Use Google Maps. It will tell you when you're approaching a turn. eg. "In 600m turn left onto Main Street North... Turn left onto Main Street North".

I've been using iPhones for years and I've never used Apple Maps. I heard too many horror stories when it first launched, and although I have no doubt that it's MUCH better now, I've never had any reason to not use Google.

I see; perhaps it's time for a change. I've stuck with Apple Maps since I haven't had any issues like those horror stories we've heard, and the automatic integration into the rest of iOS is useful. But more intelligent directions wins.

Apple Maps is the Bing of search engine :p

I made a similar point in another thread a day or two ago. At first Apple Maps was decidedly worse than Google Maps. Within a year it hadn't caught up, but the worst of it's deficiencies had been handled. I commonly use it now, especially if I need to voice search a location while driving. Once in a blue moon I still have Siri 'I don't understand' type problems, but not often. And I find that if I get a wrong set of directions it is more often with Google, not that either system makes large mistakes very often. Driving to a location (in Nebraska) for the eclipse a few weeks ago was a good example: Google told me to take a road clearly marked 'minimum maintenance' that had a bridge that was out, and probably had been out for years. The minimum maintenance sign, the bridge out sign, and the bridge were all visible from where I was told to make the turn onto that road, so I switched to Apple Maps and had no problems.

Also as soon as you have all the evidence you need, please stop referring to it as the ‘iPhone 8’. If that evidence gets released, I hope everyone does that but realistically it probably won’t happen, iPhone 8 gets more clicks.

Is it just me... who really cares about how Siri can be activated?

Siri is just not good generally... 10 years with an iPhone and I just don't see people really using Siri...

The ONLY reason I use Apple Maps is for Carplay integration... Even then I get poor results... and please don't talk to me about Siri... ask for breakfast place and get Cinema results... Sent captures of this to Apple and of course no feedback.

Probably not, on the latest beta builds of iOS 11, a quintiple Sleep/Wake button-press triggers this screen. No need for a long press to power off your device.View attachment 715684

I thought this was well-known already. The 5-press of the of the power button is used to get to the SOS screen and force you to type in your passcodes (deactivates TouchID).

Was added to give you an easy way to force passcode in the case where you don't want to be required by the police to unlock your phone with your thumb (which they can do) vs passcode (which they can't).

And I have the same problem with Google. Something about my voice evidently makes it hard for Google to interpret. So the crappy results you get from Siri I still get from Google, although less often as time goes by.

i dont think it will be by holding....i think that longer power button will have 2 physical contacts, 1 for power/sleep, and the other for Siri
[doublepost=1504437804][/doublepost]
and in that case how will you reset your device IF the ios is frozen?
That seems like a bad idea to me. How many accidents will this cause where the user wants to invoke Siri but instead puts their device to sleep and vise versa? I’m starting to think that the button will be more to invoke Siri and sleep will become an automatic function that occurs a few seconds after you stop looking at the screen. Those front sensors know when you’re paying attention to the device so why do you need a button anymore. Maybe it will be something you can toggle like the mute switch/rotation lock on old iPads.

And Siri on iOS 11 is much better. People seem to think that Apple has dropped the ball with Siri, but it’s really on par with google assistant in feature set and is superior in visual results presentation and personal security (assistant relies on a knowledge graph stored on google servers, something they can monetize, while Siri in iOS 11 creates an encrypted on-device knowledge graph).

Someone should dig up an old YouTube video of Siri where it fails to do various stuff and splice in Siri from iOS 11 accomplishing those tasks.

In my experience, when it comes down to usability, Google Assistant is far superior compared to Siri. Just try installing the Google app and then put the same questions to both assistants. Google's has better language comprehension, a faster response time, and better answers almost every time. Sad but true.

Seriously? ...
You also have to remember you are comparing two vastly different platform. One being based on a open-source platform (Android) and one being based on a closed-source, locked-down platform (iOS). ...

I hope you know, the iOS kernel is based on the BSD kernel, something that is free and open. You can also install different smart assistants from the Apple store.

I use Siri all the time. Although, there are areas for improvement with dictation and deciphering, I find it very convenient and much faster than I type as well. That said, in one two weeks, your post might be reflected differently if this new revamped Siri is promising enough to better the experience. In which case, I believe Apple has been working to have Siri ready for The new HomePod as well.

I have the assistant app on the first page of my home screen. I would agree wholeheartedly when comparing iOS10 but disagree with iOS 11 beta. Siri got a major upgrade.

The differences in open/closed between iOS and Android are very interesting. Android’s google play store is just as locked down as the App Store, but Android does allow for easier third party OS modification (that’s why each vendor has their own skin). This comes with a pretty large security downside though...Android is a security nightmare.

And you have hit upon the reason I still use Apple products, especially the iPhone. No system is totally secure, but Android is worse than most, simply because it allows modifications that others, including iPhone, won't.

this iPhone 8 is turning into a convoluted mess.

You just said a mouthful. Just turning the thing on while driving is going to be a nightmare that no one is even talking about! How the hell can you do a facial scan authentication WHILE DRIVING?

I can even see class action lawsuits in the future or this being Tim Cooks job on the line unless they have a simple solution that has so far not been revealed.

Maybe they fooled everyone and Touch ID will still remain under the screen. I sure as hell hope so. Or this might be Tim Cook's NEWTON!

I think I'm buying an iPhone 7 before the prices skyrocket.

There can only be class action lawsuits if Apple promises you can do "X" with a device and it turns out you can't. Just because you could do that something with a previous model and you can't now is not a bias for legal action.

Just remove Siri functionality altogether, until it's useful anyway.

Last week at work - I asked a coworker if a particular Walmart near us happened to be 24 hours. Neither of us knew, so he reached for his iPhone 7. He activated Siri and proceeded to ask. No dice. He rephrased, dumbed down, typed and STILL it was difficult to get a correct answer, or for the right info to pop up on the screen.

Asked another coworker who I knew use Android, and immediately upon asking it took her to the correct info, less than 2 seconds spent.

Siri is TRASH and hasn't been upgraded in any meaningful way since the iPhone 4. Sad.

Seems like a lot of changes are coming, personally I feel the '8' this year is worth a skip, and see how it's refined for next year.

I still think a better move is to have a on screen home button that hides itself when it's not needed (during videos etc). Or a pressure button under screen like the S8, as well as the sleep/wake if necessary.

Ok, we'll see if they overpromise. I'll bet money they do promise it will do more than the iPhone 7 and more easily!
We'll see.

Either way, this is going to be worse then Steve Jobs' Blu-Ray "Bag O' Hurt."

I never have those problems. Siri works all the time for me. I just tested Walmart and said "Take me to Walmart". In less than the 2 seconds spent on Android, I got a list of Walmarts ranked by how close they are to my location. I think it took 1 second.
