I think Apple may have shoot themselves in the foot, there is no flagship iPhone anymore: the iPhone 7s (aka 8) isn't the latest and greatest, and iPhone X is a niche product due to the price, controversy and limited stock.

iPhone X is the flagship model.

The iPhone 8 devices are still incredible phones, and they still give people two distinct sizes to choose from.

OR Apple had plenty of stock.
Well there's that, but my uneducated guess is that the Apple is still selling older models for less, couple that without any major game changing feature, and the odds of slower sales is very high - at least that's my opinion. I wouldn't call it a flop but rather just that its selling slower.

Make up your mind.

MacRumors when Apple runs out of preorders: "Damn Apple, artificially restricting supply to justify driving up prices and create hype for their products!! *screech!!*"

MacRumors when Apple has enough supply for preorders: "This confirms it, this phone is flopping already...*screech!!*"

The X is very much their flagship product, you (and I), may not like the price, but it is the flagship product.

Flagship is going to be the phone that sells the most right? I agree for the future the flagship Apple wants eventually is the X form-factor, however right now, I think the reason Apple still offers LCD-based iPhones is due to the very limited OLED production, and if you remember their presentation, the big splash was the iPhone 8, and the iPhone X was left at the end as "one more thing...". So I think for this release cycle Apple expects the iPhone 8 and plus will be 2/3 of their income and the iPhone X 1/3 or so.

But consumers have this confusing and unappealing proposition, hence it's not just you and me that don't like the price, but the mass market that Apple appeals to, the X price range I think is still niche.

Not necessarily

It's just the leading product from a company.

The iphone 6SSS with the same dinosaur design along with the same pathetic screens & rescaling is the new iphone 5C. It's positioned as a mid tier product. I'm sure some will buy them but they're for the mostly unwashed.

Its not a flop at all, clearly you already know most people are going for the X. What else is supposed to happen when you create all that hype for the X model and push the release date back? I personally upgraded from the 7+ to the 8+. All the subtle upgrades that was done to the 8 is enough for me to warrant an upgrade.

And they will be coming back once they realize the X is not usable with one hand. Reachability is gone and they moved the control center gesture to the very top.

I heard the same thing about my 6 plus I bought 3 years ago. And to this day it still remains my favorite size, and do almost everything with one hand.

I'm just super happy it took me 30 seconds after the Apple Store app opened to place my 8+ order. Having the pre approval for IUP made it super easy and fast. Best launch ever for me at least.

I was all for the X until I thought:

1. Not available until two extra IUP payments, messing up next year.
2. Maybe not available *then*!
3. Screen issues with notch and screen size not larger than my current 7 Plus.
4. Face ID is new, and eh....

Conclusion: Get an 8 Plus, let all this stuff work its way out, and get the 11 (whatever) next year on the normal schedule with better 'all of the above'. I really didn't want to wait until the end of October and *then* be stiffed!

(Yes, you've seen it before, but this is why a lot of people aren't waiting for the X.)

Have to agree with the OP. Even though it's only a few hours in, this is the third cycle of this platform! It has not changed enough to be considered the "next version". And even though it has new guts the competition is getting ahead in every area, especially display technology. I almost see the X as a catch-up to Samsung.

Recycling the same platform is the best way to maximize margins but they have taken it too far this time with the 8 series. Profit over innovation is the reason for the 8 series. Maybe they have to recoup the cost of the X and the 8's will help them do that.

People really need to get some perspective. Preorders began less than 5 hours ago, at a time when practically no one is awake, and people are now waking up to find that it's already impossible to get a launch day delivery, and this is with people knowing that a more premium phone is just 6 weeks away.

We also have no idea what the supply was like. It's ridiculous and irrational to think that any conclusions can be drawn right now. People are just letting their preconceptions and personal opinions influence their interpretation.
