I was all for the X until I thought:

1. Not available until two extra IUP payments, messing up next year.
2. Maybe not available *then*!
3. Screen issues with notch and screen size not larger than my current 7 Plus.
4. Face ID is new, and eh....

Conclusion: Get an 8 Plus, let all this stuff work its way out, and get the 11 (whatever) next year on the normal schedule with better 'all of the above'. I really didn't want to wait until the end of October and *then* be stiffed!

(Yes, you've seen it before, but this is why a lot of people aren't waiting for the X.)

Pretty much my thinking as well.

With any of these new phones, I'd say, "what's the rush?" Let others be the beta testers on the X. The 8? After the 7, I don't trust Apple to bring out a fully functioning product. They never did fix the crappy speaker phone quality of the 7 Plus, which may mean they couldn't via a software patch. I say "may" because they've had ample time to fix the bugs in Music but haven't bothered, so who knows?

I don't know if iPhone8 / 8 Plus is a flop but I can say that I was easily able to order 4 IPhone 8 plus 256gb today. 1 on launch day and 3 phones I will get a week later.

I plan to use 1 and sell the other 3. In Hong Kong these phones can be sold at about US $100 to US $200 or more as profit. If true then I can probably get to keep one of the 4 phones for free. That won't be bad idea until the IPhone X releases.

People really need to get some perspective. Preorders began less than 5 hours ago, at a time when practically no one is awake, and people are now waking up to find that it's already impossible to get a launch day delivery, and this is with people knowing that a more premium phone is just 6 weeks away.

We also have no idea what the supply was like. It's ridiculous and irrational to think that any conclusions can be drawn right now. People are just letting their preconceptions and personal opinions influence their interpretation.

iPhone X supply constraints limit Apple's production to less than 10,000 units per day

By comparison Apple sold 78.3 million iPhone 7 first quarter. Do the math.

EDIT: 78.3 million first quarter, not launch.

Except the iPhone 8 launched at 5pm in Australia and only now, almost 5 hours later, is the delivery starting to slip out to a mere 1-2 weeks on 1-2 models. Usually in Australia it slips to 1-2 weeks on all models in the first 15-30 seconds.

Its not a flop at all, clearly you already know most people are going for the X. What else is supposed to happen when you create all that hype for the X model and push the release date back? I personally upgraded from the 7+ to the 8+. All the subtle upgrades that was done to the 8 is enough for me to warrant an upgrade.
this is where I fell as well. It was enough of an upgrade for me to get it and give my 7plus to my daughter

You can argue that its probably doing as well as ever but none of the evidence points to that.

There were almost 0 leaks about the actual 8/+ in the lead up to release so either apple played a blinder in keeping this on the down low whilst producing more 8's than it did 7's or they are doing business as usual.

Pre-orders in previous years have slipped almost immediately once pre-orders are live. Within 15 minutes you are looking at unpopular colours and the top storage tiers if you want to get one in the first few weeks of launch.

General feeling on 3-4 forums I am on which have a wide demographic of people on are lukewarm at best and largely disinterested.

People on here are largely disinterested.

They raised the price of each model considerably whilst delivering very few improvements the average person would use or notice.

You can still get almost any configuration you want directly from apple in the UK with no wait at all.

If you think apple are selling these in anything like the numbers they have done previously you are being very naive.

Dates are still slipping, of course they won't slip like they typically do, there's many others waiting for another phone, in years past there was only one option therefore logic would state more of the only option are gonna be sold, hence quicker delayed ship times. Staggering the release will definitely help with the demand, yes a lot of ppl are buying the X, but don't forget how many countries are out because of the ridiculous exchange rate price and simply it isn't a worldwide release the first wave.

Really? Wow, so IPhone X will be nearly impossible to get stock in Australia?

Well it's 6:55 EST here and I can preorder an iPhone 8 plus, unlocked for delivery in a week or just over a week depending on color and capacity. That tells me everyone is going for the iPhone X in about a month.

Not me. Bought an 8 this morning. The X doesn't interest me in the slightest, I'd rather keep TouchID.;)

And they will be coming back once they realize the X is not usable with one hand. Reachability is gone and they moved the control center gesture to the very top.

Um, the iPhone 8 plus (the one with the same size screen as the X), has the same single hand usability concerns. Never seemed to affect sales of the plus size phones before.

I did the same and have for months wanted the X but as I got more details I jumped on the 8+ to replace my 7+. Love my 7+ very much but love new hardware and my 7+ is going to make a great B-day gift for a family member.

I think Apple may have shoot themselves in the foot, there is no flagship iPhone anymore: the iPhone 7s (aka 8) isn't the latest and greatest, and iPhone X is a niche product due to the price, controversy and limited stock.

Ha...funny. You spent 0.0 minutes with the X and already declared it to be niche. Apple disagrees with you.

The iphone 6SSS with the same dinosaur design along with the same pathetic screens & rescaling is the new iphone 5C. It's positioned as a mid tier product. I'm sure some will buy them but they're for the mostly unwashed.

Wow. Judgemental much? o_O I bought one and I'm perfectly clean.

I just upgraded to the 7 Plus Product Red. Preorders still have delivery for 09/22 for most models. I think I will go into AT&T on the 22nd and see it in person, and if it seems like a big difference in performance, etc, I will return my 7 Plus and upgrade to the 8 Plus.

Is a $1000 phone a mainstream price point? It's debatable to say the least, no? For this release cycle I think it's niche and Apple wants it that way because they can't produce them fast enough, they pushed X pre-order as far back as possible to get more people to order iPhone 8 now.

The date is carefully picked as Apple does not want people returning their 8/8+ to get the X. From production numbers I have heard, there is going to be some waiting on the X for a while.

I think Apple expects to sell as many of them as it can make. And I expect that to be in the 10s of millions. Far from niche.

Here in Belgium there is a huge difference compared to last year release. Last year it was next to impossible to get a 7+ for months after the release. It sold out immediately and everywhere. It was quite impressive to have a 3 year old design sell out so quickly and for such a long time.

After more then a month i still couldn't get one online and had to wake up at 6 am several times to try to reserve one for pickup at the Brussels apple store.

Compared to this year : I can now go online and get an 8+ with delivery on 22/9 and no delay. The difference is night and day.

The X is going to sell out for sure, but the 8th won't do great business compared to last year.

This was a tough year to decide on what I wanted. Initially I was prepared to go all in for the X since the price and size was correct from most leaks. What changed it for me was seeing that it wouldn't ship until early November at best because of the issues with my current (old) phone.

Each year I end up getting the new phone, give my wife my previous phone and sell hers. It's a system that has worked ever since the iPhone 5. Even though I'd technically be upgrading from a 7 Plus to an 8 Plus, I have my previous 6s Plus back and she likes to destroy batteries and phones (one time) so it would be painful to wait until 11/3.

I feel that the 8 Plus will hold me over until next year and has enough features to make it feel like a new phone (although not the super fancy phone). I'm looking forward to hearing/seeing reviews once it does launch and seeing it in person since a few of my friends are waiting for the X. Once next September rolls around the X form factor should be the default so I can enjoy it then. Who knows, maybe they'll even have a Plus model available at that time since I don't mind the overall size of the Plus.
