Here's the other reason why 8's aren't selling. Most retail outlets didn't order them. They have signs up everywhere but go try and buy one? I went to 3 different ATT stores just to see what their inventory was. All said the same thing, had 20 of each phone.. that's all. Hmm.. can't sell what you don't order. They said the X is what they have orders for. I laughed at 2 managers who said that.. they aren't getting any of them. I can guarantee it!

Customers also feel that the iPhone X is too expensive and the ugly notch is a no buy along with lost of confidence in the new Face ID failing on stage.
you're making some huge assumptions here based off of nothing (other than maybe your own opinion)..

maybe wait until after November before making the recommendations to Apple about fixing the mess.

Y’know, the 8 is actually jam packed with upgrades even over the 7. Any other year and we’d be clamoring over it. Thing is, the X is everything the 8 is and more. So people are choosing to wait and get that one instead. I know I am.

It’s not an opinion, the entire thing has changed internally. There isn’t a single component that hasn’t changed, been beefed up or upgraded in one form or other.

Like I said the only thing to not change is the screen size and form factor, everything else from the cameras, modem, SOC, sensors, display technology, materials, Bluetooth, charging methods, display inputs, water resistance, audio chips, durability and battery life has changed dramatically.

Thanks for making my point for me.

Apple could have given us a small surprise for the 8, such as putting the dual-lens camera into the standard iPhone 8.

I'm not sure why Apple has this idea that the Plus is the "premium" phone - I will never buy the Plus due to its size but I would be happy to pay for the upgraded camera.

Wonder if Apple has a contingency plan. iPhone 8 is a flop but it's no surprise if they listen to customers expressing since 9/12 revealing that it's the same stale four year old design. Customers also feel that the iPhone X is too expensive and the ugly notch is a no buy along with lost of confidence in the new Face ID failing on stage. If Apple is expecting iPhone X sales to make up for the iPhone 8 flop they might be in for another rude awakening with further lost of stock market cap (already ~60B lost with potentially another 60B or more if iPhone X is a flop).

How can Apple fix this mess?

1) Stop being greedy and lower the iPhone 8 (really 7S) price to $669 starting

2) Lower the price of iPhone X to $799 starting

3) If they want people to pay full $999 starting for iPhone X they need to delay the release to redesign and remove the ugly notch and as a bonus make the camera flush

It is way to soon to say iPhone 8 is a flop. Apple has an unprecedented seven different iPhone models for sale this holiday season (iPhone 6s, 6s+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+, X) and since Apple probably gets better margin on the older phones they will still view it as a "win" if they still sell more phones year over year even if an increasing percentage of sales are people buying older phones.

Tim Cook might view all of this as a "win" but Steve J is rolling in his grave. This is exactly the brand destruction and dilution that he flipped out about when he returned to Apple after it was nearly exterminated due to mismanagement.

Tim Cook, supply chain genius and epic mismanager who is going to have to apologize to millions of customers that they won't be able to buy iPhone X until Q2 2018.

Hmmm. I wonder how many are in the same boat as I am…

I'm on the Upgrade Program, but based on these reports went ahead and jumped from my 7 to an 8 instead of waiting until early 2018 (at best) for an X.

This is the first year I won't be getting the latest/greatest from Apple, and I'm fine w/ that.

I'd rather not fight the masses for limited quantities, and I figure the X will be in more "mainstream" shape next fall. Kinks worked out, etc.

Wireless charging is pretty much a waste of time if you need to put it on a pad to charge it, it means you cant use it whilst charging it. If you plug it in using a charging lead at least you can still use it, and lets face it plugging it in isn't difficult. I just put mine on a charging dock, it is very easy to put it on then pick it up when required.

The wireless charging nowhere near justifies the outrageous cost, my toothbrush charges like this and it only cost £25.00.

How many people really care about the bezels on a phone? I know the writers at the Verge are obsessed by it but does the average consumer care? And if that’s really important to someone well that’s what the X is for.

I'm sure many will care once Apple reduces bezel size. Suddenly it will become the greatest invention since sliced bread.

Clearly the 8 and 8plus are mispriced. Apple needs to understand simple price elasticity of demand stuff. They have over done it with the price rise and their inability to keeping up with shrinking bezels on the competition.

And don't get me started on the 5w charger, no wireless earphones, no wireless charging... on a premium product.

The best business decision now would be to drop the price.... or face poor sales on their mainstay product.

Too much greed. What a mess.

my 6 is still kicking replaced the battery.
I bought the 8+ yesterday and I returned it today.
Why?
I can't take it with the dongle especially for my car like in insufferable having to carry this everywhere
There was no really big things that made me fall in love with it.
The price(1268$ Canadian for unlocked) was not really sweet.
I just realized that I waited for the 6 when I got my iPhone 4, and I went through the 4s,5,5s and then the 6.
This I would've waited for the 6s,7, and 8. I'll wait next year when I make the real jump.
Also what the hell this iPhone should have been called 7S! Don't try to fool people!

Me, exactly. Except now I'm regretting it. It just doesn't feel worth starting over with payments on a phone that really isn't that much different. Once you have it and the newness wears off (in 10 minutes), you might feel the same way. That's just me though.

For anyone wonders why iPhone sales are slow....

Even the iPhone 7 not even the 7 plus is more expensive over here. The iPhone 8 comes in even more expensive Makes me wonder what the iPhone X will be

This is in Europe and the same goes in china and India. No wonder I see less and less iPhones. It’s sad but Apple really isn’t competitive anymore

When our only option was iOS with bezel or Android, we chose the bezel. Now that we will be able to have iOS without the bezel or home button, that new iPhone 8 is going to start looking old quick. That's when the tremors and eye twitches begin. Next thing you know, it'll be November and you'll have paid hundreds of dollars on your iPhone 8 to upgrade early and feverishly checking your order status every 5 minutes for your iPhone X that doesn't ship until February.

Interesting but true story. Our last Au Pair was from Austria. She and everyone in her family had a Droid. We gave her an iPhone 5S and later a 6 to use on our family plan while she stayed with us for over a year (she extended past the one year).

She went home and was excited to begin using her HTC phone that she had only barely bought before coming to the USA. Imagine our surprise when she messaged us a month later with iMessage.... she had broken down and bought an iPhone 6S.

She said that it was just too hard to go from iOS which "just worked" to Android which was slow and burdensome. She missed iCloud, FaceTime and iMessage. She missed having an iPhone.

So yes, Android is cheaper and you often get very good hardware for the price.

But it's still Android and a lot of people will pay the premium to have an Apple device.

The problem is that there isn’t much difference between iOS and android anymore. Even the settings are almost the same. Together with better and far cheaper hardware and much better free services like unlimited photo upload in the cloud, better maps (in Europe google maps is lightyears ahead of Apple maps), google now. I’m sad to see the gap is widening fast over here. Maybe you're lucky in the USA but it’s really hard to use FaceTime, messages or any Apple service over here. Even Apple Pay still doesn’t work. So there isn’t any benefit using Apple over here instead of paying almost twice the amount of money for an iPhone 7 (not even the plus) instead of getting the Galaxy S8 with twice the amount of ram and super Amoled display. And then you have huawei with for even less with comparable offerings as the Galaxy S8. At least you can understand now that iPhones are fading away over here. It’s not that people don’t want them but it’s surely nothing worth double the price. Apple should be aware of this. Once people go android (the modern version) people don’t tend to come back. Many of my friends already did.

It seems that consumers have caught onto the fact that Apple is selling pretty much the same phone for the 4th straight year now with nothing truly new or innovative about it.

I didn’t. Far from it.

I just pretty much gave you a specific example of someone with a newer generation Android phone who was willing to pay more to get an Apple device... and this was someone with a very limited discretionary income.

I have no idea what share of the market Apple has in your country, but I know that in Europe Android has a far larger market share than Apple and Apple is not willing to slash their prices in order to take more market share.

I'd prefer an iPhone with smaller bezels. I'm guessing a lot of people would too. What's not to like about a larger screen in the same size device?

And that is making me sad because at the moment the old iPhone 7 (not the plus) with 32 gb of ram is even more expensive than an Galaxy S8 with 64 gb of ram. So who will buy an iPhone. Apple is placing itself out of the market. That's what I’m telling you. It's too greedy and getting yesterday news over here.

I still don't see the problem. Apple is still selling product in Europe and, if anything, expanding presence with introduction of more Apple stores.

There's a smaller market for a Tag Hauer or Omega wristwatch than for a Timex but Tag and Omega still sell tons of product in Europe.... and the price difference between an iPhone 8 and a Samsung Galaxy 8 is nowhere near what it is on things like high end watches and low end watches.

At the end of the day, is it worth it to you to spend the extra $$? You say that Android pretty much does the same things as iOS and just as well, that has not been my experience at all.

Is Apple really any better? Is it simply a fashion statement or trying to be trendy or flaunt? Every user has to decide for themselves but certainly nobody is holding a gun to anyone's head making them buy a product they can't justify the price of.

This kind of reminds of the threads around why anyone would buy a $1200 Macbook Air when $300 Chromebook is "just as good". Problem is, it's not "just as good" and consumers know that.

The silver lining if you want to call it that is that appetite for Apple products in China appears insatiable.... not sure if it's because of better language support, status, or just people feeling Apple is superior but it shows that in at least that market Apple have turned things around as their market share used to be pathetic.
