To hell with that - it's just a stupid phone, with more and more commoditised technology. I'd rather get a nice bicycle.

It's hardly a stupid phone, there is a lot of work stuffing all that inside the small case. If price is an issue for you, just get an old model or some cheap android, it will work fine for most usage.

I would only be buying this as a status symbol

Status symbol, lol.
I've seen people living on welfare with iPhones.
Wait a couple of months after release, get some 45€/month contract, pay 150€ upfront, congrats to your new iPhone.
Every pupil with a part-time job can afford it.

I understand laptops being expensive. I expect to keep mine for multiple years. But if smartphones are supposed to be upgraded once a year, these prices are too much.
Smartphones are not supposed to be upgraded once a year. Only 1-2% of customers update within a year. Many update after two years, and others update when their old phone breaks down, and not a minute earlier.

Remember when the rumours were that the next phone after the iPhone 6 was going to be iPhone 7. They went on and on about it then the 6S phones came out. Well, talk about history repeating itself. LOL

The iPhone has had upgrades every year, not to mention the OS. That doesn't show "limbo." It shows that you haven't really liked the upgrades.
Compared to what's been available elsewhere? Yea you must be right. OS wise, I'm fine with iPhones, and other iOS equivalents. I actually really enjoy the OS. In terms of hardware, nope. I can honestly say I'm not a fan when you consider the money vs specs these last few models compared to what competitors are releasing.

So basically the same price as my 7 plus. And what does "mainstream luxury mean". Mass produced in China + discounted often does not equal any kind of luxury.

This is getting out of hand! $1k for a phone that you replace every year! Granted you don't pay all of that usually due to payment plans and trade ins.. but still. DAMN!!!

I would only be buying this as a status symbol, considering my iPhone 6s is working just fine. Is Facebook, Twitter, Instagram going to be any better? I think not.

The days of iPhone as status symbol are over. 2007, 2008? Yeah, those were the days. Not anymore.

Every pupil can afford it on a part time job because they don't have a mortgage to pay, groceries to buy, keep the heater on on, pay for electricity (which they use to charge the device), water to bath, shower so they can go to that part time job clean and not smelling like monkey poo and not get fired from that part time job.

Said it before, will say it again, and if it happens, Apple will easily be able to price the iPhone 8 at $1K, even for the entry flash storage version ... "10-bit Display P3" capture & display is the key product attribute few are watching for, but ALL should be !

Having the latest model is still seen as a status symbol, just the same for persons carrying around a Samsung G8. For me, I have other priorities in life other than having a new matte black or jet black, like: buying food, keeping the lights on, paying for Internet, putting aside money for retirement and emergencies.

Spending $1000 is a lot of money for the vast majority of people, considering the US citizens have less than $500 in the bank because they have to live pay check to check. Some of that debt is due to desire to keep up with the Jones by having the latest and greatest gadgets and toys.

Todays Internet, consumerism and capitalism make it even more difficult for consumers to control their spending. You have YouTube videos coming from you left right and center and ad banners every where. If don't know how to set your priorities straight, you end up broke and homeless before 30.

1K and above is starting to get outside of the range I want to pay for a phone.

Then, of the MANY options you'll have when Apple brings out 3 new phones, each in at least 2 memory configurations- just don't choose the very most expensive model w/ the very highest memory configuration.
There you go. I did all that really tough thinking for you... your welcome.

Just thinking to myself.....the iPhone 8 will have older generation AMOLED technology with true tone (of course) and every fanboy will praise this through the roof
