I quoted you because your premise is wrong. The model that you claim is designed to upsell, sells better... yeah it hasn't sold better until this model. So it is a surprise. It's never happened before. Didn't happen for the first + model. Nor the second. Nor the third. Your theory doesn't work.
Because there are increasingly features that are exclusive to more expensive models. Whereas previously the disparity was less, there are now greater reasons to get more expensive “plus” model. This is not complicated. Want better camera? Have to get Plus or X. Want portrait mode? You have to get Plus or X. Want fancy lighting effects? You have to get Plus or X. Want optical stabilization, better f-stop? etc...

Back to having one model only. One Size, One Storage, One Price.

Back to Steve Jobs' Simplification. The reality is the pricing than options withholding people, 2nd-hand or older models are bringing transparency to the very fact.
Bring back the 17" MacBook, price it same as the smaller screen sizes, than look at the response. iPad Air & iPad Pro-Pra-Pre-Pru is illogical nonsense for profitary greed. In addition, just have one storage tier but of maximum capacity affordable by the technological limitations of the time, ex- the Classic iPod is classic for a reason.
If the supply chain is to be believed, Apple is doubling down on 3 phone sizes. Apparently, next year will introduce edge-to-edge successors for the SE and Plus models that will have 5.3” and 6.5” screens.

I don't miss the size of my 6 plus at all. It was super easy to adapt to the X.
Most times I prefer this smaller form factor. I'm readjusting to one-handed use. Knowing myself though, I’ll be moving up to the edge-to-edge plus size. I’d definitely want that extra screen and trade in one- handednesss all over again for it. Hopefully the rumour that next year’s plus phone will be at the current X’s price point is also true.

I wouldn't expect to see and edge to edge replacement for the SE until 2020 at the earliest. The SE may even get a spec boost before then and keep the same form factor but it will be the last iPhone to jump to OLED.

Makes sense to me

Maybe it's due to the fact that it uses a low-resolution display with interlacing. To my eyes it looks terrible. Personally, I can see the interlacing lines, and it gives me a headache, which is why I returned my iPhone 7. Too bad apple is so cheap with display resolution and refresh rates on the iPhone 7 and 8. They should have just gave it a higher resolution screen with refresh rates of the 8plus... I think it would have sold better. Customers won't buy into an obviously handicapped device.

Seems like the pluses have been gaining in popularity each cycle. The standard phone has become more niche. Moving forward I wonder if they'll even have size choices or if everything will just be X type large screen with standard size housing.

Doubt it because the human hand isn't evolving anytime soon.

As an average sized man, the standard iPhone 7 is good. I sometimes even have to double tap the home button to bring the content down and avoid thumb strain from reaching to the top corners.

The Plus units require 2 hands often, kinda bogus. Also, they make your pockets feel gross when it's in one. Both are deal breakers for me personally.

No idea what you're talking about. I love my 8. How does the 8 not fit one handed operation but the X does? That makes zero sense. I'll definitely be getting the second generation of the X next year though.

It makes perfect sense because my X fits my hand perfectly while the 8+ does not.

Not sure why everybody is saying that there will be an iPhone X Plus. I don't think it will be the case.
A X Plus is already rumored—of course that’s just a rumor. But the best argument in favor of a X Plus is made by looking at a reasonably common use case: 16:9 video in landscape mode.

With the 19.5:1 aspect ratio of the X, if you don’t zoom the content into the corner and notch areas (which would also cut off some video content at the top and bottom), the pillar boxed video is the same size as watching on a regular 16:9 aspect ratio phone with a 5.0” screen. That’s significantly smaller than the Plus’s 5.5” diagonal, actually closer to the regular 4.7” phones.

An interesting resolution for a X Plus would be 2598 x 1200. That would put the screen at 5.67” x 2.62”, with an overall diagonal of 6.2”—which matches the current rumor. It would provide an unzoomed/pillar boxed landscape video equivalent to a 5.35” diagonal (on a 16:9 display), just a bit smaller than the 8 Plus.

External dimensions would be about 6.01” x 2.96”, smaller than the 8 Plus’s 6.24” x 3.07” (it would also weigh slightly less than an 8 Plus at approx 195g) and be only marginally larger than the current X which is 5.65” x 2.79”.

"6.01” x 2.96”, smaller than the 8 Plus’s 6.24” x 3.07” (it would also weigh slightly less than an 8 Plus at approx 195g) and be only marginally larger than the current X which is 5.65” x 2.79”
Is that incl. or excl. notch dimensions ?

I think it is mostly due to the fact that for about $100 you get 2 days battery (instead of barely 1 day), dual camera and better speakers. It is a no brained to get plus model over a regular.

If they would put the same things in a smaller size phone (regular), I am quite sure, the smaller phone would sell probably even better. It is more comfy to have a smaller phone.

Would be nice to have an updated version of iPhone SE, similar to X but smaller and much cheaper. It would be a best phone

The screen real estate of the X is larger than the plus, if you cut out the notch and do a bunch of math for the curves it’s 0.7% smaller, they even say it’s the largest display Apple has ever put on a phone - I don’t know where you get your information. I don’t see the point in having a significantly larger and heavier phone to have essentially the same screen size and battery life. If anything the X should make all the plus models obsolete - but it doesn’t, which is why I’m confused. The only thing I can think of is that the $200 difference is actually a big dealbreaker for people. Or do people just like having giant cumbersome phones? I have always opted for smaller form factors so I can’t wrap my head around it.

I am currently considering swapping my 8 Plus for the X. I was basically already set on getting one until I made some in store comparisons on the weekend. The screen is noticably smaller when consuming content. When you use it in Portrait it may show more top to bottom. But that is not how our eyes work. At least don‘t hold it far enough away from my eyes to look at the whole screen when reading for example. When watching videos and photos the X also is smaller (and I don‘t even bother the notch). The width is reduced. When using non-optimized apps (16:9 screen ratio) the diagonal is just about 5 inches. That is not small. But it is quite a bit smaller than the Plus. So in most uses the Plus will give you more screen. I still prefer that it is smaller. But indeed it doesn‘t come without some trade-offs.

No. Apple will never be doomed. Apple has several iPhone lines targeting different market niches. So selling more expensive phones definitely do not cause a doomsday to Apple because the expensive phones are targeted to a separate market niche.
Did I really need to put the sarcasm tag in? Really?
[doublepost=1510582790][/doublepost]
Actually, profit margins on both phones are virtually the same due to the more costly components in the iPhone X. If anything, Apple might actually be losing money by not selling as many iPhones in general :D
Their guidance says no.

omg! am i the only one who wants smaller phone? eg. 4" iPhone ?

iPhone 4s was the best phone. The size, the weight, I miss that true 1 hand usage. If they would make a “mini series” in the 4s size, I would definitely buy one immediately. That and new iPad mini, once they bother to update it.

This is a really sad reality in Apple right now. Anything “mini” was very popular and so they have stopped upgrading it so people stop buying it and then they stop making it completely. Mini was the best iPad ever

The news is totally expected. The iPhone 8 has 4 year old designs with minimal tweaks from iPhone 7. No reason to upgrade to 8 if customers have 7, even 6s. From 6, sure, due to some changes. Overall, the 8 is not a game changer.

X, however, is the true upgrade from all previous phones due to radical design and technology. X is the superb iPhone in the iPhone history.
I have a 6 (128) and I'm in no rush to get an 8 or X. I can drag this one for at least another year until X matures and the first Gen. issues are sorted out.

The 4.7 should be the new SE.
please no. Don't ruin the only one handed phone they offer.
[doublepost=1510586998][/doublepost]
Why can’t you operate the 8 with one hand? It’s one of the smallest smartphones on the market.
I never could. I had a 6s for a while. too slippery and large for one handed use. Went to the SE and have never looked back. I love its usability.

If they give the SE the “X” treatment there is really no need for the 8 size. I doubt they would call it the SEX, though. :)

Going back to the issue of Plus vs Regular on the 8, i has a regular 6S, and neither the 7 or 8 were that compelling; the 7+ and 8+ were.

Presumably you don't sit 6 inches away from your television, though.
You sit a distance that would make the screen fill up about the same amount of your view. Anyway, point is people can't discern 1920x1080 vs 1280x720 at normal viewing distance on a phone of that size, if the "retina" claim is true.

* Bluetooth 5.0 vs. 4.2 (4x range, 2x transfer speed, supports 2 devices simultaneously, better audio)

Bluetooth 3 onward could handle 2 devices simultaneously; how else do you think the 5SE/6/6S/7 can support BT stereo headphones and the Apple Watch S2 Nike+ ?

If you’re speaking to audio BT playback to 2 devices, can you prove that with two different audio products NOT made by the same manufacturer?

Quite understandable a lot of people prefer the big phone. Customers who wanted a normal size iPhone waited for the X, and big size fans decided for the 8 Plus.
