I have to agree the design was nice, however, that OS is awful. Speaking of "that OS" I am not downing Android, just the particular flavor of crap Samsung loves to layer on it.

Totally 100% disagree. I used to hate Touchwiz myself but I have found ZERO reason for the hate on Samsung's newer devices. I have used the Samsung S5, S6, S7, S7Edge, Note5, Note7, and J3. These all use an improved version of Touchwiz (especially S7 and newer) and quite frankly it's pretty good from what it used to be. You can always use a different launcher anyway so again, why the hate?

One thing I never liked about having Android in vanilla straight from Google is there are no notification badges which is something I prefer and it is something Touchwiz gives you.

As expected, this has turned into an iPhone vs. Android thread, which I suppose makes sense.

Wireless charging would be nice. A heartbeat sensor is nifty too, but if the phone had one, fewer people would probably get an Apple Watch, so... How about fast charging? And an AMOLED screen? What about paying for things at card terminals that don't support NFC, such as fuel pumps? The list can go on... Then of course there's the software. What if I want to place an icon outside of a grid? What if I want different wallpapers per home screen page? What if I want to run two apps side-by-side? Or disable animations? NFC pairing with anything other than AirPods? Yet another list that can be quite lengthy. However, software really comes down to control, which Apple continues to not provide -- at all -- to iOS users.

And no, relying on third-party accessories to achieve features doesn't count.

It's only a gimmick if it's a feature that you don't use or find useful, right?

File transfer is the useful feature. Bumping phones to accomplish it when hitting phones together provides no benefits (either actual, or to user experience) is a gimmick, in my opinion. It looks cool in an ad or to do it once. But after that sending files across the room is easier.

Lol dude, I left off the /S at the end of my post because I thought my tone was self-evident.

Oh, sorry mate it completely passed me by! Haha. I guess nothing on this forum would surprise me :)

Uh, privacy. Not disturbing those around you. Concentration. The basest argument is it's an accepted form of use for wired headphones, while a wired headphone connected to a watch on someone's arm is a pretty stupid idea. Prolly why no one does it anymore. I gotta be honest with you. Discussing a headphone jack in relation to a watch seem absurd in it's premise alone. Let's just agree that I think it's not analogous to a headphone jack in a phone or laptop. We'll also agree that you somehow think it's applicable.

I'll admit I stretched the comparison a bit far. I just find it interesting how something that can cause such controversy in one product is the most sensible thing to do in another, despite how similar these devices are in terms of what a user can accomplish with them.

Non-removable RAM has upset people in the MacBook Pros, but the idea of it in an iPad is just as absurd as a headphone jack on a Watch, right?
[doublepost=1483054548][/doublepost]
That makes even less sense. Perhaps if they stopped with their unhealthy fascination with thinness, then we'd still have a phone jack.

I don't think they just meant thinness, but overall smallness. Space in an iPhone - even one thick enough to make the camera bump go away - is still at a greater premium than on the MacBook Pro.

All of this is irrelevant anyway because Apple explained why they kept the port on the laptops, where they feel it isn't needed on the phone.

The iMac did away with serial ports because USB was clearly better and where the industry would go. I think Cook missed the lesson there: It's wasn't that Apple products are so cool that customers follow whatever they say, it was that Jobs paid attention to what was going to happen anyway and was on the leading edge of it (but not bleeding edge ... he did away with modems, but not too early). A headphone jack is not a serial bus; if anything it's more like a lightbulb screw: been around for over 100 years because it works. Apple makes its mark with WOW products no one has thought to bring to market yet. They suck when trying to build a better mousetrap ... their (well Job's) genius was redefine what a mousetrap WAS. Making average products with stripped away functionality at above average prices is what nearly tanked them in the early 90s. Hopefully they didn't blow all their moola on that spaceship and can ride this out until someone with some vision comes in. Still hate windows; still prefer Mac, but some days it's more work than others to like the one you love.

Wasn't the old motto - Macs are so easy to use. Funny how that is changing. I'd say Windows is getting to be much easier to use than a good ol' Apple product.

Love the lightbulb socket analogy. Perfect!

What a bunch of crap. What "wow" factor does Samsung have? Other than refinement of gimmicks, without a leap in technology, phones have plateaued.

I'm glad Apple is waiting and taking their time with the redesign. Remember - Apple is never first, but usually always the best.

People get upset over a headphone jack, but not over an exploding phone. And yet people question the values of Apple and not Samsung.

I would argue the dual camera / telescopic zoom is a major feature as the jump in camera quality between the 6s is quite large.
Samsung can fix an exploding phone but Apple won't add a port.

Future iPhones will be made in India copying what Xiaomi has already done. Expect threads between made in China iPhones vs made in India iPhones. Samsung likely removes the headphone jack for the S8 and decides to make their phones in India too as they follow Apple's goofy trends.

Smartphone debating has become a joke. Waiting on the Google Andromeda notebook.

I had the iPhone 6 Plus (in gold) - a great phone for it's time however just under 2 years later the lightning port was malfunctioning, which I use for syncing (WiFi takes too long) and charging and realised it was not always detecting the charger either so did my own troubleshooting and tried the same genuine charger / cables on my other Apple devices - no issues - it was the phone lightning port.

The Apple AASP advised they cannot fix the fault in-store so Apple offered my a iPhone 6S Plus as a replacement (at no extra cost under Australian Consumer Law) as the 6 Plus was no longer produced, and then I read about the "touch disease" and later battery issues and thought not taking a risk on a 6 Series with these issues plus the iPhone 7 plus had been released, and opted for the iPhone 7 Plus instead - paid $190 "upgrade" to Apple after 2 years for a brand new phone iPhone 7 plus - not really complaining - absolute bargain.

I agree that the external viewpoint between the 6 Plus I had and the new 7 Plus, despite the removal of the headphone jack it looks identical, plus a different "camera bump" on the rear. Internally everything has been beefed up, but retains the same visual identity as the 6 Plus / 6S Plus. The baffling part to me is Apple did not keep the antenna bands the same as the chassis colour, on the gold and rose gold colours, yet the other colours have colour coded antenna lines - very strange indeed. I opted for Black (originally chose Jet Black but was hard for Apple to get).

As for the "lack of compelling" features, I value a tight integration of security, hardware, software all in one form - which Apple has pulled off successfully for years and no one else has matched it yet. Android based on the other hand is still based on the bloated Java language and requires more ram due to "data collection routines" due to it's Java heritage to clean up the system. Android is simply not as secure and cannot be trusted especially when it comes to "dodgy" apps and malware and viruses, and to date I have not seen an Android phone runs as smoothly or fluidly as an iPhone with iOS. I do believe people consider "security" a compelling feature, unless they don't really care. Performance wise, Apple seems to be the better choice.

People need to look beyond the marketing, beyond they hype and compare security and App reliability and functionality based on the two OS's. To me the clear winner is iOS as no other phone OS matches it, but bare in mind these are both "ecosystems" so make your choice wisely otherwise switching can be an expensive proposition.

Well pretty sure the Apple Nation was looking for their divine leader to say it's OK to go wireless.

Ok, you want to experience wireless in a new way? Drive from Omaha Nebraska to Salt Lake City via Interstate in a car without a bluetooth stereo, but that does have a tape deck. You could buy a cassette to phono jack converter which would allow you to play but NOPE, your phone no longer has a phono jack.

And just to increase your wireless fun you can only use a streaming service to play music on your trip, no music pre-loaded onto your phone. Apple Music, Pandora, Google Music, Spotify, you choose. You will really be impressed by the miles and miles of silence you will get because you can't get a decent signal. And, depending on your provider, you can easily get billed for data-overages when you have a signal through some small time company deep in the heart of flyover country that bill your major network big time, because it's the only way for them to make money since there aren't enough local customers, and your network passes the cost on to you. Fun, fun, fun. And you probably will take pictures, as you will be passing through some of the most scenic areas of the U.S., so you can upload your data to the cloud while driving. Sure, since many of these areas are 1 to 3G at best it will take a while, maybe a long while, but maybe you have one of those no limit data plans. Of course, most of those throttle your speed after so many gigabits of data so don't try to upload too many videos.

This doesn't just affect people who live in these regions but also people who travel to these areas, for whatever reason. Their work sends them there, they drive trucks or trains, or people just on vacation. This country doesn't have the infrastructure for a wireless world, and in some parts of the U.S. it will never be economically feasible. The only way some parts of the U.S. will gain fast, good and affordable signals is if it is subsidized somehow. Or someone finally does put up a 1000 satellites that provide coast to coast coverage.

Finally, and as far as I am concerned, most importantly to me, no bluetooth set, not even the new ones, sound as good as wired headphones. If there was no difference in sound, and if the battery life on the headphones was good enough it wouldn't be an issue. But they aren't and so to me it is an issue. To you it might not be. But don't expect me to be loyal to a company that isn't loyal back.

Sorry to get you all wound up ... but it was a dig ... boss says go wireless ... the thundering herd goes wireless cheering all the way. For me, hey, the dongle works on my 7 and I'm OK with it.

What do people expect more in a phone?
  • An unbreakable screen so I don't need to use a case on gorgeous looking screens
  • More storage that doesn't cost an unrealistic amount of fake dollars to add, perhaps they can add an SD slot.
  • a Phone that works cross platform better now that I have replaced my MBP for a Dell XPS, that iPhone works in its ecosystem, but not as good outside it.
  • Smaller bezels
  • Better camera on all phone sizes, not just phablets.
  • Better navigation. Apple maps sucks as a nav. Waze is leaps and bounds better than Apple maps, but I just bought a Tom Tom go 6200 after 2 years of using waze and the tom tom is much better in 'almost' every way.
  • A phone that works on your dashboard without shutting down because it is too hot.
  • A phone that makes it easier to get your files off/on it.
  • Standard jacks
  • Cheaper price, I hate paying over $1000 for a phone, Apple is just milking customers at the moment.

Nothing, that's not the point.

The headphone jack is dying, end of story.

Somehow in 3 years time when no phones have headphone jacks I don't think people will be bitching endlessly about it....

The only advantage that Bluetooth has over a hard connection is that it's wireless. It's inferior technology in every other way delivering worse sound quality and introducing lag, while being battery dependent.

If Apple was going to go wireless they should have introduced an improved technology instead of essentially forcing customers to purchase a pair of their headphones based on an existing mediocre standard. Until that happens I'm not giving up on wired headphones and will not purchase a phone without a 3.5mm jack.

And to add insult to injury the DA in the lighting to 3.5mm jack dongle is of such poor quality that is sounds worse than the standard jack it replaced.

Included in the box... which plugs into the cassette adapter.

You're right... a trip of 931 miles would be awful without audio from your phone. But thankfully it's not as dire a situation as you paint it.

How's that working out for you on airline in-flight entertainment?

...and your point is?

About 20 years ago I paid nearly $200 for a pair of Etymotic earphones.
I'm still using them and I ONLY use them when flying. Horses for courses.
I can still plug them into the latest iPhone7. It does have a jack adaptor you know.

Battery I hear you mumble?
Well if you are a seasoned traveller you'll know that before a flight you charge to 100% and in flight you switch to Airplane Mode which greatly reduces battery drain.

You did say "entertainment" right?
You do know that most long haul flights have terrific inflight entertainment and you aren't limited to a good paper back and your personal music collection for the whole journey.

Sorry, I'm answering the question I put to you for you. Was their a point to that statement?

You still aren't explaining why you think it's a gimmick. You place two phones on each other, and the file is sent. No messing around with turning things on, or who to send something to, or anything else.

Would you rather manually pair your device to a Bluetooth speaker, or tap your phone on it for a second so that it pairs automatically?

I agree. The iPhone 7 doesn't have any "wow" factor to it. More just things we have come to expect because the other manufactures already do most of it (aside from dual camera) but for the general user... I don't think that's much to care about and we have come to expect the faster graphics and CPU every year anyway so that's nothing new either. I kept my iPhone 6 Plus. Nothing I cared about in 6S or the 7 so far. I'm hoping the 2017 iPhone changes that.
I also stayed with my 6+, front the same way..But given Apple's attitude lately, I went ahead and bought a Mate 9 last week and I love it. I said this on another thread and sorry to repeat, but Apple's pushing it's consumers or base away and their are really nice options out there. I'm using my Mate 9, and it's a lot better for me in a lot of ways. I can tell you that the predictive text and corrective spelling is spot on. Typing is faster, more accurate the first time and easier. Apple Music on my Android works better with my BMW. Everytime I got into my car with my 6+ it was a stuttering music or 10 min of trying to connect. My Mate 9, picks up where it left off quickly and I can enjoy my drive Everytime. Native Google maps.. is so great, no more lost with Apple Maps..their is also a driving app to make directions to a location even faster. Dual.SIM cards for when I travel, so no more changing SIM cards on my iPhone and having my iCloud locked and no way to receive an SMS.. Also, the finger scanner to unlock is laser fast on my Mate 9. Dual apps, and I can go on.. even 1password has its own keyboard for filling not only webpages but also Apps!

So you go Apple selling your dongles and blue tooth headsets, removing SD card slots and 3.5 jacks and push your customers to think different and try something else...Happens to be great options out there and I'm enjoying learning something new

Yet still destroys the comp when it comes to sales..so if Apple die then the rest will too

Apple sales are falling across their product range. If that continues someone else will pick up those sales and benefit so your conclusion is patently wrong.

You've just taken away the the charging point for your phone. Without additional adapters you have only a few hours at most. You won't last as far as you can drive in a day, if you've planned on a 2 day drive, and you definitely will be listening to the sounds of silence if you're going straight through. And as I said, to me sound quality is important. Wired headphones sound better, dollar for dollar, and premium wired sound better than any available Bluetooth headphones. And if I do buy an adapter I have something to lose or misplace, as small as it is. I could also misplace wired headphones. And then stop at the next truck stop and replace them. There will be a next truck stop, and they will have corded headphones. They probably won't have a lightning to phono jack adapter. Someplace in my travels are several jaybird headphones, lost trying to leave a plant and trying to make a 1 to 3 hour drive to an airport, or get a start on a 10-13 hour drive home. I don't listen to them while driving, and if I use the company car I have Bluetooth, but until recently a lot of rental cars my company booked didn't come Bluetooth enabled. Some still don't. And from comments here and reviews on the adapter, they don't sound as good as the old phono jack did on iPhones and still does on every other piece of audio equipment.

As I said TO ME sound quality is important. To someone else it can be less so. I don't fault someone who has different likes and dislikes but to be blunt Apple could leave a phono jack in AND have their new Airpods. If they made the phone a little longer, wider, thicker or a combination of these not only could they do both but also put a larger battery in so the phone could run longer without needing to be charged. For the last few generations of iPhones I did not get the absolute fascination with thin. Maybe you do, maybe that's what you want in a phone. I want usability. If they can make it look good that's a bonus, but not if it compromises use or reliability. I think the iPhone 7 crossed that line. I hope the iPhone 2017 gets back to introducing features not found elsewhere or not implemented well. If all accomplishes is being thinner or if it costs close to or over $1000.00 to buy something improved over a 6s then I'll look elsewhere. Apples vision for the future and mine would evidently not coincide.

It's a great phone you got - the Huawei Mate 9. But are you seriously comparing the iPhone 6+, now an over 2 year old phone, with a phone that was released last month???

You mention having dual sim - and I totally agree. That would be a nice feature, instead of having to carry 2 x phones, like I do now.

I do wish I had a Pixel phone camera to test. I've read wonderful and not so wonderful things about this phone. Nothing beats hands on experience. I will drool over it from afar. :p

I almost bought a Pixel tonight but decided I did not want to give Google total control over my phone usage especially as I'm an Android noob, so Moto Z Play Droid it was. Plus didn't want to spend those prices on another phone.
