iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Production Will Reportedly Drop Nearly 50% When iPhone X Launches

I mean why in the hell would you buy an iPhone 8 when it's about to be outdated (in terms of design).
I love my iPhone 8. The cheaper price is just a bonus to me. I bought it because I love the home button, and a 4.7inch screen is fine for me. If I had an iPhone X, sure I'd get used to the larger screen, and I'd adapt to FaceID, but my personal preferences were/are to use a home button and keep a smaller screen for as long as I can. I'm just not thrilled with having to position the phone the same way every time to unlock it (FaceID)

I bet.

iPhone X is a superior design. It's new, it's fresh. I'm not sure why Apple thinks they can get away with releasing phones with the same design for 4 years in a row. Granted, there's only so much you can do with a rectangle, but still.
sounds great but some people (including me) are turned off by the price - my wife was interested but she said no way at $1000- don't care about installments - Apple is being bailed out in the US by the carriers - that same trick will not work in other countries where people have to come up with a lot more than 1k to get it.

You’re building an illogical argument on supposition and events that haven’t even happened yet, and assigning a personal value to a corporation based on that? Why not just buy an 8 right now and save yourself the tears? Consumerism isn’t hard.

I guess I'm just crazy, CRAZY for wanting to actually see and touch something before I spend $1,400 on it. Silly me. What part of the first part of my comment didn't you get? I'm not going to just settle on an 8 without seeing the X first.

Still an extra £25 a month over what they were paying for the current phone.

Yup, and many are ignoring the fact that they've had to have paid 2 extra monthly installments now as they've had to keep their older phone due to the late release AND they're going to pay an extra 2 extra payments next year if they want the new X(s) on time next year. That's almost an extra $200 if you're going for top line models rather than the measly 64gb...

FWIW, I don’t believe your pricing chart is accurate. The actual price of the iPhone varies across the US but you have just included MSRP, whereas your numbers for other countries include VAT.

I don’t think that’s crazy at all, but wasn’t clear from your post (or I didn’t catch it)

I’ve switched my upgrade cycle to be six months behind new releases now. That way I can do exactly that, as well as give a chance for possibly unseen manufacturing problems to arise. Not to mention skipping the whole preorder and release day mania.

I guess it's the iPhone they should have never announced and released in the first place. Shame because iPhone 8 Plus doesn't seem such a bad model. Apple made a mistake at the keynote. They should have announced the X six weeks later. Also too many SKUs.

Average person doesn't know differences between 5s/SE, 6/6s, 7/8. Apple needs to eliminate SKUs after two years on the website and store to prevent clutter and confusion to the avg Joe. Six SKUs in the market when they should only offer half that for entry-mid-premium. SE2 will add even more confusion.

Sounds really shady to me. This will artificially drive up "demand" for the 8 and almost "force" people to get the X by default - assuming there will be plenty of stock. However someone like me who might have gotten the 8 if there were no X's available is screwed because they artificially cut the stock of the 8. Great business practice. I would get an 8 over a 7 any day, if for no other reason than the wireless charging. I LOATHE Lightening and those damn unreliable cables. This company just keeps getting worse. It's like they want to drive me to Android.
I like your thinking and there could be some truth to it. But we'll never know if that is really the case unless it can proven that Apple could have maintained the production levels of the iPhone 8 whilst manufacturing the iPhone X.

Interesting. Apple has determined that most of those who were going to get the 8/8 Plus have them already and production should focus on the X. The push will be on the X going forward. Seems simple enough. The 8 and 7 will be around to fill the needs of the price point, not impressed, and the wary-to-adopt-new-tech groups.

You can quote the feature list, but if consumers don't see the value in the extra money, they won't buy.
Do consumers overall care about the benefits, if the previous model does the job?
LOL. You could say that about any year's new model, and you'd be wrong. Yes, consumers care quite a bit about things like double storage, faster performance, better cameras, and wireless charging. This is why the 7 and 6S sold like hotcakes even though they had the same design as the 6. The only reason the 8 is struggling a bit is because of the looming X, NOT because it is not a good upgrade from the 7. I bought my wife (a non-techie medical professional) an 8 Plus, she absolutely loves everything about it, and I have major phone jealousy. I, however, am waiting for the X.

This is the wake up call apple needs. You can tell the iPhone X was next years phone pushed to this year. They heavily rely on the same designs and S variants and people instead want to be surprised by new designs and smaller bezels. Lets hope they finally grasp this! I mean they did the whole thinner every year, that they don't understand smaller bezels very year boggles my mind!

While I enjoy my 8 Plus very much, it doesn't compare to a new design and an OLED screen (finally).

So many of us waiting for the X with open arms. Pre-orders and launch day are going to be a mad house.
I keep seeing posts like these. Apart from tech sites I can't see any pent up demand for the iPhone X. More so the general public have already got over the "new iPhone", the iPhone 8, and don't expect to see a new iPhone until next September.

Some people want the noticeably wider screen of the Plus phone and up-to-date tech.

I think there is wisdom to your comments. The SE (inexpensive model), 6s (less expensive more full featured model with headphone jack), 8 (current model) would provide enough variations leading to the X.

I disagree. I see 5+ years of pent-up demand from people who prefer iOS to Android but always wanted a larger, high-res OLED screen with teeny bezels. I see FAR more demand for the X right now than I did for the 7 a year ago, and that thing sold quite well.

Even with the base model iPhone 8, $300 is not a lot cheaper when it comes to an Apple device. Slightly cheaper is the better term. This is coming from someone who pays full retail too.
It might not be a lot for some people but it's still 43% more expensive and that £300 can easily be a dealbreaker.

The iPhone 8 was just a little carrot for us to munch on while waiting for the actual new model.

There are strong rumours that iPhone 7 is outselling iPhone 8. Now just for a moment, assume this is the case ( none of us really know ). If as, you say, the consumer cares about storage, wireless charging etc, this shouldn't be the case. The 8 should be outselling the 7 based upon these new features alone. Again, none of us can prove / disprove the rumours of 7 outselling the 8.

If the previous model does what the consumer wants, at a lower price, the 8 won't sell as well. Its what the consumer thinks as 'good value'. If consumer doesn't regard 8 as good enough value, then they won't buy. Basic economics.

Whether the 8 is struggling due to the X - we shall see very shortly, won't we?

As for your wife - glad she likes it. But your wife is not representative of the entire consumer base.
