If the third option is the one they go for it will be horrendous! It might work in this situation but what happens when you're playing a full-screen movie or looking at photos. Will the notch just eat into the footage/photos? Or will they then add the black bar on the screen so it doesn't interfere?

Although I'm hoping the notch will be integrated into an always-on black screen, I fear they're going for the third option after seeing the icon released with the HomePod firmware. If this happens, then the design department should hang their heads in shame. If I didn't love iOS I would totally go for the Samsung S8. Now that is a stylish looking device.

The agreement might be rewritten but thousands of banks and credit unions and retailers would all have to agree to it. It took years for them to all agree to Touch ID and Apple still only has about 50% penetration now.

Well - Apple watch has no touch ID and it is accepted - from the bank POV what they want is tokenization and end user validation which the "Face ID" will do with a higher degree than Touch ID.

I am wondering why we have not seen any leaks of the iPhone 7s and only the "iPhone 8"

There have been some 7s leaks, but the reason the 7s has not had more leaks over the OLED model, is because the 7s is not expected to physically change all that much over the current iPhone 7 form factor.

The more and more I see my regret for waiting for this version grows. I really think iPhone 7 is the way to go. This thing is going to have a ton of bugs and I am not crazy about the projections as to what the UI would look like. It really isn't a big shift in design - they swapped out the physical for digital home button and narrowed the bezels. I don't know...I am not liking it...

My only issue with the “iPhone 8” is the loss of the home button.
I’ve grown to love it!
All of it’s many features such as Touch ID, reachability, multitasking, Siri and of course Home! Will they be able to encorparate all these features successfully in a software home button?

If it's such a struggle to accommodate the notch in the UI, maybe the notch just isn't a good idea?

The more I think about it, the more I agree. There are a lot of scenarios where it would just be out of place. Better to just have a black strip at the top and a black UI.

Edit [Correction]:- While those are some cool mockups but here is a mockup which looks much better in my opinion. i like the way how that camera cutout blends in with display even with white front.
That is really beautiful and reminiscent of the Apple Watch design. I could totally see this happening.

How would it work in landscape mode, there’ll be a random notch at the ‘side’ of your screen.
They would need to have a black strip to make it look clean.

While these concepts look good....I fail to see the point in making a larger screen if a portion of it will constantly have a home button on it. What if you're watching a video and want to go home?

On Android, you tap the screen and then the bottom / side menu options show up.

Most people who hold their phone one-handed rest it on their pinky. Well, at least in my case, my pink naturally rests right below where the back button would be, making it weird to tap....

Zillions of Android users do it. As you said, you'll get used to it, if that's what they implement.

I don't take any of these alternate purchasing "threats" seriously at all. None of these people have heard Apple's side of the story yet and as we all know, Apple is the master of setting the stage and telling the story to make you want their latest and best product offering. The fact is that after their iPhone event and presentation, all of these Touch ID faithful folks will want the iPhone 8 even if it's Facial ID only. The problem is that Apple cannot possibly meet the demand so they will end up purchasing the 7s and pretend that it's what they wanted all along.
Nope. We will preorder precisely the model of our dreams and end up in a big fat queue and groan endlessly about it for months on various forum threads. Been there, done that when I joined this forum while in an IPhone 6 Plus queue for AT&T. :D

I'm actually looking forward to it. I'm so strange.

love the nav at the bottom! Android has had the back button since day 1 and man, I've been jealous

One of the things I love about the iPhone is the simplicity of it just having one button. I don’t like the back button and whatever the other button is on androids, be them hardware or software.

Someone at Apple is either pointing at these mockups and just laughing

Or their like "DAMN NO"

Oh god. Face palm.

It's really really simple actually: the notch is a part of a black bar at the top of the device. Inside the left and right portions of that black bar you get contextual info you otherwise would not have been able to get. So why exactly would more contextual info be bad? It's factually better.

There are plenty of iPhones with white bezels, how would you know if the new one will not be white?
I know because there is a notch. I mean it is painfully obvious what Apple is doing here, and it eludes so many people...
