Why big concern with Apple if the iPhone 8 cost $1,000 - $1, 200 , When they sold the Apple watch for Gold Edition for $15,000! and the Series 2 watch is $1,500 and it just lays on your wrist as an accessory. I would mind paying more for the iPhone 8 if it was really worth it!

So I'm gonna have to scan my face whenever I use Apple Pay or try to access my phone? How annoying. Using my finger is so much quicker & less cumbersome.

It'll be like when I purchase something from Windows Store.... Click buy, "making sure its you" within .5 sec and OK comes up ...click ok. Done.

This works because... guess what you are looking at your phone.

If these 5 rumours about the next iPhone will continue to be reiterated every week until the next iPhone launches, Im outa this site.
Just because another clueless "analyst" reposts the rumours he/she read somewhere doesn't mean it has to be front page news on MR, or?

I had it in my 950XL. Again, older technology - sure. I also really like Windows Hello on my SurfaceBook. That said, there are some situations where I don't want to point it at my face. Like if it is on my desk next to me, I want to just put a finger on my device to wake it up. I don't see Apple removing TouchId, but perhaps supplementing it.

This due must be from Hall & Oates and should stay in singing.

Getting up in the morning and showing my face will brick any iPhone.

Apple's widely expected 5.8-inch iPhone with an edge-to-edge OLED display will feature a front-facing 3D laser scanner for facial recognition, corroborating previous rumors, according to JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall.

iphone-facial-recognition.jpg

Hall said the scanner will replace Touch ID on the so-called iPhone 8, as Apple plans to remove the Home button to allow for the edge-to-edge display. His research note claims the so-called iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus could also have a 3D laser scanner based on increased volume of the module within Apple's supply chain.

The scanner is said to add $10 to $15 per module to the iPhone 8's bill of materials, which coupled with the OLED display, glass casing, and other increased production costs, could make its retail price up to $100 more expensive than it would be without those features, if Apple looks to maintain a similar profit margin.

The increased costs are in line with a recent report claiming the iPhone 8 could cost upwards of $1,000 in the United States.

Hall believes the switch to facial recognition will help alleviate consumer frustration when Touch ID does not work under wet conditions. He added that facial recognition will potentially be more secure than Touch ID, which could increase Apple Pay adoption among banks and merchants.

The research note said the 3D laser scanner could eventually be used for other purposes, such as augmented reality, but likely not until 2018 at the earliest. He also believes that Apple is likely to eventually open up a 3D scanning API to developers, who could use it to do "everything from determining your shoe size for online orders to helping make sure you are properly fitted on your bike."

Hall expects a strong iPhone 8 replacement cycle later this year, and he said an announcement about the product is possible as early as WWDC 2017, which kicks off June 5. Apple has not made any iPhone hardware announcements at WWDC since 2010, so treat this claim with a proverbial grain of salt for now.

>$1,000 for a phone is over the limit for too many people. I'm embarrassed that I pay as much as I do now for a phone.

First they get my fingerprint, then they get my a 3D image of my face, next they get my DNA and can start cloning me. All for extra security... oh and little clones of me can buy more iPhones :).

Ha ha ha. And you thought that was your doppelganger halfway around the world. It really was your clone!

This is crazy if true. Touch ID is just so damn convenient. It's also insanely fast and (dare I say it) doesn't need to get any faster... They already had to re-think the lock screen because Touch ID 2 is so fast you can't see your notifications. How many things in computing can you argue "don't need to get faster"?

Though I guess doing raise to wake and it unlocking, without needing your fingerprint at all is the kind of "magical" implementation Apple is good at. But I'm thinking of the edge cases (like glancing at your phone discretely) + the patents for placing a fingerprint scanner under the display... and it makes me really doubt this.

I dunno the rumours this year seem wild. Can't wait for actual leaks to begin!

The iPhone 8 will have TouchID. Do not believe this article. Apple has invested so much into TouchID even bringing it to the MacBook Pro line. It will be on the iPhone 8.

If every time I have to unlock the phone, I got to turn on the camera and do a facial scan then the battery will last barely an hour...

If it doesn't totally replace touch-ID this will be nice. In the winter, wearing gloves, finger print scanners are useless. This would make me hate Michigan winters a tiny bit less.

That's not really the attitude to have. You have been a forum member since the dawn of this website and you should know by now how Macrumors reports. If an analyst or source reports a possible prediction for the next iPhone, Macrumors reports it being it qualifies for a rumor.

And no, this hasn't been the same article reiterated. Each article has different sources or analysts reporting various features with similarities and differences , which varies in what they're reporting. Rather they be true or not, is why this is a rumored website.

Where else you expect these articles to be posted on the website other than the front page? That doesn't even seem like a point to even be brought up.

So I have to look at my phone every time I want to unlock it? I find that to be awkward and annoying. I agree with others - it would be a good addition but not a complete replacement. Yes, eliminating the button opens up design possibilities but I'm afraid that the functionality will take a step backwards.

Like a lot of posters, I'd prefer to have both Touch ID and facial recognition. That said, I have faith Apple will get it right and it won't be a step backwards. They occasionally get some things wrong, but rarely when it comes to stuff like this.

What's really interesting is the 3D scanning API for 3rd party developers. The possibilities are enormous.

replacing touchID? No. In addition? Maybe.
(possibly a stupid question: how would it work in extremely low light conditions/darkness ?)

Could be IR or something. But what if my phone is laying on the table or by my bed not facing me or even mounted on my car, bike whatever. Definitely not replacing Touch ID.

Or when wearing sunglasses, a helmet, mask ...........

I'm sure wearing items like that, or hats for that matter, will be banned in the future by His Highness Trump.
The facial recognition homeland security system needs to be able to get a good look at you. Attempts to conceal yourself like that means you must be a terrorist.

The fact this automatically effects people with head coverings for religious reasons is purely a coincidence.

Obviously complete nonsense, if they add it it's certainly not going replace Touch ID, just wouldn't work and besides if they would be doing this to get a bigger screen without the home button they wouldn't be looking at ways to read a fingerprint from under a display.

TouchID being removed and the phone up to $100 more expensive (it is expensive enough as it is now where I live) ...jesus effin' christ.

Sorry Tim Cook, but I'm out

I'm beginning to think this iP8 won't even have room for a dual sensor camera like the current 7 Plus. And if it has too much tech new to Apple then the 8S will be the one they finally get right.

Looks like my 6 Plus will need to last another year and half. It's still going strong so I'll be fine.
