when people see phones like Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, and when they hear rumours and then confirmation of iPhone X which is a true upgrade both in design and in technology department , it's very natural that they have little or no interest in a slightly faster than old model in same old boring outdated body.
there is no way different colors could have changed that.

The S8 has a very nice screen, wireless charging. The X adopting these years old features yet selling them as ground breaking really irritates many Apple fans, myself included.

It seems that consumers have caught onto the fact that Apple is selling pretty much the same phone for the 4th straight year now with nothing truly new or innovative about it.

Apple should have had the guts to include an inductive charger in the box with these handsets like pretty much every other manufacturer does.

The only thing that Apple has going for it now honestly is the ecosystem and software. Their hardware designs are no longer cutting edge.

"Hi welcome to the Apple Store. How can I help you?"
"I'd like an iPhone"
"Great, what kind of price range are you looking to stay within?”
“About $400-$500” (hypothetical)
“Okay, great we have the iPhone 6s in that price range and if you wanted to spend just a bit more we also have the 7” (insert explanation of the difference between these models).

This isn’t rocket science, just basic sales.

If you're selling to a robot. Entire books have been written about why this is a bad way to treat customers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paradox_of_Choice

Newsflash: Windows 8 has a slow adoption rate, failed to gain traction, and people downgraded to Windows 7. Windows 10 saves the day.

iPhone 8 is selling poorly, failing to gain traction, and people sticking to iPhone 7-. iPhone X(10) is seeing huge demand.

Microsoft is rubbing on Apple.

Something tells me that 8 is a bad number. However 9 is a bad number too cause 7 8 9. The curse is real!

Went to our local Apple Store late Saturday afternoon and picked up two 8+ models, no problem. The store was busy, but it was a typical "Saturday busy." Usually they set up for long lines on a launch weekend, not so this time. The last time it was this easy to get a new phone on launch weekend was the 5s.

I really was speaking of the general public and not people who post on MR and have to have the latest and greatest Apple stuff.

I know plenty of people who'd be over the moon if they could buy a blue iPhone with a better camera and wireless charging.

I doubt any of them care that it looks, in most other respects, pretty much the same as the model before it. They're just not that discerning. They're people whose phones are paid off and they want a new one.

I agree with you. Many people in the past have purchased an iPhone because of the different color. Now that’s out the door! I myself want to see something different. Apple did a good thing by adopting the Oled and wireless charging. Even though Apple is extremely late with those two items. Now hopefully next year Apple will move forward with the advance Bluetooth technology and not 2yrs later. I enjoy apple products very much, they just have to come out with a Bang! I thought about upgrading my 6s plus for the 8 plus. Ever since i updated my phone to the new iOS I’m not really in a rush to get it now. My 6s plus looks brand new, runs smooth and I have no issues at all.

The demand for the 8-8+ is just not there. I really don’t think that people are going to be that crazy about the x.

Wait! Does anyone know what is the cost for the iPhone 256g?

Please read my opinion above.
Fair point, most consumers don’t know a lot about a new phone other than how it looks. Add to that Apple followers on this site also think the 8 is the “same phone as the 7”, and these are the people that are supposed to have more knowledge than the average consumer. Clearly that isn’t the case based on my readings of late.

With that, the 6 and X look different, therefore gain more attention. Consumers also care about price, so this year will be an interesting year for sure. I have yet to meet a person that is buying an X. My entire circle of friends and family use iPhones. People like their phones and aren’t willing to upgrade unless a “free” upgrade exists or there’s a major reason to do so.

Nope, Apple has asked suppliers to slow down parts delivery. Suppliers are only supplying about 40% of originally planned components.

Sure it’ll sell out, but NOT because Apple can’t make these devices fast enough.

But is that for real or speculation.

Apple are in the business of operating for profit, showing down parts to make less money doesn't compute.

Confession time: I ordered the 64gb 8 Plus knowing it would be a mild upgrade, but it would cost me a little less per month than my 128gb matte black iPhone 7 Plus did, so why not? I knew I could return it to Verizon if I changed my mind and really wanted to get the iPhone X instead. Turns out I should have just gone with my gut and waited.

Quick review:
  • Speed difference not noticeable. The 7 Plus is fast enough.
  • New portrait mode options are gimmicky.
  • The glass back feels good in the hand. Tackier, provides better grip than the slippery aluminum did. BUT, it fingerprints easily - looks nice other than that. Oh, and if you set it on the couch next to you, it will slide all over the place. The matte black one stays put. I assume the jet black iPhone 7 was slippery on fabric like this too.
  • Played a couple of AR games. Kind of cool. Can see some potential here.
  • Other than that, it's essentially the same as the 7 Plus as we all knew it would be.
Like everyone else is saying: buy it if you need it or have an older phone. If you want something new, wait for the X or whatever comes after it.

That's one of my points. I can get an iPhone 7 brand new for a lot less then the 8. Don't get me wrong, I think the all glass back is beautiful, but since I'm the type of person to put a case on the phone, there's little advantage - at least for me.
I understand. I remember the decision making process you went through picking out the IPhone SE. You're a responsible parent weighing value of features against their costs. I respect that. Everyone is at a different place in what their buying situation is so I'm trying to take the conversation away from valuing one person's perspective over another's and just talking in the abstract about spec and feature upgrades from one year to the next. I'm just laying out that they do exist and what they are. Then we each have to decide if it to worth it to us individually.

I'm wrestling with this quite a bit, actually. To keep myself from getting a bad case of the "want the new shiny" that might cloud my judgement I sweet talked Hubby into buying me a new purple case for my IPhone 7 Plus for our wedding anniversary when we were at the Apple Store looking at the new iPhones. Regardless of what my next iPhone is, the 7 Plus is staying with me for a good long while and then going to my Sister-in-law. I get her hand me down clothes and handbags and she gets my iPhones. :p Between the two of us doing that, we save each other quite a bit of money.

I assume the glass back is less durable than the aluminum. Can they be replaced when they crack?

Would it irritate you more if they never implemented them ever?

Apple releases iPhone 8, which includes wireless charging, glass case, and significant improvements to the camera, CPU, and GPU performance
Boo! This is the same old boring 4-year-old design! No one wants this! Bring on the X with its 4-digit price, face recognition technology, and weird aesthetic issues!

Apple releases iPhone SE, which is literally the internals of the 2014 iPhone 6S in the same case as a 2012 iPhone 5
Yeah! This is the best phone ever, and I wish Apple would go back to making every phone look like this!

Can't please everyone. Do people rush out and buy the new model year every time their car is upgraded?
Small, incremental changes for some
Radical, expensive changes for others

This is an accurate concern. There is simply no data to suggest “customers are waiting for the X”. Given that iPhone 7 sales declined from past years, we just don’t know the cause of lowers iPhone 8 sales yet.
We just don’t know the if there are decreased iPhone 8 sales yet.

Yeah not sure. I wouldn't want to find out. That said, if I ever dropped my phone hard enough to crack any part of it, I wouldn't want it anymore, be it an aluminum or glass back. So far I've been lucky with my phones.

Are you really trying to tell me iPhone 5S is the same as iPhone 8?

Even if you meant the 6 it’s still not comparable. Same shell? Almost. Same phone? Not even close.

Everyone is waiting for the X.

Or everyone has just bought an Android phone already.

Apple has not brought anything to the table since the iPhone 4S.

The X will be just as a disappointing sale. It's not an Apple is doomed post since there are enough dorks out there to still buy into their ********; but for the initiated, they 'ent the same company anymore.

SE = affordable iPhone in a great and proven design . Don't underestimate the amount of people who have had enough paying 2X SE for a phone these days..... And this is from someone that upgraded every year to the latest and best, its just got ridiculous....the x will cost me £1350 with apple care! HA! yeah crappy SE is a GREAT phone for the money

I didn't expect that Plus models are that lower on sales compared to the equivalent small models each year.
