For the love of God, please do NOT "embrace the notch," Apple. The lack of symmetry, and awkward screen shape that would result, would not be very Apple-like, IMO. How would that look playing video...or taking photos?

I think putting essential status info up there in white, with a black background, is definitely the way to go and would look super polished and smooth. When the phone is held in landscape mode, like when viewing or recording video, simply black out that strip entirely.

Just my $0.02, but I hope I'm right. :)

I assume it would be like the S8. If that part of the screen gets a hard press/3D Touch, it will act like a home button even when the graphic is not on screen.
Once again....funny now so many comparisons to android. Also Not intuitive. What about people with vision issues. The home button is easy to feel for.

Don't get me wrong I don't really care one way or the other im just trying to discuss how this actually is gonna work.

Back up the claim you made with logic, critical thinking, an engineering/design perspective, etc. or your claim will be dismissed.
OLED display. What does that get you? Blacks that hide the cutout. What do you not put in rounded corners? Display. What is 99% of smartphone content? 16:9 square corner content. What looks like an absolute embarrassment to good design and is completely asymmetrical? A notch in the top which has lit left and right display beside it.

What makes sense for a notch in the top? A black bar with content inside it. I mean they gave you people the Touchbar MacBook Pro as a direct preview of this. What takes far less energy to run on an OLED display? Black pixels which are always off.

Top black bar, bottom black bar. Symmetry and function.

No one thinks about that because they have no obligation to or aren't smart enough. Apple engineers on the other hand, do

Why not put the clock in the top right corner, like it is in macOS?

Also, I'm a little bit concerned about what the phone will look like when you're holding it landscape for games or video.

You're right until you suggested to black the strip out entirely in the camera app. That would be a waste. You'd have the content in it rotate to landscape but it wouldn't be Status Bar elements, it would be buttons in the camera app which would remove obstructions from the display area where you view what the camera is seeing. We are all aware of how much obstruction is over the main display area particularly in the camera app. This could be moved to the top left and right corners and into the home bar at the bottom.

When watching a video then that area would be completely blacked out unless you tap on the screen to bring up controls, in which case it would be filled with buttons such as next video, play/pause, etc

Because battery, alarm, Bluetooth, rotation lock, battery %, do not disturb? Do you guys only think of 1 thing out of the dozens that's go up there?

I like the Analog look better (same source)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I might not upgrade to the 8. Call it smartphone fatigue, or whatever... I'm just not excited about it.

I see a lot of speculation on what indicators are going to be in the black bar.

If space is a more limited factor now because of the notch, why not just let the user choose what to show up there?

If I want the time up there, I'll put the time up there. Same goes with bluetooth, rotation lock, timer, etc. Maybe carrier names won't be displayed anymore? I mean, doesn't everyone know who their carrier is anyway? Maybe it's a branding thing...

There's also nifty ways they could re-purpose indicators. Maybe instead of a battery icon, we'll have a 'charge ring' around the home button. Who knows?

I know you’ve just completely made up that charge ring idea but I instantly love it and will be disappointed if it doesn’t happen!!

I think they should always keep the background of the status bar black no matter what app is running

Yeah, it definitely looks better. Apple could also give users the option to leave it black or allow the app you're using to override it with its own color (white, red, etc.)

love the nav at the bottom! Android has had the back button since day 1 and man, I've been jealous

Having a back button is at the top of the many things that could bring me back to iPhone, but Sammy provides the rest of the things on my list, so why limit myself, right?

I'd love to have the sweet-and-easy Apple integration with my Macs, but that is actually last on my list. I need control and expandability in my device.

It adds the character of looking like a 10 year old designed it.

In your opinion. I kinda like it, other posters here like it, the new iPhone icon discovered in the HomePod software proudly shows it. It's a little like the camera bump – if you can't avoid it, own/embrace it.

Also your "symmetry" theory doesn't really work as the bottom blacked out area would be much bigger than the top black area. To me, the design with the notch showing actually looks (a little) more symmetrical because then the bezels on all 4 sides match up and only the notch "intrudes".

Ether way, I can really see Apple/Jony go both ways. If I had to bet, I'd think it's slightly more probable that the top and bottom will be blacked out most of the time, but I'm absolutely not sure. Would be fun if the user had a choice!

I like the mockups where they don't hide the notch... perhaps they could make the battery/cell-signal meters vertical and move them all over to one side, while displaying date/time on the other.

I'm sure Apple wouldn't make the home button look literally like the icon for the Clock app. Not even post-iOS7-Apple.

It's probably a ring like the picture below when in use (Second image), I am sure when touchID is included it will be similar like the icon which shows up when downloading/buying from the Appstore, or similar to first image below.

It's a lot easier in practice than it sounds when I explain it. The button is always in the same place, whether you can see it or not. Apple is king of accessibility, so I would be willing to bet they'll have a way to keep it there at all times.

Really? that's the funniest thing I've read all this week. You have a mobile device and are worried they can't find the home button? What about all the icons, text, ... they are supposed to be reading. If they can't find a home button they sure, as heck, can't see anything else the screen is displaying.

What a good one!

Because of the lack of Touch ID most likely I’ll upgrade to the iPhone 7s
Face palm, ugh. Why would Apple get rid of something that is needed for Apple Pay. When I pay for something, I just want to grab my phone out of my pocket and tap to pay. I don't want to look like I'm taking a selfie! Could you imagine... how stupid that would look, HA!

The notch gives it a distinctive look. It will also be recognizable in icon form, as all previous models have been.

I just don't see the sense in removing Touch ID. My guess, it's going to be in the sleep/wake button.
