149481/MobileMe.html

The man wasn't perfect, and didn't always put out perfect things. But man I miss his vision.
All that happened on the same day, it was chaos.

Steve Jobs is dead - accept it. He's never coming back. .

What we don't accept are mediocre upgrades. People want innovation. We want to be blown away. It just feels like apple are drifting along. There's no one steering the ship.

The iPad shipped with iOS 3 ! When 4 was out for months already before the iPad announcement.

the glossy black one is awful TBH it's super tacky and it's made for people who use covers ..awful covers!
Drop your phone once and it doesn't boot back up and you have to pay $$
AND you'll be a case user as well!
Some of the cases have a kickstand thats really cool for viewing video or emails!

Not if you're a heavy user. I have the SE, it's great but the battery life sucks. If you want battery the plus is where it's at.
Heavy usage is a highly variable term. If you're talking on 3G, sure the Plus will give hours more, but Internet use and Video are on par with a device that has twice the battery and 65% more weight.

So enjoy your phablet, I enjoy my phone. No need to dump on people who are delighted with a phone that's half the cost and delivers what I need. That's 2-3 days on 1 charge with moderate use, not 4 hrs as you claim.

why does the plus need the extra ram because of two cameras? Nothing I heard in the keynote suggested it uses them both at the same time - you switch between them so you're still only using one at a time. The fancy blur effect (which I'm pretty sure you can already do with apps?) said it switches to the telephoto lens to take the shot so likewise that shouldn't need any extra.

It is downgrade for me. The removal of headphone jack and lack ability to listening music while charging is big downgrade for me.

I thought your reason for not upgrading is that, for some distorted reason, you think it uses the same battery as the Samsung exploding phones?

I'm on a 6 - but have no desire whatsoever to upgrade to a 7.
Me too which I'm quite pleased about. It looks great yes but it's not enough and I like the fact I'm into my third year with the same phone - it felt wrong and very wasteful to give up perfectly good iPhones before but I'll wait the 7 out

you have a 6S do you really need a new phone every year at this point anyway?
Coming from a 6 it is a big big upgrade...

Agreed, I'm upgrading from a 6 and it is shaping up to be a very worthwhile upgrade.

Battery life. Speed. Camera. All very meaningful improvements.

Yes, Apple is just a big ship drifting along....with a massive net raking in $billions every quarter.

Of course we all want to be blown away, but that just won't happen every time. Apple will dazzle us when they are ready and not before. And if like many of us here you read the tech blogs, you won't ever be surprised by much in the future either.
