Why would Apple get credit for this? It's already available in many phones out there.
That's what i thought too but the commenters point still stands in terms of the overall build and components used. There will always be one feature or spec that Samsung or Google or HTC, etc. beats Apple on. But overall, the build quality and the components used in iPhones is always top level. This isn't taken into account when consumers complain about the price of flagship phones, particularly leading ones like Apple's iPhone. It might not be THE best at any single thing but iPhone is THE best overall phone when you consider the entire package.

First time in awhile nobody knows what's really going on with next iPhone. Finally a bit of excitement.
I've had the feeling Apple have been leaking false information about this new phone too, just to add confusion and help smother genuine leaks. And I really like it!

I'll be in the cold cold ground before my iPhone will control me.

Lol, when your iPhone rings, you run to pick it up & see who it is. The very second your iPhone alarm goes off, you spring into action to perform whatever task you set the alarm for. Your Pavlovian responses automatically kick in whenever you hear a FB, Twitter, or iMessage notification; especially if you’re already in the middle of a conversation.
You take turns when it tells you & stop when it tells you that you’ve arrived.... etc.

I could do this all day.

It is amusing the imaginary line you’ve drawn in the sand to convince yourself that a future iPhone would “control you”, but that the current one can’t/doesn’t.

Inaccurate leaks are harmful especially when they involve advanced features that won't make it into the actual device. If Apple were to be leaking information about under-glass touch ID, 3D facial recognition, super accurate laser autofocus, wireless charging, advanced AR sensors, etc. and doesn't actually produce such a product customers will be disappointed.

Underpromise and overdeliver is the right way, not the opposite. The best thing for Apple is to either make sure the information being distributed is substantially accurate or just simply ignore it altogether. Putting out false information does absolutely nothing positive unless they are trying to set a trap to catch an insider leak.

Guess what, after the iPhone 8 is released, we are going to: eat, sleep, defecate just the same and there will be another one next year and our lives are not going to be dramatically improved by it. But guess what, Apple will get more money, Tim, Angela, Eddy, Jony, Craig will get a raise. Seriously, if you have an iPhone 7, 6s, 6, 5s, 5, keep it and save the money until 2020. Only people should be upgrading are 2g, 3g, 3gs, 4 and 4s.
If I had an iPhone 5 I would be itching to upgrade, even to the 7S. I just went from 6 to 7 Plus and notice an improvement.

And what would that be, and why do you consider it gimmick BS?

I'd like to see improved battery life, and not gimmicks with the same battery life. I'd take 1 hour extra battery any day over 3D Touch as an example.

you know what feature we all would love and would be of ZERO cost to apple

Let us choose Default Apps on the iPhone.

Keep your lasers, facial scans, etc.

WE WANT CHOICE!

iPhone 6 and newer don't have a compelling reason to upgrade. The usable screen size of the iPhone 8 will likely be 5.1" which isn't a huge improvement over the 6 and is smaller than the 6+.

An argument can be made for the 5S if you are satisfied with the screen size. There wasn't another option back then so I suspect a lot of 5S buyers would have picked a larger model if they had been available. In those cases an upgrade might be worthwhile.

The 5 and 5C aren't going to support iOS 11. There may be some app compatibility issues as well as the fact these phones are 4+ years old now and battery life & normal wear are probably taking their toll. If I was still using a 5 I would definitely be looking to upgrade to at least a new SE or a 7 once they drop off of first-tier status.

The rumored 8 and 7S put me in a conundrum. I prefer top-tier phones, both for features and for show, and would want an 8; however, at $1,000+ I'm not in the market no matter what features they offer. If the 7S remains at the same $650 and $770 price points as the 7 I would also be out. Outside of potential wireless charging there aren't any significant rumored advantages over the 7 and I would just save the $100 and get the third-tier device if I really needed one.

Since I have a 6+ I think I will be skipping this year in the hopes enough others do the same and Apple prices the 8S more competitively.

The rumors surrounding this phone are all over the place. Makes me wonder if Apple's design teams are even focused. Seems like they're just a bunch of guys with ADD.

More like the usual suspects in the Apple rumor industry are all over the place.

Case 1: Mommy, someone took my iPhone 8 at school :....(
Case 2: Dear, I think your iPhone 8 went overboard....
Case 3: Daddy.... I left my iPhone 8 in the cab I think
Case 4: Baby, I think my iPhone 8 felt from my pocket at the movie theater...

$1000......!!!!

That is an unusually clumsy family. Do people actually lose phones? My wife lose everything, but has never lost a phone.

The Plus size is really why I would consider upgrading. I have the standard 6s, but I like the larger screen. If the 7s uses the screen design of the 8, I might settle for a cheaper 2016 iPhone 7 Plus Black.

Here's a May 2017 patent for a revolutionary laser assisted autofocus module using MEMS scanned laser light with advanced 3D depth sensing capability.

The company (Microvision) that owns the patent (and other 3D sensing patents) has a recently announced partnership with STMicroelectronics in 3D sensing, AR, laser projection and other applications. STM is widely expected to provide newly developed advanced 3D sensing modules to Apple this year and next.

You are pretty sure because you work at Apple beside Craig? Or pretty sure because you are guessing? It has a 64 bit A-Series processor, its not impossible for iOS 12 to support it too, might not get all features.
Educated guess based on past history of iOS accessibility.

Now please continue to get bothered over people wanting to upgrade to a new phone.

Lasers are unsafe if the beams enter the eyes.

Not really, if we're talking about Class II and IIIA laser pointers, for instance. It's no worse than a "flashbulb" effect (I'll wait while our younger readers look that up. "You see, Rusty..."). Your eyes would return to normal in a minute or so.

What I really want to know is can I just set it on stun?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I honestly believe Apple has found a way to QUADRUPLE down on security/leaks, and is throwing bs info out into the rumor mill to increase hype and throw people off. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about this release, but no one can sit here and say this release doesn't feel different than that of recent years. No one knows what's going on! I mean, we haven't even seen internal part-leaks yet from any of the devices. Regardless of what the TouchID issues are on the 8 model, surely the 7S/7S Plus designs are locked down and production should have started already for a late September release. You would think we would at least have a rear panel, but we haven't seen ANYTHING from those devices yet. I think that alone is evidence of their plugging the leaks.

This sounds fascinating, but I hope it is not used to justify another insane price hike. Brexit is more than pinching now lol!

I'm holding out until the iPhone can be used as a light saber / bagel toaster *

*disclaimer I only source whole foods, pure GMO modified, jailbroken bagels

I think it will be 999 dollars

Why would APPL bring all the features in this phone? OLED and shrinking of bezels alongwith front touch id embedded in the glass are more than sufficient this year. Other features will be introduced over next 2 years or so..

Last night I heard that the iPhone 8 could go for up to $1.3k.

If this phone starts out above $999.00 I'd be hoping it has ALL the bells and whistles, so more features bring them on.

Your gonna have to work hard for my money this time Apple!

My 7 Plus is in no hurry to go anywhere.

The price of cell phones are getting ridiculous.
