See "richest company in the world", "record profits YOY" and many on this site and elsewhere gushing about how that means every decision that make- good or bad for us consumers- is completely justified. ;)

If many of the Apple base would agree and switch to those $300-$500 devices, Apple would be pressured to adjust pricing to the level "the market is willing to pay." But let's face it, for all the whining about price, by the time the day gets here, you'll have people staying up all hours on one side of the planet and taking time off work on the other to try to click a "buy" button at the earliest possible opportunity. If there is going to be stock available for purchase at stores, you'll have people camping out in lines so they have a chance at "scarce" stock. Etc.

I perceive, Apple could float a rumor that the top version will be $2500 and then roll them out at $1500 and people will gush at the amazing "savings..." proud they got the latest & greatest for "only $1500."
I just wish they had a 15 inch macbook for like $1500. I want the bigger screen, but the $2400 price point is insane. And I don't need a useless TouchBar

I struggle to understand why, when a ton of great devices are available in the $300-$500 range, Apple continues to charge such steep prices and even steepens them.

This. I upgraded my 6+ to one of those $400 Android units. It's faster, has better sound, a better display of the same size with more pixels, and is smaller. With a Headphone Jack. It's got it's rough edges but so does iOS. I'm genuinely impressed with the phone.

Cough - HP Spectre x360 15" - cough.

If it has to be a Mac, watch the Refurb store and buy a model that is not considered latest & greatest. Or shop other "used Mac" shops like OWC (mid 2015 with Quad i7 for $1599 right now).

I still work on a 2012 MBpro in Sierra and it does everything I need it to do. "Latest & greatest" is not always necessary for every consumer.

If it doesn't have to be a Mac, there are multitudes of Windows laptops and laptop-tablet hybrids that can be had for your price and well below it. Think through what you need a laptop to do and then how important you want to do that via Apple's OS vs. Microsoft's OS. Else, paying up for Apple is just THE way for Apple consumers. We grumble/gripe/whine/threaten/etc, but then when it comes down to buying, we buy... Apple.

Have we ever been this far out and not have any parts leak? Usually we've seen parts start to leak in December, then avalanche after that. It's April and nada.
Either phenomenal job in leak suppression, or ...as I predict, this thing isn't being released this year.

Just get a 12 month plan like Next 12 but instead of turning in the phone, pay it off the week before you order the new one. Then sell the old one after just a year of depreciation. Get 0% down on the new one with the 12 month program, then use the money for the old phone and pay off that chunk for the new phone. Then either pay the rest out of your own pocket for the phone or just continue the monthly installments. So say $900 for iPhone Plus, depreciates to $500 in a year, sell it, $500 down on a new iPhone... $400 iPhone Plus every year after making that initial investment.

Can we stop circulating the iPhone X concept photo? It reminds me of the iPhone renders back in 2006... of an iPod with a "touch" click wheel on it. I think Apple has something much more innovative to offers, which is hopefully why they're taking so long...

Its always competing... so does this automatically mean Apple will be behind still ?

Why can't us users be happy :) 6.2-inch seems way to large for me though..... but then i said the same for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus, now i have one.

Oh well. I reckon price will be a limit..... I only just managed to pay $1,000 or so..

I'll buy one for me and one for my wife!!! Even if they were $1500 a pop I will still buy it well only if they had the infinity display

Whatever version you buy, don't forget to add the Sales Tax/VAT and AppleCare Plus. That will push the cost of the next iPhone past $1000 for even the basic model, and $1200 or more for the top-of-the-line.

My question is, who would buy the 7s and 7s Plus? I hope Apple is scaling up production of the iPhone 8 (or whatever it's called) to reflect the fact that it's the only one people will order..

The days of iPhone as status symbol are over. 2007, 2008? Yeah, those were the days. Not anymore.
Quite true. Considering tweens and young teens now have the latest and greatest thanks to their parents, I laugh at anyone who suggests an iPhone or a Galaxy S are high class, status symbols.

Miss when iPhone was more exclusive felt more special, I know people will chew my head off but times were great when not everyone had an iPhone. But we have come a long way tech wise which is good.

Yet I see plenty of people on the bus system in poor areas using an iPhone 7 Plus. Not a status symbol.
True, for some, an iPhone 7 Plus can be their only computer too. While for some, it can be a status symbol from a psychological stand point of, look at me, I have the new model. I personally lust for the new stuff, but I need to understand my priorities and having each update is not gonna necessarily make my life any better. My sibling has a iPhone 5 and he said it works just fine for what he does. For a lot of people upgrading to iPhone 7, it could be the same case. We live in a world of capitalism, free markets and of course free will. So, you are free to spend how, when and on what you want.

The 256gb model price is always thrown in there to make this seem more shocking, but it is kind of meaningless. So few people buy the max size. And now that the max size is 256 the percentage of folks buying it will be even smaller. The 128 is way more space than most people need or can even really use.

You and I have a different idea of luxury.

Indeed!
However, I believe YOU to be the outlier.
Most consider the superlative of anything a "luxury". For example... we all have to eat; but if you only eat burgers from the finest ground kobe beef, that is a luxury (even though it's still "just a burger"). All babies need diapers, but if you buy your child cashmere diapers, that's a luxury- even though it still just catches doodies. We all need internet enabled communication devices in this era, though you COULD get by with a $99 Android phone- if yours is designed by the top industrial designers of our time, engineered by the topmost talented engineers, has the highest speed SSDs available w/ newly minted file system to make the most of that speed & provide the best security available on a mobile platform, etc... well then, that is a luxury!
Like in each of the other instances- you decided instead of getting by w/ what is necessary, to instead "treat yourself" to the best money can buy.
If that doesn't fit your definition of luxury... fine; I maintain that it does for most.

Everyone who can't afford an "iPhone 8", which will probably be a lot of people.

Phones are nearing obsolesence. iPad pro at least should have a multi carrier phone modem by now. Vast swaths of people rarely talk on a cell phone anymore.

Well I kept my 6s another year despite thinking that I was going to be a yearly upgrade guy. But now I'm wondering if I keep it another year. Frankly, I can afford stuff like this. But still it seems like too much when the phone is one drop or slip out of my pocket in a cab from going bye bye.

Is the iPhone still considered a "luxury" when Apple can sell 70 million of them in 3 months?

Apple is the #2 smartphone OEM in the world. At what point are iPhones simply considered "normal" ?

Man these smartphone prices are out of control. Near MacBook prices.... Get out of here. Bet they'll still sell like hot cakes.

so True, but this happens after Apple push their usable laptops to $2k range
