The 8 is a ho-humm update, especially for those on a 6s and up.

Lack of any wow features, is also a major factor - wireless charging has been around for so long, there's a long established standard, so Apple isn't really blazing any trails with the 8 compared to other competitors.

They aren't blazing any trails with the X either. Name one thing that phone can do that say, a Note 8 cannot?

Are you really trying to tell me iPhone 5S is the same as iPhone 8?

Even if you meant the 6 it’s still not comparable. Same shell? Almost. Same phone? Not even close.

6, 6S, 7 and 8 are all the same form factor phones with extremely similar features. Yes, the 8 and 6 are very different when it comes to performance (CPU/GPU, camera, etc.) but otherwise they are more similar than dissimilar.

Disagree. Only things similar are the form factor and display size.

2014 called. They want their design back.

I'm willing to bet, Apple's going to release the same phone next year and call it the "iPhone 9" and the "iPhone 9 Plus" with a few internal modifications... make the battery even smaller (because well... it's got a faster and more efficient chip, let's shrink it down a bit), improved front and rear cameras (the norm), and new colors (so strangers can instantly tell you're rocking the latest and greatest iPhone model from a mile away and won't think you're a loser).

Oh... and maybe bump up the price tag...

Thanks for the info. I meant to ask for the x only. Lol I could get a MacBook for that price!
heh, somewhat fortunately for me, i don't use my iPhone as a storage device so 64GB is fine.. ;)

So I have an iPhone 7 (my wife a 6s) and I had a chance to look at the 8 in store (two of my co-workers also have an 8+). Yeah, the same design as the 6, 6s and 7. Just has the glass over it for the wireless charging but that's about it. No reason whatsoever for me or even my wife to upgrade to this. I do like that it has Tru-Tone with an improved camera but ultimately, it's the X I would consider if I decided to upgrade at all in the next year. I do hope those who have the 8 enjoy it though.

Ha! I am actually planning on buying the SE to replace my 6! I am cheap! I want 8+ for the camera but it is too friggin huge. I keep trying to convince myself about 8+ but get put off every time in the store and try the phone. So if I am going with a 8 size, I might as well buy a size I actually like. And the SE internals are decent enough with the same camera as 6S. So it will keep me going for an year or two. I wonder if I should consider 6s for the snappier touchID and force-touch and live photos though

I would suggest that if your primary reason for upgrading is the camera, then go for the 7 Plus at least. Otherwise, stay with what you have. The SE is a great phone with the perfect size to fit in my pocket (just that sometimes I have trouble seeing the screen). If I was to upgrade, I would get the 8 Plus, primarily for the camera and display. I’ll just need bigger pockets.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. I've owned all of them and they are all extremely similar other than the differences I already mentioned.

The first "new" thing they've done since the iPhone 6/6+ is really the iPhone X and at $999 it will be interesting to see what the take rate on it is going to be with consumers.

iPhone 8 is just too expensive for what it is, it starts at £699 here in the uk for what isn't even a flagship phone. It should be priced about what the 7 is £549. I am just going to stick with my 6s, the upgrade just isn't with the money, Apple have just got too greedy.

Love this one---

This. The 8 is overpriced. The X is ludicrously overpriced and that is such a shame.

I was very keen on the X until the onstage demo and then they showed what full screen video looks like... no thanks.

Sadly though we all know next years version that MAY fix the notch issues and touch id will be EVEN MORE crazily priced than the X.

I am not skint by any means but Apples insane pricing one the last two years is leaving me behind. (A £150 for a wireless keyboard? LOL).

I don't understand how they can undercut everyone else tech with the AirPods and then go all gungho marketing price madness with everything else.

The animated emoticons :D

Seriously though I agree, the X represents apple catching up to Samsung in this regard

It’s not an opinion, the entire thing has changed internally. There isn’t a single component that hasn’t changed, been beefed up or upgraded in one form or other.

Like I said the only thing to not change is the screen size and form factor, everything else from the cameras, modem, SOC, sensors, display technology, materials, Bluetooth, charging methods, display inputs, water resistance, audio chips, durability and battery life has changed dramatically.

Every time I upgrade, it's for a reason. And I guess I'm like a lot of people on here, you'll buy it if you can justify to to that wee voice in your head! "Yes, I need it, camera is so much better than the one on my iPhone 7 and Angry Birds is running a bit slow'.

Truth is, it's not sexy. For people who need a new phone now, it makes sense. But unless that's the case or your budget won't stretch, it doesn't really make sense to buy into Apple 'old' way of doing things/paradigm.

I'm not sure I'm sold on the X but I've always said that and then given in for some spurious reason or another. Thought that about the Apple Watch and now I'd never be without it. Even thought it about the iPad and I've got all three current sizes for different uses!

I'm hoping for some BOGO offers from carriers on iPhone 8 and 8 plus, AT&T or Tmobile. Without any other strings attached like that directTV requirements.

The S8 has a very nice screen, wireless charging. The X adopting these years old features yet selling them as ground breaking really irritates many Apple fans, myself included.
I don't defend X price at all.in fact I believe making 2 models; (one more premium) was a big mistake and an anti consumer strategy (8 should have never existed,X should have been the new iPhone model and not so expensive, no reason for that since every feature including edge to edge OLED display has been used by others before and much cheaper than X)

but it is what it is and we have to face reality:

the "very nice screen" of 8 is irrelevant when compared to significantly superior edge to edge OLED screen of X,so no chance there for 8.

wireless charging is also not a real buying factor since it has been around for years and is not a exclusive iPhone 8 feature anyway (people are used to it, no "hype effect") also X has that too.

if you compare 8 and 7,you will see there is minimal improvements, including ususal improvements that every new cycle will bring,so nothing particularly exciting going on compared to 7 series, specially when the body design is the same.
add to that the "better" "more premium" X,and it's clear why 8 has no chance.

Wonder if Apple has a contingency plan. iPhone 8 is a flop but it's no surprise if they listen to customers expressing since 9/12 revealing that it's the same stale four year old design. Customers also feel that the iPhone X is too expensive and the ugly notch is a no buy along with lost of confidence in the new Face ID failing on stage. If Apple is expecting iPhone X sales to make up for the iPhone 8 flop they might be in for another rude awakening with further lost of stock market cap (already ~60B lost with potentially another 60B or more if iPhone X is a flop).

How can Apple fix this mess?

1) Stop being greedy and lower the iPhone 8 (really 7S) price to $669 starting

2) Lower the price of iPhone X to $799 starting

3) If they want people to pay full $999 starting for iPhone X they need to delay the release to redesign and remove the ugly notch and as a bonus make the camera flush

iPhone X seems to have been very difficult to design and produce = expect bugs. It will take some time for developers to release compelling apps that leverage face recognition and other exclusive features. There seems to be little benefit in owning the iPhone X first unless you are an unconditional Apple fan.

IMHO, the sensible choice is to buy previous models which offer great value for money at a reduced price and wait for the new technology to become mainstream, freed from bugs and actually leveraged in useful apps. I would be curious how many iPhone SE/6s/7 they have sold since the price has been reduced considering it will probably take a year to get really great ARKit apps that are exclusive to the A11 Bionic processor.

iPhone 8 is a flop
I wouldn't say its a flop, and nothing even remotely acknowledging that would even be whispered from anyone from Apple. We'll hear how great the sales are.

I think the sales of the 8 will be low, but not to the point its considered a flop - just my $.02
