Very cool. Bring on the biometrics!

Indeed. Biometrics is starting to shape the future for Mobile phones with Iris and facial recognition becoming more prominent. It's just a matter of refining this technology with the right security measures and reliability. Both of those ingredients are crucial. The other battle for some is accepting this technology as it becomes more prevalent.

Seems like Touch-id will be entirely replaced by "Face-ID" in iPhone 8. hoping it will be as fast and accurate as Touch-ID.

I find it funny, that no one, no website, no apple-community commentator - explores the angle and thoughts on "what if this leak is a hoax, a purposely planted misinformation from Apple"...? to throw us all off course... or throw the competition off course..?

Many of the iPhone 8 rumors this year have brought to mind the tear drop shaped iPhone 5 incident a number of years ago. So many people where so sure of the leaks that manufacturers were mass producing cases for it, then it never happened.

How will we be able to go back to home screen from apps?
The home button will be implemented as a software asset, likely activated by a 3D Touch press and accompanied by the phone’s Taptic Engine to create the illusion of pressing a physical button.

Much like how the current iPhone 7’s home button works — it isn’t a real button, but the Taptic Engine vibrates in such a way that it feels like a real button. In the iPhone 8, it will be the same principal, only using an entirely virtual button that responds to a 3D Touch. This would be to avoid accidental “clicks” by simply touching the home button’s area.

They just introduced Touch ID into the MacBook line so why the hell would they be now trying to eliminate it?

I can't imaging they would be intentionally 'trying' to eliminate TouchID. In fact, they are probably hard at work figuring out how to put it under the screen. *IF* these findings from the HomePod are true, then it may be nothing more sinister than Apple not making it work in time.

Besides... what about the scenarios where TouchID is not the best? What if you don't have hands? (no... not a joke) Having a second option for biometrics is not necessarily a bad idea.

Personally, I'm looking forward to voice prints. Just ask Siri to do something and she'll know who you are! Further, imagine a phone that knows it's YOU holding it versus someone else? :)

So, wiping the oil/sweat/gunk off your finger to get Touch ID to work well will be replaced by take your sunglasses/hat/wig off for Face ID to work ...

So if I am doing winter sports, I am going to have to take off my face protection rather than just taking off a glove? And if it's anything like Touch ID, I will have to have a face profile for day, night, winter, summer, dry, humid, shave day, non-shave day, etc.
Facial recognition isn't looking at your face per se. It's the math of your face not how you look. Coupled with the rumored IR camera, day/night, shave/no shave won't matter.

I can't wait to see people holding their phone up to their face to pay for stuff in stores. That's just going to be hilarious. Although I hardly ever really see people using Apple Pay so maybe it won't make a difference.

Also, get ready to hover over your phone while it lays on your desk to open it.

I don't think you have to hover over your phone at a perfect angle like Dracula to get it to work, even though it would be hilarious. :D Just a slight tilt towards your face right after you take it out of your pocket and it should work. That seems to be what they are hinting at when they say faster than Touch ID....I hope.

Hopefully identical twins all trust each other. ;). But seriously this doesn't feel super secure to me. Then again anyone can just steal your wallet and start tap paying with your debit and credit card, at least here in Canada. Though I'm pretty sure credit card companies all cover fraudulent charges here as if your card/card info is stolen/compromised.

I've never used Apple Pay but I'm assuming it only works for up to a certain amount under $100?

Facial recognition being more Fast isn't as important to me as having the security measures being important first. I would rather have facial recognition be slower than Touch ID, as long it works efficiently and my identity is protected.

I wonder how Apple will activate the facial scan feature? Will it be "always on" or only start scanning when you do some action on-screen? I know there are times when TouchID isn't the easiest to use, such as when I'm at my desk and my iPhone is on the charger stand and I have to bend my arm to get my thumb or finger to touch it without pushing the phone over or back. It would be pretty slick if I could just glance at the iPhone and have it unlock automatically.

What if it's dark like paying in a bar or club?
What if it's Halloween?
What if your wearing your bike helmet?
What if you grow a beard?

This won't work for any turnstyles i.e., the tube contactless payments. I can imagine all the business peoples headbutting the contactless machine to get to the underground looking like idiots.

Sometimes contactless machines are in arms reach away. Facial recognition won't work trying to line up angles of the camera sensing your face etc. This I'm sure will take massive amounts of processing as well as lightning neede to be instant as touch ID

Plus I miss slipping my arm out of my bed to unlock my phone because I can't open my eyes from the lack of sleep.

Or maybe Apple is not actually playing some imagined, epic four dimensional game of chess with us and their competition, and this is just a simple leak of a future firmware update for an upcoming product.

I know haha, apparently endless leaks of confirmed information from Apple on the new iPhone, leaked by Apple 'accidentally'...apparently.. I don't believe it either. It's either a deliberate leak to survey reactions or false information. Their has been NO iPhone 7S information offered by these people going through the firmware....

Pearl ID clearly refers to our pearly whites. It will deny access to our iPhone if we haven't brushed our teeth! ADA approved.

Ha. The first thing I thought of, was "pearls before swine".

Which, considering all the whining about facial recognition, might not be that far off :D

How will we be able to go back to home screen from apps?

Look very sternly at the screen.

Or, as someone pointed out, use the virtual home button which will likely be on the bottom part of the extra long display... just like is done on Android.

I can't wait to see people holding their phone up to their face to pay for stuff in stores.

Facial can work from pretty far away.

I suspect you'd only have to glance down at the phone in your hand once, and it'll pre-arm Apple Pay authentication.

This HomePod firmware wasn't a leak by Apple, it's an official beta release by Apple. Hence the theory this is no accident the information is in the firmware.

Well, I feel like no Touch ID is a big let down. I might just have to wait for the "iPhone 8S" to replace my iPhone 6S.
