I personally don't mind the mockup with the black function area. True it looks like a regular iPhone with bezels but at least the area now serves a function so it isn't completely useless.

EMBRACE THE NOTCH

It will be quite interesting how Apple will handle this. Blacking out the top and bottom areas will look cleaner and will have usability advantages as the white text on OLED black UI elements will/would look super crisp and eminently glanceable. On the other hand, not blacking those areas out makes the screen look much bigger and is a more "spectacular" design. Also, the visible notch gives the display a specific visiual identity vs. a normal/bland rectangular display with a small black bezel; it adds "character".

Oh god. Face palm.

It's really really simple actually: the notch is a part of a black bar at the top of the device. Inside the left and right portions of that black bar you get contextual info you otherwise would not have been able to get. So why exactly would more contextual info be bad? It's factually better.

I know because there is a notch. I mean it is painfully obvious what Apple is doing here, and it eludes so many people...

Except all these concepts are removing info like the clock and room for status icons. Nothing is being gained.

That's how it will be so get used to it
I don't know why you'd make that assertion without citing a source. Even if you're right, it's just a guess.

I can just respond with the equally vapid:
That's not how it will be, so I don't need to get used to it.

It adds the character of looking like a 10 year old designed it.

I would be absolutely astounded if Apple used that area outside of a black Touchbar type background.

It does not have a white bezel. Obviously.

I personally do not like the white bezels, notch or otherwise.

But, I wouldn't say it is obvious that Apple is not including white bezels, or anything else with the new iPhone.

With all the recent conflicting rumors, I wouldn't say anything is obvious at this point. Or maybe you have some inside info?

While these concepts look good....I fail to see the point in making a larger screen if a portion of it will constantly have a home button on it. What if you're watching a video and want to go home?
I assume it would be like the S8. If that part of the screen gets a hard press/3D Touch, it will act like a home button even when the graphic is not on screen.

The only inside info I have is logic. We all know apple will have a black bar at the top and a symmetrical one at the bottom.

It's just logic. Look at it from a critical thinking, engineering and design perspective

How would it work in landscape mode, there’ll be a random notch at the ‘side’ of your screen.
They would need to have a black strip to make it look clean.

That's just it. I think people aren't taking into account some of the most obvious types of media shown on a mobile phone screen. Virtually all content is formatted to be 16:9 in rectangular form with 90 degree corners. It just makes sense the notch would be masked as a black bar.

I think we'll end up with something akin to mockup #4 (2nd picture, right side), but with simulated 90 degree corners along the top (similar to #2), not rounded.

Lack of Touch ID would require Apple to rewrite their Apple Pay agreement, which means that every retailer and every bank would have to agree to the new one. Remember how long it took for some to get on Apple Pay in the first place? It'd be a huge problem for millions of users while we waited for all of them to accept such a change.

I just don't see them completely leaving Touch ID, especially considering they just added it to the MBP. If they were transitioning away from it to a camera-based system, why put in the work to add it to the MBP, only to remove it and have to integrate the new system a year later?

I don't use Apple Pay since I am in India but can I not pay using my screen password rather than Touch ID. If that is the case then the interface doesn't matter. The agreement might be about the secure token implantation rather than the interface. I am not an expert on this but just a thought.

I like the Analog look better (same source)

No, we don't.
Well.....some of us

I think they meant to leak that stuff to hold us over, and then boom at the event
Nobody just leaks a whole lot of stuff like that on accident

I like the notch, design-wise. It looks like something I would have tried.

But... that's an awful lot of space taken away from the top bar. In addition to clock, where does "Bluetooth - Alarm - Location Services - Do Not Disturb - Etc." go, when I have that combo in play?

I see a lot of speculation on what indicators are going to be in the black bar.

If space is a more limited factor now because of the notch, why not just let the user choose what to show up there?

If I want the time up there, I'll put the time up there. Same goes with bluetooth, rotation lock, timer, etc. Maybe carrier names won't be displayed anymore? I mean, doesn't everyone know who their carrier is anyway? Maybe it's a branding thing...

There's also nifty ways they could re-purpose indicators. Maybe instead of a battery icon, we'll have a 'charge ring' around the home button. Who knows?

On Android, you tap the screen and then the bottom / side menu options show up.

Zillions of Android users do it. As you said, you'll get used to it, if that's what they implement.
The iPhone seems to be inching closer and closer to being android......interesting.
