But almost everyone buys a phone a year.

I think most do not. Most wait until their contract has expired to upgrade for free which is after 24 months in the U.K. Even those who do sim only deals usually get a few years usage out of their phones before buying a new one. It's only geeks and tech enthusiast who upgrade yearly or more.

I think this year could be different tho, with the iPhone 8 being a change from the norm and being a BIG upgrade a lot of people will want to upgrade. Personally it's the only reason i'm upgrading this year otherwise i would stick with my iPhone 7 Plus, but if there is going to be this BIG upgrade with an OLED screen, advanced 3D facial recognition and so on then yea i will upgrade, that's why personally the 7s doesn't really appeal to me (from the rumours we have heard so far).

Depends on how long you keep it, what is insane is to buy a new phone every year.

Yes I suppose if you are going to keep it for 2-3 years but for only a year it's too much imo.

I think on the surface for me at least a smartphone is worth £1,000 because it's my main computer. I have a MacBook and an iPad but I use my phone everyday and for 95% of tasks. So when I take into account the functionality it's easily worth £1,000. The problem arises when you already have a perfectly working phone then it isn't worth £1,000 to upgrade. If I didn't have a phone at all then I wouldn't hesitate to spend £1,000. However when I already own a 7 plus I can't really justify spending £1,100+ assuming it costs £100 to move up from 64GB.

These prices man. It doesn't even make sense. Like, at all. $1000 for a bloody smartphone, come on.
With the value of the pound plummeting I'm expecting something more akin to dollar pound parity. The 8 will be very very expensive. With the 7s not looking like much more than a spec upgrade anyone with a 6s and due a 24 month upgrade might look at some really cheap 7/7plus deals around right now.

I think this iphone 7 plus that I'm using right now will be my very last one, it costed me 900 euros which is/was insane , I won't pay more than that I'm sorry apple, how much will this device cost in europe? The red iphone 7 plus already costs 1009 euros, no thanks. I think I will keep it until I find something worthy next year, If the HTC U11 (in red) would have onscreen buttons and thin bezels I would jump all over it , I love how the s8 looks but samsung's software is so heavy and full of lag.

On a side note I personally I'm insulted that apple is selling a phone with a 720p screen in 2017 and charging 760 euros for it, totally unacceptable .

Meanwhile I can get a buttery smooth stock android, 8 GB RAM + 128 GB OnePlus 5 for half of the iPhone 8 cost, which is probably what I am going to go with if Apple doesn't come to their senses.

Yes the oneplus 5 is very fast and smooth but the screen is awful, a total deal breaker you can see the pixels everywhere, and the camera is bad and the phone itself it's still pretty big (like the iphone plus).

That's also my problem. Because of brexit prices are going to be even more atrocious for us in the UK.

From $649 to sub $999!! Why?!!
So greedy if true.
I haven't heard of any earth shattering technologies being introduced from what was rumoured so far:
- Wireless charging existed on competitors phones since my daughter was born (she's over 2 years old now btw).
- Reduced bezel.. existed with competitor phones a while ago and theirs is even curved beyond the edge! so no big deal here either
- No buttons in the front. So? should cost less not more
- Front/ back camera.. ok, this is an increased cost cause it sounds like to be more sophisticated camera but at $350 increase sounds too excessive frankly

Look, since iPhone 6 Apple didn't introduce a major change in their phone line.. now as it sounds like they will finally do, they plan to introduce a price hike with it which really takes all the excitement from it as well.

They did the same recently on other products - eg. introducing what they called "ipad pro" and hikes the prices by at least $100 :)

At Steve Job days, apple did on occasions put prices up on line refresh but nothing at this scale. Maybe i need to wake up and stop dwelling about SJ era, this company is not the same anymore.. end of.

To be honest, I already paid about 1000€ for the iPhone 5. But it was maxed out (64GB) including Apple care... 1000 € seem to be a magic red line I have troubles to cross when buying a phone. This is going to be a very capable device but price points seem to be set as pure premium marketing strategy to me. Like almost every "Pro" Apple device today, the "iPhone Pro" will just be ridiculously overpriced. In conclusion: I hate how apple isn't "Pro" in its entire lineup for everyone anymore...

You people seem to think Apple is constantly supplying us with old technology because another company may have introduced it first. Apple takes their time until they can have the hardware fined tuned to their spec. Plain and simple. This has been explained over and over by Apple as well as other tech sites out there. It is hard to introduce a brand new hardware technology across all devices because they either cannot meet the demand or they haven’t scaled the tech to suit that device yet. Even with oled displays, I’ve read many reports that Samsung could not supply, themselves, others and Apple because Apple quantities will be far too much. The iMac pro that is due to be released in December, why December? The hardware needed for it is not yet available. The Home Pod? Software is not ready. I could go on and on...

Apple goal is to release amazing devices people would want and enjoy, and make money. It makes 0 sense from a business stand point to hold back on technology that they have maturely developed and ready to ship, only to sell at a later date. If Apple has not released it, it’s simply because they cannot without negative consequences.

This is BS. Apple is constantly giving us old specs. Understand some of their products they want to perfect it. But adding ram or storage has been tried and tested. For example, why was the iPhone 6 plus released with only 1gb ram while other manufacturers at the time were giving phablets a minimum of 2gb ram? It wouldn't have hurt them to add 2gb ram. The iPhone 6 was sluggish because of it.

And apple keeping the 16gb entry storages as long as they did was downright shameful.

Don't even get me started on Apple coming out with their first OLED iPhone in 2017.

And why apple hasn't gotten rid of those chunky bezels until now? You can find cheapo android phones with slimmer bezels than on the iPhone.

And then MacBooks they released in 2016 that shipped with skylake instead of Kabylake. And for no reason.

People aren't being unreasonable in saying apple puts old technology in their products.

It's a very valid complaint since we're paying premium price.

The thing we need to ask ourselves is, IF Apple do indeed launch three new iPhones next month, then what exactly will they do next year?
If some of us hold onto our wallets, will Apple bring this tech to its cheaper models? I mean they could reduce the iPhone 8 screen to say 5.2" to 5.5" and call it the standard model. So long as it has the dual camera in it.

Or will they increase prices massively and have the iPhone range, bar the SE model, start from £800 or £850 and up to say £1300?
The iPhone 8 cameras have got to bring it, the samples I've seen from the Note 8 are absolutely stunning.

I never buy Apple's computers now for this reason. Here I am on Ryzen+ Vega and they still haven't bothered to update their lineup.

The iPhone 6 was the worst iPhone I ever owned. Just one upgrade past iOS 8 and it started showing lags in every minor task. Apple really should give at least the 6 Plus owners, a new 6s Plus because the 6 Plus is downright unusable due to low RAM.

If its like the iPad,no they wont. The ProMotion display,TrueTone, stereo speakers on both sides never trickled down to the 499 price point like they used to for years. Basically we have to spend 600 bucks for upgrades every couple of years when we could earlier do so at 499.

The iPhone Pro gets all the attention from hereon in. Expect the lower end lineup to stagnate like the iPad.

The Apple brand has always been geared to wealthy customers. If a person doesn't have the money for Apple stuff there's a dozen other companies offering a similar and in some cases better product for less.

I see more minimum wage people carrying new phones than I do so called wealthy people.

The days of the iPhone being an aspirational luxury item are long gone.

They are trading on their name alone now.

It isn't plummeting, it has actually gone back up in value, but Apple has already increased prices in the U.K. And we already have an almost 1 dollar to 1 pound price. Either way, if it's priced a £1000 Plus, this is Apple going nuts with the pricing. They'll no doubt make an excuse if yields or something, well then why should your customer pay for your mistakes and incapability to manufacture parts?

No it hasn't, never has. It's been geared to designers and media outlets. The iPhone is everywhere in the UK used by all people, classes and ages, it is false self importance really to proclaim only the rich buy Apple products...

The rich buy a watch with hand made mechanisms from Switzerland, not an Apple Watch with a gold case and a mechanism made in a Chinese sweat factory by robots and lines of people, and that same mechanism is put in a $300 Watch as a $13000 watch.

Apple know that there are people who will buy anything with an Apple logo on it at any price.

This is true. Apple and to a lesser extent Samsung are the only manufacturers who could get away with this price. Samsung's $930 Note is a value buy compared to the iPhone 8 lol

comparing actual models (from Autumn Last Year):
(prices from google shopping)

Xiaomi Mi Mix 6GB RAM and 256GB storage - price £423 (top end)
screen 6.4 inches, 1080 x 2040 pixels
Non-removable Li-Ion 4400 mAh battery

iPhone 7 2GB RAM 32GB storage - price £579 (cheapest)
screen 4.7 inches, 750 x 1334 pixels
Non-removable Li-Ion 1960 mAh battery

iPhone 7 Plus 3GB RAM 256GB storage - price £880 (top end)
screen 5.5 inches, 1080 x 1920 pixels
Non-removable Li-Ion 2900 mAh battery

iPhone's are overpriced with outdated specs

To an extent yes, however when it comes to the mass market we will have to see. Because when people walk into a phone shop, the new iPhone will be the most expensive one there by a cinsiderable margin! If it's at this high price it will be interesting to see how the market reacts.

I don't see why not?

Apple's shrinking market share will not be because they are selling fewer iPhones, but because the competition is flooding the market with tons of cheaper devices. Even with 14% market share or less, it's still hundreds of millions of iOS devices in circulation. More than enough for Apple to sustain its own ecosystem.

I think you will find that Android's market share means very little in the greater scheme of things.
Hi!

I respect your point of view, but there's a 'holly trinity' of a healthy market:
1. Revenue: apple has that in the bag
2. Volume: Apple is good here too
3. Market Share: and that's where Apple is falling short

What you said is true, the category of smartphones has expanded, but if Apple's market share doesn't follow, Or exceed, the expansion rate that's a problem.

One of the companies in this space laid off hundred of employees and restructured in a year their revenue was great, volume was fantastic, but market share growth was 5%. Why? Category growth that year was 9%

Not to mention that Apple probably made a lot of money/spent far less on design and manufacturing over the past 3 years, since no changes were really made to the design or hardware of the phones. In my mind, that should cancel out any increase in cost this year for them. Of course, I know that they aren’t going to accept a lower profit margin for each phone. This is a huge weakness in publicly traded companies, in my opinion. Rather than doing what’s best for the customer, they do what’s best for shareholders and stock prices. The two don’t always line up. If customers aren’t your top priority, I don’t see how your stock value doesn’t eventually suffer.

At least Samsung have been pretty decent with brexit and not taken advantage of it. Apple on the order hand are working on a $1 to £1 ratio so yeah. I'm expecting it to start at £1,000 and that's only for 64GB. They will try and justify it by

a) Marketing the phone as a premium/pro device

b) offering the 7/7S plus at the same price points as last year
[doublepost=1503835924][/doublepost]

Exactly. Those whinging about the price of the note 8 should just wait until the iPhone 8 comes out. Then they will see pure greed at work.

To put things into perspective, I can get a 512GB iPad Pro 12.9, a gaming laptop with a GTX 1080 using a SSD, a GTX Titan XP, a 144hz premium 4K monitor for the same price of a 64 GB iPhone Pro. That's how ridiculous this is.
