It's more like, you take a pig, put lipstick on it. It looks great. Then, you let it out and it runs to the nearest pool of mud to jump into. That's called Android.

It's because it SHOULD NOT be waterproof ;)
The water needs to know where to hit the battery. The contacts are directly behind the fake holes.
You guys are harsh...

Yeah maybe 5 years ago!

Technically you may be correct, but you really need to define "better". The iPhone speakers can only be described by various degrees of bad and mediocre. And no, two speakers will not make the experience "twice as good". So you're suggesting the iPad Pro sounds 4 times as good as the iPad with 2 speakers? Did you consider part of that equation might be the additional space inside the case to accommodate larger resonating chambers and speakers? Not to mention a larger batter to power a more powerful amp?

Your math is off. The "regular" iPad has 2 speakers...And the pro 4....So it has double the amount of speakers. Not 4 times as many. And yes, I'd say my iPad pro absolutely sounds twice as good as my regular iPad. And I also believe that if the iPhone gained another speaker at the bottom it would also sound twice as good. And when I say "good" i'm not saying either has quality audio..Cause with 1, 2 or 4 speakers they're still all terrible. But i'm not really looking for quality audio from my phone speakers at this point. I'm sure in the not so distant future phones will sound just as good as the small BT speakers we all use now, but until then I'll be happy with a louder, 2 speaker, stereo, mono sounding iphone.

Can somebody at Apple please comment here in the forum and detail what is going to occur in September going through the news articles of the past few weeks and dispelling the rumours?????

Lots of mixed feelings and emotions, pictures of exhaust pipes and what not here at the moment.

Using a "revenue is bigger" argument is not good news for you... I hope you realize that...Because that means that even though adoption is not yet widespread (as represented by unit sales)...and as such you'll be the only kid on the block relying on bluetooth when the rest of the world still provides AUX cable (cars, cheap running headphones)...and still you get to give even more money to Apple.

This is not a scenario in which you win.

I'm not mentioning the article to win or lose....don't care either way....I mentioned it to show that the money in the industry is flowing towards wireless tech. The major players will follow the money...that's all I'm saying....the post was about that...the irrespective of our own feelings, this is where everything is heading...the masses will adopt in droves and drive that 17% even higher and with economies of scale in manufacturing price points will drop across some segments of the category further driving adoption...the tipping point has been reached....there's no turning back

Nothing new here.
Even cars have dual exhaust exits but only one with an actual exhaust pipe...

Age of the looks fellas...

That's not OEM. It looks like a crappy welding job on the left where the muffler is attached to it, and that bracket with the exposed bolt sticking out in the middle is too exposed to not be an add-on.

Maybe the "symmetry" is also tactile. I know I find myself feeling around for the bottom of the iPhone in the dark to plug in the lightning cable.

Not sure why you would need tactile feedback on the left-right orientation when a Lightning jack can be plugged in either way.

Drilling the extra holes makes the unit at least 0.00003 grams lighter. A bullet point for the marketing department.

I know you're joking, but it would mess up the water resistance of the device to have holes drilled in it with nothing behind them. Apple would have to add an extra case section behind the holes to reseal the interior -- and that extra material would add more weight than simply not drilling the holes in the outer case to start with.

That is absolutely pathetic Apple! WTF is the point in removing the much used headphone jack then?
Getting rid of it, is the point. Single-purpose data ports are an insult to the essence of a multi-purpose computer. All non-universal ports got to die and reactionary users with them. Apple will live in the future, if you all follow or not.

I seriously hope this is just a rumor. But if it's not, Apple has really hit rock bottom. They unnecessarily remove the headphones jack and you replace it with nothing?

This is so hilariously greedy and anti consumer I almost admire that this is what they're putting out amid falling sales.

This is the first year of declining iPhone sales. Maybe they said screw it, this year is a wash anyway. Make a mediocre update and then next year come out with the real phone and they can boast about the highest upgrade numbers ever. Look how we turned it around!

I don't think part of Tim Cook's 'doubling down on security' includes coming on to an internet forum to spill the beans before the official announcement.

That would seem a little odd if this turns out to be true. Keeping a single speaker and using the opposing side for the mic almost seems wasteful. I would bet that Apple could have two speakers and the mic in the same space.
reminds me of the iPhone 5s

This may sound like sarcasm but it's not: is there actually any benefit to having two speakers that close together?
more volume? have you tried to talk on speaker phone in say, a construction work site? on a retail building project? during a storm outside? maybe just more volume for movies so i don't have to keep it on max volume to watch a movie or so don't have to hold it literally 2 feet from my face lol.

I don't need left and right. But with the grills on both sides, I can touch any part of the bottom of the phone and know I have the bottom. The top of the phone is smooth. It's not a big thing, but it helps.

I don't really care about the extra speaker. It's not like 2 speakers would've made any difference. If this was done to greatly improve the camera, I'm all for it. In fact, take the other speaker out too because the iPhone's camera is Horrible. I have kids and I have never taken a good shot of them with my iPhone 6. That is, unless they are posed as "stills" in perfect lighting, which is never. I would love a cellphone camera which is actually excellent. The iPhone's camera has always been mediocre.

It's quite amusing reading comments from people trying so hard to justify the current rumors as a net positive. :D

It's like watching a video of someone running into a glass door or a wall, over and over and over. :p:D

Actually if sales are falling de-contenting a product is a great way to make the profit back. Fact is even if the iPhone 7 sells less then the iPhone 6 or 6s did, they are still going to sell a crap load of them. If you can save a little by taking out the 3.5mm jack and replacing it with a fake grille you have just lowered the cost of production. It might not be a lot, but in the numbers Apple is selling it is enough to really assist profits if sales are slightly down.

It's just bean counters going to work to maximize profit and during a down cycle it's not a bad idea if you have a product that is as popular as the iPhone. People are going to buy it anyhow in massive numbers.

All non-DRM enabling ports must die. Even if there is no reasonable* alternative to many.

Charging YET ANOTHER device daily, with a chance of it crapping out when you time away from a power outlet is extended, when no such problem existed prior, is NOT a reasonable alternative.

It's the first clear sign that it will be called the "iPhone Air"! :)

Plus, it means they can remove the 8" noisy fan and use the extra grille for ventilation. ;)

It's pretty funny how so many are reacting as if this rumor were true or a fait accompli!

As Miranda's mother would say, "Such fun!" :D

I'm not so sure. Anything is possible these days in efforts to ramp up attention and interest.

The new apple, save money on a quality DAC and headphone jack, and save money on a second speaker.

iPhone 8, dual speakers, now that's innovation !

2 speakers will not make it stereo , little difference, but I hate designs that have fake components, to me it's cheap.

Welcome to Tim cooks penny pinching apple. He only cares about how much money he gets out of us, don't be fooled by his "I'm your best mate, looking out for you" routine...his among the greediest CEOs out there, and fake.
