Actually the issue is Apple's arrogance, narcissistic attitude and extreme greed. They've brought this on themselves.

As a long time Apple customer I've witnessed a huge shift in consumer attitude. We use to enjoy acknowledging Apple's success. But in recent years the customer ends up getting the short end of the stick. If not for Apple's expertise at sucking every last dollar from us, they wouldn't be so powerful and dominate.

In the real world Apple is getting back what they put out.

Ha, ha, ha...
Good one.

But how realistic is it for people to leave the same thing on their display for long periods of time? I can only think of display phones that don't have a looping demo video as being the only example.

The entire "clock/battery/carrier" bar is persistent. The unlock screen/menu is persistent. Countless UI widgets in software are persistent (think about the spanner/hamburger button.) It's taken several years to get my old Samsung TN screen that I'm still using to a state where I'm considering replacing it because the top inch of the screen keeps having persistence problems due to... UI widgets.

That's the thing about OLED though, it takes weeks for burn-in to appear, and it can't be wiped out by simply changing the pixel configuration (eg a solid black/white screen.) Burn-in is pretty much identical to how CRT's burn in, it's burned into the screen itself.

Read the forewords of the Display Mate's review: it is not a hand picked sample.

"And for those of you thinking of Emailing that we got hand-picked units, the iPhones were purchased retail from Verizon Wireless."

The display of my iPhone 7 is noticeably better than the display of my 6S: brighter with stunning colors.

The display for some folks is not brighter, forget the 25% brighter as I understand that part of it.

With my iPhone 6s I could keep that at 50% brightness, the iPhone 7 I would have to increase the brightness a good deal and all that is going to do is eat away at battery life.

And how does one explain some folks are resetting their iPhone 7 and the brightness mimics their 6s and for others it did nothing.

Unless you're a photographer who cares a lot about color and accuracy when editing photographs. If you're not very fussy, then it probably doesn't matter as much.

I prefer to get the content how it was created and intended to be viewed, and not distorted by display properties.

They likely disabled the automatic brightness setting, it has already been discussed here.

What happens when a phone is reset? Hardware doesn't magically fix itself, but settings do get reverted to the defaults. The defaults include using automatic brightness.

You obviously did not read the article, it is stated very plainly there:

"On the iPhone 7 the Maximum Screen Brightness can go much higher when Automatic Brightness is turned on, so that users can't permanently park the Manual Brightness slider to very high values, which would run down the battery quickly. High Screen Brightness is only needed for High Ambient Light, so turning Automatic Brightness On will provide better high ambient light screen visibility and also longer battery running time."

I don't know... I came from a 6 to a 7 and it feels like a massive upgrade to me. It's all relative I guess. Sure, it's the same physical form factor if that's what you're talking about. But the screen, speed/RAM, cameras/OIS, stereo speakers, battery life, and haptics are all huge improvements, not to mention the better looking design and water resistance.

+1

My iPhone 7 screams compared to my 6+.

I love the screen too. Beautiful color rendition to my eyes but maybe because I am an amateur photographer.

A worthy upgrade so far...

At arm's lenght, it doesn't matter if it has 1440p or 1080p, everything above 280-300 dpi looks the same.

Nope.

As a former Galaxy S6 owner, I can tell you the level of clarity, vividness, contrast and overall image quality is much better on the Samsung compared to my Apple iPhone 6S. It's not even close.

My iPhone 7's display is considerably warmer and less brighter than that of my 6S. The difference is very obvious when I hold both phones side by side. Is anyone else noticing this with their phone as well?

I do.
And, according to this thread, we're far from the only ones.

That's one review of a hand picked sample. A lot of MR readers would say otherwise. I.e. worse than the 6 series on their phone.

Basically this review means jack. Too many new ip7 owners are complaining of yellow dim screens. This review sounds more like a paid ad from Apple.
So now Display Mate is being paid by Apple. I guess Samsung paid them also for the Note 7 review. If you read the gentleman said that would be a response using a handpicked model. He said he bought on from Verizon, try again troll.....

Easy solution- stop giving them money. Don't like the way Apple does business? Don't give them your business. If you think you're getting the short end of the stick, stop buying their sticks. Those of us that still feel like we're getting what we want will continue to buy Apple products, and those that don't have other options.

He was never interested in the iPhone 7.

IPhone 7, or 6ss, whatever you want to call it, it is turning out to be a decent upgrade overall.

I don't like change for the sake of having something look new. With the exception of removing the headphone jack (for some as it doesn't bother me), this has been a nice upgrade.

I've had every iPhone model except the 5c..... to me the 7+ is the best iPhone yet

That was asked and answered already, it was not the auto brightness being disabled.

Meanwhile Displaymate class the Note 7 as having the best display ever fitted to ANY mobile device including the iPhone 7.
Such a shame early reports indicate OLED screens will only be for the special edition giant phone slab Apple will launch next year.
I think LCD has had its day now.

Stoked to hear that. I think photographers are more aware of and care more about display quality/rendition.

Looking forward to getting a 7+ when the dust settles down. The display and new camera should be a nice upgrade from my two year old 6+.

I love how Apple apologists always are careful to proclaim a "good enough" threshold in specs that includes all of Apple's products.

Obviously devices are not always held at arm's length. Higher pixel density shows more detail which can be appreciated by closer inspection. Well, unless you're an old geezer in need of reading glasses....or an Apple fanboi.

Even then, this isn't true.

Higher res is easily distinguishable even at arms length.

When the 7s increases the resolution these same people will be heralding it as the second coming. Whatever.

I have a 7 that doesn't suffer yellow screen syndrome.

It's indistinguishable from my 6s.

I would like to see pics here side by side 6s or Plus versus their 7 or Plus for brightness comparison.

We already done it elsewhere, the 7 is not as bright in most cases.

And it is perceptible. It's within the range.

I work in color calibration engineering on input devices - you wouldn't notice the difference even with the two displays side by side and the worst hue of the delta e error being shown to you.
