Maybe not in the photo but in real life I can see the gap a mile off. A few here can see it in the photos which are a lot less obvious. It’s being swapped tomorrow anyway so will see what the replacement is like.

I simply can’t understand anybody paying so much for a phone and being happy for it to be 90% perfect. The price is 100% perfect for apple so the quality should be too for me
Matt

Ok OP... here's my new 8 Plus.

I don't see any gaps... but if I tilted the phone right I could probably see where the glass meets the metal and call it a gap.

Let us know what they say when you return it... :)

EverythingApplePro says in his drop test vid of the iPhone 8/8+ that this "gap" you are complaining about is desired. He says it's a small plastic bezel that acts as a cushion which absorbs stress when dropping the phone. This will eventually prevent the glass from bursting.

Perhaps "gap" is not the best term to describe the defect, more like misaligned, since I don't see an empty space between layers. It's also odd that the misalignment is on the on/off button side on the front and on the volume up/down side of the phone on the back

Just had my iPhone 8 Plus delivered and happy for the most part. Only issue I have is that if you look at the phone the left top seems to have a little more gap between the glass and the aluminium than the right top , don't know if that would decrease its waterproofness? I don't plan on getting it wet but you can never say never. 4k 60fps video seems good quality!

Matt
this is not a proper iPhone, return it asap!

Hi Matt, You are not alone. I have exactly the same issue on my iPhone 8 Plus, I have created a new thread with some pictures:

That’s manufacturing tolerance. Glass also needs an expansion gap to cope with fluctuations in temperature otherwise it would crack. I would imagine the iPhone is sealed pretty well for waterproofness and this goes beyond how the glass is bonded to the back of the device.

Way to go Apple!!! Replacement came and it wouldn't turn on. I have never had a phone delivered that had no charge in it at all. Plugged it in and the red battery symbol came up. Its sat here for 2 hours now and still showing the empty battery icon with a little red at the end.

Look like I have a 2nd faulty phone from Apple that costs nearly a grand.

Way to go Apple

How is it Apple’s fault that you were nit picky about your original phone? I told you there is no perfect phone. There was nothing wrong with your original phone. They are producing tens of thousands of phones a day, if you think there wont be any defects on any of them, you are dreaming.

Yes on that last picture there is a clear misalignment just above the button as if the rear case has not been secured together even. Likewise on the 2nd pic where the corner curve appears to not be equal between the 2 parts.
Like you I would not be happy if I had just paid out close to 1k, but as others have said Apple will sort (quite a trip for you though) although its an 02 issue from your other posts.

Read that you now have a replacement that's in the red, would it not pay to just leave it on charge for a day and see how it pans out ?

You are obviously easier to please than me then. I totally totally disagree that no phones can be perfect. My galaxy s7 edge that I had a few years ago was absolutely perfect in every way. The galaxy note before that was perfect. Just bought a new monitor that is perfect. Just bought a new watch that is perfect. There is perfect things out there and when you are paying top money for something you should expect perfection. The excuse such as “they produce tens of thousands a day” makes no difference to that. If Apple are aware that they can’t produce a perfect phone then they should close the business and admit it.

I won’t apologise for wanting what I have paid for.

I went through 6 iPhone 4(s) because of solid yellow displays. It was so bad, that blue text bubbles looked green. Thats a problem. The gap that you had was tiny and probably in the margin of error. I've seen many devices at the Apple Store with very similar gaps. But again, the photos you used have altered the perception of the issues. Its all about the angle of the camera.

There is no such thing as perfect, you have just yet to find the problem with it. I look for the tiniest defects on all of my devices. I found a spec on the bottom of my new MacBook that appears is a chip in the aluminum, but it doesn't affect my usage of the device, so I don't care.

You claimed that the gap on the back of the device was going to hurt the water resistance rating. The phone is not supposed to be submerged anyway, the SIM card slot is going to take in more water than a possible gap because the glass and the plastic seal. If you could prove that that gap actually caused the water leak, then I bet Apple would allow you to make a claim under warranty for it, even though thats not typically covered. My point being, you had a pretty much flawless device within the margin of error of 30+ devices I looked at at Apple yesterday, and now you got a device that is actually defective. You did get what you paid for with your original device.

My 8+ has the same issue! One side looks normal, but the right side, it has a gap big enough for me to slip a piece of paper in it. I spoke with Apple support and they advised me to have it looked at so they booked me an appointment this week to have it looked at. I'm afraid is won't be as water resistant, especially with my Hawaii trip in less than 2 weeks.

Did you get Apple Care plus?

Go look at the Apple Store (if you are nearby), almost all of the devices have the gap. Additionally, water damage is not covered under warranty, so I wouldn't take that anywhere near water. Doesn't matter if its water resistant or not. People here have had their devices become unusable for using it in the rain even though Apple used to have commercials of the phone being used in the rain.

Yep, I see it on the camera side of your device in the 3 picture as you tilt it towards the camera. Its all about the angle of the photo.

I know it's not covered, but if there is a gap with no seal between the display and frame, then the chances of a splash that would otherwise not penetrate, does get in it, then I'm ****ed while on vacation. I have a waterproof case that I'm using with it for photos while on the water. I'm not going diving with it but I also don't want to risk it.

This shows the proper seal between the display and Frame on mine, vs the right side which doesn't appear to have a seal at all. I have insurance but even then, I don't wanna pay $200+ to fix something that was caused because it wasn't assembled properly. That's their fault. Not mine. Water gets splashed on the display, seeps in that gap and fries it. Then Apple says well warranty never covered water damage. My point is, if it was sealed properly, water damage would have never happened in the first place.

As I have mentioned multiple times in the thread. Photo angles are everything. The one showing the gap is clearly at a different angle and therefore cannot be accurately compared. It exaggerates the issue.

As Strelok said. All the seals are on the inside of the phone.
