Not sure if I totally agree. The base price of the newest iPad used to be $499, but is now $599. This is because they just dropped the 16GB entry-level option which came with the lower price tag, forcing buyers to the 32GB option for the price they would have paid anyways.

what are you on about? $599 on the ipad air 2 got you 64gb not 32gb. they charged $100 more because they added a new word to the title: "pro"

So, they drop the 16GB $649 phone for the 7, that means the base model will start at $749 for the 32GB. I can't see apple just giving away $100 on the 32GB phone. So, if they add in the 256, that will be $949 for the 7 and 1049 for the 7+. I hope I am wrong, but this has been Apples pattern for years and if I have learned anything over the years, Apple is a creature of HABIT and PATTERNS

You're right, its been a while since I bought an iPad. The last time I did, 32GB was the mid-range for storage. The point I was trying to make it that hopefully Apple won't do the same thing to the iPhone as they did with the iPad. They should add in 32GB to the base model for the current base price. Not make it 32GB with $100 tacked on (like what they did with the iPad).

I really hope they don't do that since you can buy a 64GB iPhone 6s right now for $749.

They should sell the 32GB phone for $649 if the rumors are true, but who knows.

its about time. Its really sad that they sold a 8gb iphone 5C up until not that long ago. My wife has one and it is an abomination. With the OS being so large and facebook hogging tons of space there isn't much left for anything else

The fact that storage capacity on mobile devices is still important and is still being upgraded indicates that people don't trust cloud storage, or simply don't use it. 5 years ago it was supposed to be the future for everyone and no one would maintain local storage of any content -- in order that our technology masters could have more precise control of us.

Pretty cool, if they keep the same/close pricing as for the current 16GB range. 32GB will be fine for my use, as I currently have 45GB free on the 64GB phone.

16 GB is important to Apple. It allows them to capitalise on consumers who desire an iPhone device but either do not care about anything it does (i.e. it's a status symbol or fashion accessory), or are willing to take a huge hit on functionality in return for minimal discount. Those people do exist.

Personally, as a father with a busy lifestyle and constantly emailing, my iPhone is my primary computing device, the nexus of my digital life - I will always go for the maximum storage capacity available. I'm looking forward to a 256GB handset next year.

"Yay", now everyone can rejoice about the model they weren't going to buy anyway.
That doesn't make sense to me unless I'm missing something.

When I buy an iPhone, i need to buy the middle one to avoid the 16gb base storage model. If they up the base storage to 32 or 64gb, i get a cheaper phone and don't need to buy the middle one. (unless they up the base model price which i can't see that happening because the iPhone is crazy money now)

Part of that is speed and access. Since download/streaming speeds can vary greatly... and sometimes access is unavailable, why would someone want to (for example) keep some videos they shot ONLY in the cloud? When it comes to consuming content - my phone has pretty much 100% uptime. Also - as OS and apps become larger, even the "base" storage needs to increase. It's not hard on any platform to eat into 16gb.

Facebook iOS app is a data/storage space monster indeed. A good solution is trashing the app, while keeping the Messenger. You can then put a link to Facebook's site right on your phone screen and use it in Safari instead. Facebook now allows to use a login code, instead of having to retype our email/password all the time.

they won't add $100 to the standard iphone 7 model, but if they're really making an iphone "7 pro" expect that to be $100 more at least

I love the inclusion of the remarks about iCloud. As if that really matters in this discussion. People want storage on their phones. YES - they like to backup and have things stored externally. But you still need significant space on your actual device these days - especially if you take photos and videos.

Right, iCloud-type solutions would be more palatable in a world without data toll masters pinching data... where unlimited* drops the asterisk. Else, pinched on-board storage for the "convenience" of using iCloud just lines the pockets of the likes of AT&T, Verizon, etc. Tiers as they are can be burned by downloading just 1 movie from the cloud. The cloud evangelists that aren't the "Apple is always right in all things" crew must be guys who enjoy their "lighter" and "thinner" wallets too.

Where "the cloud" can make sense for those who prefer to keep more of their hard-earned money is secure, off-site backups, loaded up when the tollmasters are not monitoring each byte so closely. After that, the cost of "convenience" slides ever-higher... and is theoretically unlimited (when factoring in those tolls). Dropbox-type solutions for sharing files and collaborating also seem superior to traditional options (but more so via a wired- not (pinched) wireless- connection).

Now, where are those guys who have so passionately rationalized 16GB for years and years because of the cloud by spinning the latter as "the future." Apparently if this rumor is true even their God is moving on from such pinched, on-board storage. Welcome to "the future."
