Getting reports that the wireless charging capability might be limited to only Apple chargers via software restrictions. This is either because Apple doesn't trust 3rd party wireless chargers or just a plain old money grab. I go with the latter.

So, catching up with the competition means raising the price in apple-land ?

The closest competitor is Samsung, with prices not much more affordable. I am using Galaxy S8 (standard size) and while I really like it,after months of use I have started to be reminded why I love Apple products so much.

The s8 is 600 euros Right now , probably 400-500 euros cheaper than what the iPhone will be and it was 700 euros when it was released , mind to share with us why you don't like it so much anymore ? I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of my 7 plus for it , it's touchwiz isn't it ? Ugh , why doesn't Samsung just get it together and hire some proper developers that optimize their software ?

I bought mine for £670 when it was launched, 32Gb version. It seems to got slower and experiencing more app crashes. If I have to be honest, display is what it got me sold to it.

With Apple, I find it's often a mix of the two. Apple-certified peripherals do tend to be of a higher quality, but at the same, they also cost more and there is no denying that Apple often profits handsomely from this arrangement.

you don't make sense at all iPhone se didn't even come out few years ago and while they sell well, represent small user base compare to other models
same as mac mini , heck they are not even updating them on regular basis

i can agree on iPod shuffle that did get many ppl start their first iPod, but that being said, iPod classic and iPod nano were already EXTREMELY popular when they first get out

over all i really doubt how many really get into the apple word via the three product you mentioned. do they sell well? SURE but in terms of apple standard, it was not that impactful

I think there is a big difference in price. The note 8 tops out at £870 here in the UK, whereas the iphone 8 is likely to start at £1,000 for the same amount of storage (64GB). 256GB and 512GB are likely to be £100 and £200 more respectively. Also I wouldn't say Apple are catching up based on the leaked iphone 8 rumours, merely not lagging behind. I do love Apple and I will be keeping my 7 plus and all my other Apple devices. Just not falling for the hyperbole (cash cow) that is the iphone 8.

I wonder how they want to justify this high price? I mean seriously, we have 2017 and smartphones are nothing special anymore.

What can the iPhone 8 do, that justifies 400 dollars price jump compared to a 7s?

I highly doubt they gonna find enough buyers for this model to make it become a success.

Daring Fireball's John Gruber believes Chen's source indicates the iPhone 8 will indeed start at $999, with a higher storage capacity model at $1099 and maybe another at $1199. Based on alleged leaks earlier this week, these price points could correspond with 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB, respectively.
I don't see any chance that they'll charge only 100 more to go from 256->512gb. That seems like wishful thinking. To do the same on a macbook is a 200 dollar upgrade, why would it be cheaper in a more constrained footprint? More likely its 64, 128 and 256gb options. If a 512gb option exists it will be at least 200 more than a 256gb option.

For decent storage as you put it the iPhone 8 is going to cost way more than $1,000. That's only for the base model (64 GB). So you can imagine the next tier will be $100 more.

No doubt. So, it's 200 bucks more. That's not cheap, but it's hardly a shocker.

Galaxy S8 is $725 retail and can be had for quite a bit less. Rumored iPhone 8 with roughly the same specs is $999 which is a 38% price premium. I think $275 less is quite a bit more affordable. I'll agree the iPhone will likely be the better overall choice but that is a pretty hefty Apple Tax for a directly competitive phone.

I wouldn't pay a 1000 dollars for a device with no S pen, no memory expansion, no 6 GB ram, and a older generation of amoled screen technology. Apple is bamboozling their fanbase.

And guess what? We don’t need to. It’s our money, it’s ours to spend as we deem fit, and we will vote with our wallets as to what we believe the best smartphone for us is.
You should vote with your brain, not with your wallet.

Who knows? Maybe one day you'll be in a situation where you need those 1000$ for something really vital and you don't have it and then you'll understand how crazy it was to spend such quantity in a phone...

Who knows. Maybe the world will all just suddenly end one day and render this whole argument moot as well.

Is the next iPhone expensive? Maybe. Perhaps. We will know for sure once Apple officially announces the pricing tiers, though if we look at past pricing trends, the higher storage tiers tend to make the more expensive models seem more reasonably priced in comparison.

Of course, I may well change my tune if the iPhone 8 model doesn't seem like a good enough upgrade alongside the 7s.

Years ago, I made the conscious decision to embrace the Apple ecosystem in its entirety. I am aware of the drawbacks of limiting myself to one vendor for the majority of my hardware and software needs, but I personally feel that the benefits of an integrated ecosystem far outweigh the drawbacks (for me) and I will say that I have been a very happy and satisfied Apple user thus far.

And I will gladly pay to stay in this integrated platform for as long as I can. There are just some things only the devil can offer.

Objectively, there's just NO reason at all for a phone to cost 1000$.

Is it made of gold?

It's just too much. At some point we as customers must say NO.

If we don't say NO they will keep increasing the prices!

Would you be okay to pay 3000$ for a laptop? Or 1000$ for a smartwatch? Or 2000$ for a tablet?

Maybe one day it'll happen. And you know why? Because we as customers never stopped it.

That's because you're bad with your money. Not because a 1000 dollar phone makes any sense.
Sure, I can afford it. What’s wrong with that? That doesn’t distract from the fact that I use my mobile for all kinds of purposes everyday, and calculated per minute of use actually is way cheaper than many other commodities I use. Such as car, food, cinema tickets etc.

Are you really saying that a 1000$ phone is cheaper than food and cinema tickets?

Hello?

Ultimately depends on what I get out of it.

The Apple Watch Edition does cost $1k. As does a maxed out version of the MBP. An iPad Pro with 4g capability and the accompanying accessories comes pretty close to the $2k mark.

Maybe it will happen one day. And when the day comes that I finally decide that Apple products cost too much, then I simply won't buy them.

To me, it's that straightforward.

Simply, either people will pay that much or not buy it.

The sad thing is people will still buy it.

They must not understand that if they don't buy it then Apple loses (and not us, the customers) and would be forced to lower the prices going forward, therefore they (the customers) would win.

In the end, the masses just keep doing it wrong.

I understand what you say, and if a million customers would skip the preorder next month Apple would know it, and would be forced to lower prices.
But how do you convince a million not to buy the iPhone the very week is launched to the market?
You can't reach such a huge number of people via the internet and say "look, if you wait to buy the new iPhone they're going to lower the price". Even if you convinced all the guys reading macrumors it wouldn't make a difference.

When iPhone 7 was launched we all knew it was basically the same phone for the third year in a row, some folks in this forum predicted Apple would sell less phones and we all know how it turned out.
I skipped iPhone 7 and I may wait until 2018 to buy a new iPhone, but eventually I'll do it and I'm afraid I'll have to pay almost $1000 (at least in my country). I don't think they'll lower the price anytime soon
