Nope. Unless it can do something vastly and importantly different than my 6S is doing now there is no way I'll spend that on a yearly updated product. I know I know, that's blasphemy for the fanboys, but this is a little crazy.

Still too cheap. Needs to be prestigiously higher like $1300 starting. Focus on quality instead of quantity so cut back from 2GB to 1GB of custom Apple designed DRAM.

My 6s Plus I bought used last August (2 weeks old, outside of return window) cost the guy I bought it from after taxes + accessories over $1200. The phone was a 128 GB Unlocked 6s Plus ($950), with an Apple silicone case ($45), 2 Spigen Glass screen protectors ($20), and AppleCare+ ($100) with tax added onto that. I bought it for $660, so I got a great deal.

That aside, these prices don't seem too crazy for a new iPhone. I do wish the prices would stay the same or drop, but I'm willing to pay this much for a phone, especially since it's by far my most used piece of tech.

Demand will be off the charts for the new flagship this year. Not everyone will buy in for sure, but the shares are soaring on expectations of blockbuster sales and unprecedented demand for iPhone 8.

I'm almost tempted to set up camp tomorrow outside my local Apple Store.

And guess what? If I get it for 'free' with my phone plan at the same rate I got my last 2 iPhones, I couldn't care less how much it "cost".

So basically the same price as my 7 plus. And what does "mainstream luxury mean". Mass produced in China + discounted often does not equal any kind of luxury.

Valid as a "status symbol", no.... but is it a "luxury" item? Absolutely!
The fact that it is available to people, even of lower socio-economic status is simply a minor leveling of the playing field. Like, "hey, you may not be able to drive a Maybach & party in Hawaii every other Tuesday, like the millionaire that lives up the hill; but when it comes down to the device that both of you two use for hours a day to connect with loved ones, record memories, do business, etc... there is 100% parity! Sure, he could buy one dipped in gold if he chooses, but FEATURES (and design and build) wise, you enjoy the absolute top tier as any other human on this planet!"
To me... that is awesome.
Steve alluded to this in a very old interview- basically saying that he wanted everyone to have access to technology that was also "a work of art" (or something like that, lol... as I said- it was a very old interview).

Crazy prices. Better wait a bit. After the initial hoopla carriers will have deals. I just got during Xmas two iPhones and the second was free with AT&T.
I definitely would not pay these higher prices. Almost the cost of a MacBook. Come on.

Having the latest model is still seen as a status symbol, just the same for persons carrying around a Samsung G8. For me, I have other priorities in life other than having a new matte black or jet black, like: buying food, keeping the lights on, paying for Internet, putting aside money for retirement and emergencies.

Spending $1000 is a lot of money for the vast majority of people, considering the US citizens have less than $500 in the bank because they have to live pay check to check. Some of that debt is due to desire to keep up with the Jones by having the latest and greatest gadgets and toys.

Todays Internet, consumerism and capitalism make it even more difficult for consumers to control their spending. You have YouTube videos coming from you left right and center and ad banners every where. If don't know how to set your priorities straight, you end up broke and homeless before 30.

Yet I see plenty of people on the bus system in poor areas using an iPhone 7 Plus. Not a status symbol.

You will do what Apple tells you to do, and like it.

I understand laptops being expensive. I expect to keep mine for multiple years. But if smartphones are supposed to be upgraded once a year, these prices are too much.
Why are you expected to upgrade your phone every year? Because Apple makes new phones every year? Well, they also refresh their laptops and desktops as frequently.

I just treat my smartphone like my laptop: I got an iPhone 4 when it came out, and I still use it however many years later it is now.

You and I have a different idea of luxury.

Are they supposed to be upgraded once a year? I'd still be using my 5S if my mom hadn't needed a replacement phone. I see a lot of talk about "planned obsolescence" but iOS 9 is still supported and so is the iPhone 4S. If you bought it new, it'd still be supported, so 5.5 years on a phone.

I know a lot of people upgrade every year, but those who do are trading in and the more expensive the phone means the more you get in trade-in anyway.

To be clear, I don't actually upgrade once a year. Once every two years is what I've been doing since I got my first iPhone. My pattern has been to get the "S" models.

I think upgrading once a year is a bit ridiculous too. But Apple certainly liked to push it in the past; now it seems less likely with prices like these.

Most of them have had deals on launch for two years now. This is (among other reasons) why competition is a great thing.

Current flagship iphone (jet black) is US$869 (128GB) and US$969 (256 GB).
This analyst is saying iphone 8 may be between $850-900 (64GB) and $950-1000 (256 GB).

not much difference, IMO.

True. I think approaching the $1000 limit seems like it is too high.

I struggle to understand why, when a ton of great devices are available in the $300-$500 range, Apple continues to charge such steep prices and even steepens them.

Where did you get the idea they should be replaced every year? That's silly. I'm still doing fine with my iPhone 6 purchased two and a half years ago. Works fine.

See "richest company in the world", "record profits YOY" and many on this site and elsewhere gushing about how that means every decision Apple makes- good or bad for us consumers- is completely justified. ;)

If many of the Apple base would agree and switch to those $300-$500 devices, Apple would be pressured to adjust pricing to the level "the market is willing to pay." But let's face it, for all the whining about price, by the time the day gets here, you'll have people staying up all hours on one side of the planet and taking time off work on the other to try to click a "buy" button at the earliest possible opportunity. If there is going to be stock available for purchase at stores, you'll have people camping out in lines so they have a chance at "scarce" stock. Etc.

I perceive Apple could float a rumor that the top version will be $2500 and then roll them out at $1500 and people will gush at the amazing "savings..." proud they got the latest & greatest for "only $1500."

1K and above is starting to get outside of the range I want to pay for a phone.

In Canada withnthe exchange rate I've slowly gotten used to that. I remember the 4 and 4S at 649, then the 5 at 719' and eventually with the 6/6s/7 going to the Plus size and jumping to higher storage you're at $1179 before tax.

Let's be real. These haven't been phones for a long time now. They're very portable computers that can last for several years. I upgrade every year by selling the previous model for a very decent amount. But I imagine upgrading annually is very rare.
