Its far too soon to completely ditch touchID and only leave us with ancient passcode and face recognition. Talk about not working. Apple isn't the type to adopt this tech this early. Also doubt they are even removing the home button after they just made it taptic
If anything, the move to Taptic indicated the home button will be removed. But this doesn't mean an assistive touch implementation like some may think, nor does it mean they'll move everything to screen genpsturest/swipes.

Pretty sure credit card processing won't accept facial recognition over a fingerprint ATM. It has already taken forever to get emv here in the US and the roll-out STILL isn't complete, I thought the deadline was October 2016 I'm calling a big fat NOPE on this report.

I'm not sure this would be an improvement. With Touch ID I can have my phone unlocked and ready to use before it's out of my pocket.

With a face or iris scanner it's got to be pointed at my face before it can even begin unlocking. Given how fast Touch ID now is, face/iris scanning sounds like a big step backwards, even if it works comparably quickly.

Scanner in my 950XL, had in my Note 7. It's aggravating to use. Fingerprint is loads faster and easier. Y'all will see.

Yes I know "Apple will do it better" but the concept itself is pretty janky IMO.

Kinda hard to compare old technology that MS or Samsung used to what Apple might introduce! I don't think Apple would release a half a$$ed version. Sounds fishy that they are just going to drop the TouchID as well. All rumors!

So I'm gonna have to scan my face whenever I use Apple Pay or try to access my phone? How annoying. Using my finger is so much quicker & less cumbersome.

I think Touch ID will be embedded on the display like with Touchbar and this will be an extra security layer.

Lemme guess you did not retrain your 950 Iris scanner more than once in different angles and light conditions, after training its every bit as good as fingerprint. Yes it works in the DARK, problem area is extremely bright light

Janky? I don't call 4-5x more secure janky
I highly doubt apl will do a "Lazer facial scan" it'll be Iris scan if it is that will be an upgrade over Touch ID... can use with gloves , dirty hands even sunglasses...and be much more secure

Clearly he is clueless. I think this is his thought process:

Rumors about facial recognition + Rumors about the removal of the home button = Removal of Touch ID (obvious!)

So what's gonna happen to Apple Pay? Can imagine people taking "selfies" at tills in order to pay their purchases...

Apple can have the 3D laser read the thumb/finger print and it will be pseudo TouchID. You will just place you print on the laser component.

Yeah no.
With a function area why wouldn't the Touch ID reside there?

It may be an additional safeguard, but I do not see Touch ID going anywhere in the foreseeable future.

The new 7s will have a function bar just as the supposed 8 instead of a home button, and it will have that same Touch ID functionality.

Apple's widely expected 5.8-inch iPhone with an edge-to-edge OLED display will feature a front-facing 3D laser scanner for facial recognition, corroborating previous rumors, according to JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall.

Hall said the scanner will replace Touch ID on the so-called iPhone 8, as Apple plans to remove the Home button to allow for the edge-to-edge display. His research note claims the so-called iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus could also have a 3D laser scanner based on increased volume of the module within Apple's supply chain.

The scanner is said to add $10 to $15 per module to the iPhone 8's bill of materials, which coupled with the OLED display, glass casing, and other increased production costs, could make its retail price up to $100 more expensive than it would be without those features, if Apple looks to maintain a similar profit margin.

The increased costs are in line with a recent report claiming the iPhone 8 could cost upwards of $1,000 in the United States.

Hall believes the switch to facial recognition will help alleviate consumer frustration when Touch ID does not work under wet conditions. He added that facial recognition will potentially be more secure than Touch ID, which could increase Apple Pay adoption among banks and merchants.

The research note said the 3D laser scanner could eventually be used for other purposes, such as augmented reality, but likely not until 2018 at the earliest. He also believes that Apple is likely to eventually open up a 3D scanning API to developers, who could use it to do "everything from determining your shoe size for online orders to helping make sure you are properly fitted on your bike."

Hall expects a strong iPhone 8 replacement cycle later this year, and he said an announcement about the product is possible as early as WWDC 2017, which kicks off June 5. Apple has not made any iPhone hardware announcements at WWDC since 2010, so treat this claim with a proverbial grain of salt for now.

If Apple is so quick to abandon technologies that they invent (in this case, TouchID), then why don't they abandon dumb designs like the 2013 Mac Pro and finally release a new Mac Pro tower? That would be amazing. :)
