There is a redesign ppl. It's right in the article, OLED, glass, edge to edge etc. I would love to have the upgraded aluminum phone be an option along with whatever new phone Jony is cooking up in his lab. If the rumors play out to be true, IMO I am not excited about wireless charging and the glass back already gives me anxiety over possibly breaking it.

I have a hard time believing this. We're talking the 10th anniversary of the phone - and they will continue with the same design since 2014? I even have a hard time believing red will be a color option. Apple has been lacking a lot lately but I just can't see them being THIS stupid.

It's 10 months away...maybe 6 until we get a real sense of what it will look like though leaked images. I'm not buying these early rumors.

How is this such a shocker? The (4, 4s), (5, and 5s) had a similar design -- the (6, 6s) and (7, Xx) may also follow along. Unless Apple forecasts a HUGE demand jump next year for iPhone (which I bet they don't) -- why would they spend R&D dollars and time redesigning the iPhone?

I'm not saying they will surely follow suit... maybe they *will* make it a big deal being a major anniversary... but I would not be so shocked if they didn't and this rumor were true...

A red one between all those other choices? That looks weird. Do they have lost all their taste? I start to believe that Apple is joking about us customers like the whole emoji thing on the Mac which gets too much focus.

This is not an Apple photo, it's a photo created alongside this rumor.

At this point, my prediction is that Jony Ive will announce he's leaving the company in the next 2-3 years to retire or work on something else (his title has been changed numerous times and he's mentioned a couple of times about feeling like he's getting to the end of his time at Apple). Then within the same year, or a year later, Tim Cook will step down. At that point Apple will either fail horribly and be burning money until they're none existent again, or somebody competent will step in to save them.

The execs at Apple are brainwashed with their own marketing BS. They really believe that crap coming out of their mouths now. Such ignorance.

I'd love a red iPhone but only if it came with a black front, which is unlikely.
You could always get one of these wraps / skins for the current phone.

what?

What do you mean 3 years of the same design? I mean, yea, so? Let me go back a little bit for you, not quite to the beginning but back a ways.

iPhone 4 - squared off edges, glass front/back
iPhone 4s - same as 4, better internals

iPhone 5 - squared off edges like the 4. Minor design change
iPhone 5s - same as 5, better internals

iPhone 6 - rounded edges, all aluminum body
iPhone 6s - same as 6, better internals

iPhone 7 - rounded edges like the 6. Minor design change
.....

Are you seeing the pattern? The iPhone 4, 4s, 5, and 5s were all similar designs. Likewise, one could fully expect the iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and whatever's next to follow suit.

To be distraught about no "major update after THREE years" means you haven't been paying attention.

The iPhone 5 was vaguely similar but still a overall redesign of the iPhone. The 4S-->5 was a way bigger redesign than the 6S-->7 was.

It's what they've done with their phones thus far.

iPhone -> 3GS: Same basic design
iPhone 4 -> 5s: Same basic design
iPhone 6 -> 7: Same basic design

So, realistically, no one should have expected a truly new design until iPhone 8. But, TBH, the current design is not terrible at all; so not sure if legitimately disappointed or just trolling.

THANK YOU!

Sheesh... are people really that dense? My kid is 5. Last year, they were taught how to identify patterns and she's good at it. Apparently better than 80% of the posters here whining about the possibility of not getting a whole new design for the 2017 iPhone iteration...

Ming-chi-chow has said that next years iPhone will introduce a 3rd model, it may sit alongside the 4.7" and the 5.5" I can see Apple introducing the 8 with a redesign, especially now that we have the 7 that kept the same design, even tho it is a great device, so proves that design is not everything.

I think it's quite likely that Apple is planning a more dramatic redesign than indicated here, but an iPhone just like the 7 that adds in a headphone jack would seem like a significant upgrade to me. Just sayin'.

Completely wrong!

iPhone- original design (aluminum back)
iPhone 3G/3GS- new design (plastic/curved back)
iPhone 4/4s- new design (glass flat back)
iPhone 5/5s - new design (larger phone)
iPhone 6/6s/7/7s - same damn phone for FOUR years! (If rumor turns out to be true).
Exactly, thank you for this. People saying that the 4/4s are the same design as the 5/5s need to have their eyes checked.
Having the same phone design for 4 years in this generation where technology is moving so fast will be like having a 1990s car in 2017, it's ridiculous.

The overall sentiment holds true though. The iPhone 4 and 4s were a "new" design at the time. The 5 and 5s were an evolution of that design.

The 6 and 6s were a new design (adding "plus" models too). The 7 is an evolution of that design and it would not be out of the realm of possibility to assume whatever is next (the 7s?) will be the same.... it seems to be a cycle that Apple is comfortable with and can keep up with.

Indeed. They are still going with the idea of taking the time to do something perfect.. The bad thing is though, lately it has taken them ages to do new releases, much longer than before - this will bite them in the arse, if its true.

Btw, Didn't we have an article about Apple testing 10 different designs/models? Maybe this is just one of them, if everything else fails?

I grouped them by design for you-- adding spaces between the generations that have the same design language so that you can see the pattern. you may have to squint, but it's there!

Too many Macrumors readers assume they're the vast majority of Apple customers, and this just isn't so. I would expect this rumor holds some water, the average Apple customer cares little about LED vs OLED vs LCD, they don't care about frameless/bezel-less displays until Apple shows them it exists... then sure.

New colors... that basic aspect appeals to them.

I worked in the retail stores for 6 years, everyone on this forum is a minority in their wishes and expectations of Apple.

You are correct!

Can't recall the number of times I've overheard a customer ask apple retail staff "I want an ipad, which one is best for me"

or people walking in recently and shelling out big bucks for the year old 6s, simply because there was no stock of the 7"

This is in fact 80% if not more of Apples customers. The hardcore ones are gonna buy whatever apple release each year. 7s, 8, x, whatever..

Well, I bought my 6s last year, next year would give me justification for considering an upgrade. Its just that, if its not giving me anything radically new or must have, I don't see the point of spending the money. My 6s does the same thing I would do with a 7: browse Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, use WhatsApp, check email, take pictures, browse the web. Right now, I am feeling like I will just use my 6s until Apple no longer supports it with newer iOS upgrades.

How is the 7 an "evolution" of the 6 design if they didn't change anything. The change from the iPhone 4 design to the iPhone 5 design was completely different metals used, replacement of the glass back and completely different screen ratio and size. The change between the iPhone 6 to the 7 was.... a removed headphone jack (hurray?)

There's already plenty of facts that show Apple isn't keeping up with new tech and designs.

Guys, nothing in this rumor suggests a completely new phone (8 or X or whatever) isn't also coming in 2017... In fact this all corroborates previous rumors that the new iPhone will launch alongside updated older models, and this time the updates to the older models will be a bit more significant if they do indeed contain a new processor (unlike the 5C or the storage bump in the 6S). Based on the collective resources available there is no reason to believe that we aren't getting a brand new design in 2017 (though I suspect it could see launch delays due to all the new tech and stuff, hence maybe the 7S for those who don't want to wait).

tl;dr - this is encouraging news and actually supports the previous rumors of a completely new phone in 2017
