The more I hear this, the more upset I get. I don't use Apple Pay, but Touch ID has become so flawless and easy, and I do not see facial recognition being better or easier to use. If this comes to fruition, I will look at other mobile options. A fingerprint sensor on the back is better than none at all.

TouchID is like the headphone jack. Old tech. You need to stop living in the past. It's just like Apple to dump old tech in favor of design while still providing the functionality.

Are we sure there is a 7s this year though? I have not seen any real leaks of it. There was code suggesting a 6.5" inch screen iPhone, some have said this is the 7s Plus, but isn't it more likely the 8 plus?

Well security is obviously very important, but I doubt that face id will be as convenient as touch id... As long as it isn't I almost see it as a step backwards in that regard.

I welcome this as I tend to have sweaty hands that make TouchID unusable for me at times, but I don’t like the idea of having to ~see~ my iPhone directly every time I want to unlock it. A friend does that with her Galaxy and it’s ridiculous.

Obviously you never used Apple Pay in person, and have unfortunately got a wrong impression about how it works.

You're right. Apple is wrong. LOL.

"To help ensure the security of Apple Pay, you must have a passcode set on your device and, optionally, Touch ID.[...] To send your payment information, you must authenticate using Touch ID or your passcode."

If they get rid of Touch ID and rely solely on facial recognition, I predict a debacle that will rival the launch of Apple Maps.

Poor choice for Apple to include old tech on the MacBook Pro's for the first time in 2016 then. In that case, people who dislike Apple are right, they can't keep up with innovation.

You guys realise it'll have both Touch ID and Face ID, right? Face ID wont replace Touch!

Just because it is a little older isn't a valid argument to remove it.

I think I am finally reaching the acceptance stage on the death of Touch ID.

If the iPhone 8 (or whatever it will be called) doesn't have touchID in anyway, we are most likely never going to see TouchID under the Display. I doubt they would suddenly feel the need to add fingerprint scanning back, after hyping the **** out of facial recognition.

Yes. Sadly that would be the case.
Mad and stupid in my opinion. Just can't understand that only few people see the huge problems coming with facial scanning.
Me personally, I will not buy this thing. Would have just waited till the fingerprint scanning technology was ready. Like the white color with the iPhone4. Apple can afford to wait but maybe the shareholders would get nervous .. SAD

I always thought the people who said Touch ID was intrinsic to the architecture of Apple Pay were being downright silly. Did you all forget that Apple Watch does not have any problems making an Apple Pay transaction...without Touch ID? Expect the iPhone 8s Apple Pay to be just as seamless as the Apple Watch. You won't need to do any action to authenticate. Your phone will invisibly authenticate itself when you wake up the display. It will just automatically know that YOU are the person holding the phone.

That's what I'm expecting from Face ID/Iris Engine. I can't see Apple replacing Touch ID unless they had something exponentially better.

I just realized something--what if facial recognition is only going to be for larger transactions? Smaller ones might only need the screen to be turned on for NFC to work, and since most are under $50 or so...

(Yeah, it'll reduce AP's security to the same level as contactless cards but it's not like the US has many of those anyway.)

Most people have little understanding of Apple Pay even though it's been launched nearly 3 years ago. Look above at tongxinshe for example. They're making general statements without even understanding what Apple Pay requires.

I'm surprised people are still asking questions like "what if it's dark/I'm wearing glasses/a hat???"

The whole point of TouchID was that it was an easy way to secure your phone. It was convenient. As said by Apple, you'd "forget it was even there."

If they were going to replace it, don't you think they would do so with a method that's equally seamless? Sure- I guess there's a possibly it could be complete crap but that's very doubtful.

ApplePay does work with a passcode;

"Every transaction on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac requires you to authenticate with Touch ID or your passcode"

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201469

You have to disable TouchID to get the option to authenticate with your passcode.

I can't wait to see people holding their phone up to their face to pay for stuff in stores. That's just going to be hilarious. Although I hardly ever really see people using Apple Pay so maybe it won't make a difference.

Also, get ready to hover over your phone while it lays on your desk to open it.

The scenario is pretty unlikely to be fair. Apple Pay is only available on iPhones that have touchID and you can only use the Pin if you've disabled touchID for Apple Pay. You can't simply use it as an alternative when you feel like it, or have gloves on - it has to be disabled for Apple Pay globally. What percentage of people do you imagine do that?

They just introduced Touch ID into the MacBook line so why the hell would they be now trying to eliminate it?
Obviously Apple failed to materialize the in-display TouchID. Now they start marketing that facial recognition as the next big thing. All these leaks and comments from Apple crooks will ease out the tension from their failure.
