Apple may call the 2017 iPhone 8, rumored to be announced alongside the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus at a September event, the "iPhone Edition," according to a new report from Japanese website Mac Otakara. The name would reportedly signal that the phone is a higher end model, similar to how Apple names the Apple Watch Edition. The "Edition" moniker lines up with reports that the model could cost upwards of $1,000.

The report goes on to note that Apple is currently testing multiple prototypes alongside the iPhone 8. The prototypes experiment with screen technology and materials, with some prototypes using an LCD display while others use AMOLED. The prototypes are also in testing with and without home buttons. Further, Apple is using them to test glass, aluminum and white ceramic chassis.

Apple is trying to gauge which materials and technologies they can procure at mass scale for production, according to Mac Otakara. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Nikkei and the Wall Street Journal have reported the iPhone 8 will feature an OLED screen, while the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch lower-end models will sport LCD displays.

Mac Okatara says the only features Apple is reportedly certain of are a 5-inch display, wireless charging and dual cameras. The 5-inch display Mac Otakara is referring to is the usable space on the display. The iPhone 8 is expected to utilize an edge-to-edge display that puts a 5.8-inch display in a handset roughly the size of a 4.7-inch iPhone. 5.15 inches of the 5.8-inch display will be usable. The difference will be used for a wide row of virtual buttons.

The Cupertino company is also expected to announce a more standard 4.7-inch iPhone 7s and 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus alongside the "iPhone Edition." According to Mac Otakara, while those two models are expected to launch in September, the "iPhone Edition" may not launch until well after that.

It had better come in gold like the original Apple Watch Edition or it's a no buy for me.

;)

Edition will be the name of something exterior premium. Like ceramic or gold or something. But the internals and design will be the same. Just like the watch
LOL will they also charge more for special edition dumb
Just keep on destroying those myths of being an elitist company Apple....
LOL since when is a 4 year old Mac Pro without a decent monitor and quality router option an elitist way of doing things. They are lost. 100% focus on this. None on that. "Should we update the computers Tim? Next year. We need to test these new iPhone colors. That's more important right now".

This is what I posted in a thread earlier:

The iPhone 8 is going to come in 3 models:
- curved glass front and back with a steel frame
- Ceramic white back, with a curved glass front
- Improved jet black finish, with a curved glass front
- 4 GBs of RAM
- A11x Fusion Processor
- 128 to 256 GBs of storage
- All will cost $1,000

iPhone 7s
- Similar chassis to the iPhone 7
- Primary colors: Black, Silver, Gold and Rose Gold
- 2 to 3 GBs of RAM
- A11 Fusion Processor
- Max storage 32 to 256 GBs
- 650 to 950

We really should not over think this though. 2016 was 10 years since the MacBook Pro, although significantly thinner, its not that different from the 2012 introduction of the Retina MacBook Pro. This would suggest the iPhone will follow a similar pattern. The last significant update was the 2014 iPhone 6. If this is something to go by, the iPhone 7s and 8 will probably look just like their previous revisions, probably using newer materials and finish just to give it that feel of difference.

The iPhone Jet Black and Black themselves do look slightly different from the 6s. So, I assume, this years update will be subtle but noticeable.

I think the term you are looking for here is "aspirational". Apple products have never been cheap, and not everyone will be able to afford them (as evidenced by their comparatively low market share).

Yet there is no shortage of people willing to pay for Apple products, because there are some things the rest of the competition just can't offer.

People have known this since day one, so I don't see why people are suddenly acting all shocked and raising a stink over it.

No doubt this iPhone Edition will be glorious and sell like hot cakes, but I think it's unfortunate for the customer that this is how Apple means to catch up to the competition -- a third, even higher and more expensive tier iPhone. This is how we're going to "celebrate" the tenth anniversary iPhone, by further fragmenting features between the models.

The problem with your theory is the frequency of design refreshes on one line to the other. The iPhone has had a major redesign at least every other year before the iPhone 6-7. Whereas the Macbook Pro has more or less stayed the same for 10 years like you mentioned. Though I agree with you in that the phone will merge closer to the cycles had by the mac.

Oh look, Apple found a way to wring out another level of profits and 'exclusivity' from their phone models. We should have seen this coming with the iPad Pro.

...Perhaps I'll wait until the tech trickles down from the 'Edition' to the next iPhone SE.

*prays*

Not surprised. Im sure they will make a premium model now as it was shown already with apple watch or the MacBook pro the touch bar and non touch bar.

I predict that it'll be an iPhone 7s and 7s Plus and + their exclusive one something like "iPhone Edition"(agree with rumors) - and definitely looking at $1500+ price range.

To me personally, it will be disappointing, they'll be differentiating and people will be going crazy with who has a better one.

Just a prediction.

iPhone 8, I am ok with that.
iPhone X, I understand, I would think that's pretty cool.
iPhone Edition, bit long, cool .. new names. Yeah I am down for it.

Either way, I am fine.

I think Apple wants to still show that they're on a forefront of tech, but are not willing to make the price competitive. Similar to this, the iPad Pro should never have been more expensive or unneccessarily split from the regular iPad line just because after 4 years it got better screen tech and a keyboard port.

They'll call it maturing the product line (hey, we have Macbooks and Macbook Pros and we sell a fraction of those compared to our iOS lines!)

However, it's becoming increasinly obvious that it's just greed when they introduce a more expensive model that arbitrarily supresses the advancement of the normal priced version, simply making it a poorer value option.

Wait, have you not heard about all the patents for touch ID in the display, oled displays, wireless charging.... none of these would be possible with the current design.
I can bet almost everything will be different with this new iPhone.
The next major iPhone WILL be a major redesign. That's for certain.
