Stumbled across an embarrassing meme...

"[Thanks to the iPhone X] the iPhone 8 is first smartphone to be obsoleted 25 minutes later."

I just don't see these selling super well. It's already more expensive than past years' full retail price for the entry model and if you're spending $700 why not just spend $1000? And if you don't plan on shelling out the money for the X then I see people going for the cheaper 7 or 6S. I don't know, I'm not Ming Chi Kuo, but that's just my opinion.
Completely agree. If you're already spending $700 on a phone, I can't imagine an additional $300 is really going to be a deal breaker for you. Also, if you're looking for a new phone, but also want something cost effective, chances are you don't care about tech and will go for last years model instead. They'll definitely sell, but I think the iPhone X is going to sell far better.

Do people really care so much about a camera to justify the purchase on these new devices? My 6S runs great and shows no signs of slowing down...it also got a free battery upgrade through Apple from a recall so it's good as new.

I don't think you're comparing apples to apples here. I don't remember all the differences between the 5s and 5c, but two that come to mind are the lack of TouchID and the polycarbonate shell of the 5c. FaceID is not the leap in convenience that TouchID was. Many people didn't use a passcode pre-TID because of the inconvenience. The 5c was noticableably more cheaply built with plastic as well. The 8 and X are both made out of primarily the same materials. Additionally, the 5c was pitched as a low-end varient to the "standard model" whereas the X is pitched as an ultra high-end version of the "standard model." The pitch is from a completely different angle.

Edit:
Just looked and the 5c also used an A6 chip while the 5s used an A7. The 8 and X both use A11 chips. Also the price difference was only $100 back then. It's really unsurprising to see that the 5c was ignored so much back then.

The 5S was the first 64bit iPhone and introduced touch id. The 5C was a repacked iPhone 5 in a bright colored plastic case. Not even close.

Top five reasons to buy iPhone 8:

I lost my iPhone.
My iPhone was stolen.
Broke my iPhone.
Hurricane took my iPhone.
Beer and iPhone, turns out, not compatible.

has anyone actually realized that the iPhone X is more expensive than both the iPad Pro and a MacBook air. i'm not saying people won't still buy it, but wtf?

helps feed the commonly slung: "...but who has the most profitable phone" that we all seem so proud to play at every opportunity.

And you don't become a trillion dollar company without thoroughly emptying wallets.

also, what's the big deal about wireless charging? I honestly don't get it. As it is today, it only charges if it's sitting on the charging pad. That's seems more inconvenient then plugging it in! At least when I plug it in i can still hold it up and use it. Now if there was a larger distance like 10 feet, then we'd be talking

Is "wireless" the only way to charge the 8? Or can it be plugged in? I guess I missed that.

I've had every iteration of the iPhone since the 3GS-this will be the first year that I am not compelled to upgrade.

I have the 6s and my wife has the 7, and I just bought my son an IPad Pro 10.5.

I'm actually more compelled to buy my first Apple Watch Series 3 and HomePod.

Those two items combined will almost equal the cost of the new iPhone 8.

I'll be getting an 8 plus and leave the beta-testing of Face ID and the OLED screen to other people. It's really not about the money, like people are saying, it's not that much of a difference.

And I don't think I could talk myself into not seeing the notch. And, of course, even if Face ID is reliable, it'll always be slower because of the additional step of swiping up to get to the home screen after unlocking it and less comfortable, because you can't use it without looking at the phone.

So for me it's a no-brainer to get the 8 plus and maybe, if both notch and Face ID are gone next year, get the Xs or XI or whatever next year.

Man curious how many sales the X gets! Good luck to you if you have the money, hope you enjoy it!
I'm sold on the I phone X 256GB I just wish that I could get it in gold.

Embrace the notch.

This may be a silly question, but can you preorder online to pick the phone up in store? Or does it have to be delivered.

same here. looking at the apple watch.

thinking the series 2 since i don't really need lte enabled (another bill line item).

Come on guys. I don't have an iPhone 7 and the iPhone 8 will be nice upgrade from the 6s. Waterproofing, true tone display (which I really like on my iPad Pro), wireless charging and almost everything iPhone X has. I'm not convinced that Face ID is so much better and the X is just so ugly. Rounded corners on a display and that top notch? Very unnatural, distracting... I don't know how to describe it, for me it doesn't look right. There is not much space what to improve on a phone... but durability, battery life and charging still have a space to be improved. And I'm glad that Apple might be focusing on those features in the future.

That's right ... but I have a feeling ... sales figure will not be good for any model ... except Apple TV ...

every 2nd year apple made the whole design change, provided more specs to the device BUT kept the price almost same..

This Year it is different... almost similar iPhone 8 and 8P with little bump on camera ... but the price has gone way high...

carrier may not offer good promo on X as they will be too busy getting deals from Apple for 7 and 8 ...
I will buy x or 8P if TMO comes out with good promo .. if not I am happy with my 7 .... I have IOS 11 GM and it works great.....
Before Apple was focusing on making revenue increases from growth. Now they are focusing on revenue through higher margin products. I think it's a natural result of the market becoming mature.

As for sales. I remember predicting the 5S would have terrible sales because it was almost as good as the 5. The reality was the market was not saturated and people with prior models still needed to upgrade. The $50 increase of the 8 is only 2 dollars a month, so I wager a lot of users would not care about the difference

Gotta remember that Face ID is a workaround compromise in order to create a full screen device with no button on the front. Jony Ive's dream of a solid slab of glass is coming to fruition. If the X non-home button design actually ends up being a better iPhone experience for the user, time will tell. And we will certainly hear plenty of opinions about it once people get a X in their hands.

The X design may be a (risky) experiment. That's why there is an 8 also to fall back on if iPhone users rebel.

Samsung most be laughing right now.

S8/S8+ was killer. The Note decimates Apples' offerings this year. Hell, 'Super Retina' - my XZ Premium laughs at that resolution.

Tragic. Tim cook, GTFO.
