First off as an X user i can say i don’t miss Touch ID in the slightest. Face ID is way superior imo. Secondly we are talking about a few bucks more a month for payment on the X over the 8. When it comes down to it. You pay $3-4 dollars more for a superior product is a no brained.

I actually buy outright , so I don't justify items as being only x more per y period. I just compare the retail value. And one is around 1/3 more, and you pay for that "superior" difference, it's quite a price difference.

I do miss the wider screen of the 7 Plus, but not enough to downgrade.

Downgrade? A 7 plus is clearly an upgrade from the iPhone X, which I see as an iPhone mini consumer non pro, non heavy user phone. It even fails on media consumption (notch in landscape), and the screen is so narrow. I would say a 6s Plus is an upgrade from iPhone X.

I will say this once... once Apple released Iphone SE2 say full front screen no bezels.. it will be best phone on market ....

Seems like the pluses have been gaining in popularity each cycle. The standard phone has become more niche. Moving forward I wonder if they'll even have size choices or if everything will just be X type large screen with standard size housing.
While not everybody prefers the bigger screen of the plusses, some simply choose the plus-sized units for the longer battery life, and especially in the case of the 7 and 8, the better camera also.

I’d take iPhone X technology with original iPhone case dimensions if that was on offer.

It will stop only when people stop buying phones for those prices. They're pushing what the market will bear. There will always be some who will buy expensive products, but in appealing to _only_ those people, Apple will increasingly become a "niche" manufacturer aimed at wealthy buyers.
Apple also sells the iPhone 5SE and the iPhone 6s for considerably less money.

Face ID may work, but wooot it is slow. Could not live with it. Seems like 1990.
Hmm. Interesting.
For me, there is no perceptible delay. At all. I literally pick up my device and swipe up and I’m on the home screen. The authentification happens instantly. Completely invisible. At first, I didn’t think it was working. That’s how immediate it works.

Compare that to my Touch ID experience (iPhone 6) where about 30% of the time a passcode was required.

There are definitely pros/cons to both authentification methods. Yesterday I discovered that a pair of my spare shades, which are more or less mirrored, require passcode to unlock 100% of the time. Fortunately, my regular sunglasses work fine with Face ID. All things considered, I find Face ID a much better, more intuitive authentification experience. I’ve been happy with it and now prefer it over Touch ID.
Obviously, YMMV.

I don’t think you become a trillion dollar company on only niche. Doing so requires mass adoption on a scale we’ve never seen. Taking whatever emotion and longing for days past off the table - it’s pretty remarkable to think that 2 anti-establishment, punk kids started all of this in a garage. Staggering to ponder.

The iPhone 8 was a really lame update. Only big differences were wireless charging and being heavier and more fragile than the 7 and not offering the 128GB option. If given a choice between the two, I'd easily buy the 7 and pocket the extra money.

Though I much prefer the size of the SE, I didn't want to hold my breath long enough for Apple to release an updated model. So I got the 8, and so far I'm happy with it. It's a bit bigger than I'd like; if Apple got rid of its forehead and chin, it would be the perfect size for me. I'm assuming bezel-less displays will gradually be deployed for all models. But until then, I'm satisfied with the iPhone few apparently want.

Glad someone else is happy with the 8. Macrumours makes me feel like a second-class citizen because I have the 8, the ‘troll of the iPhones’. :(

I just want the SE with newer components. The bigger screen sizes make the keyboard too big to type on with one hand. What ever happened to Apple saying that 4" is the perfect size for single-hand use? Our hands are still the same sizes.

I'm surprised by the large number of people that say the price is so much more than the iPhone 8 Plus that it's just a ridiculous price.
$800 versus $1000 that's a 20% difference.
Let's see, if a cup of coffee was $1.00 versus $1.20, would they even think that it was 20% more?

Would people rather have a cheaper flip phone, a separate camera, a separate game boy, a separate tablet for web browsing and emails, a separate GPS with maps for navigation, a separate music player, etc.

Are they just trolls, or are these real people that have no idea of how much amazing technology they are getting for $1000?
$1000 is 25% more than $800, not 20%. I don't even get what the coffee analogy is supposed to say anyway. And all the features you listed are available on the 8.

That's a false equivalence. $200 is very different from 20 cents even if the proportion is the same.
But it's about the same if you buy the coffee every day and treat it as $1.20 X ~365days/year * 2years/phone-update. Except most people don't do that calculation.

Also it has Touch ID. Also doesn't look like a Samsung phone. But doesn't the X let you play videos without it going all the way to the ears and having the notch problem?

So why did you quote me? It is not a surprise that the model designed to upsell sells better. Apple is increasingly using exclusive features to upsell customers.
I quoted you because your premise is wrong. The model that you claim is designed to upsell, sells better... yeah it hasn't sold better until this model. So it is a surprise. It's never happened before. Didn't happen for the first + model. Nor the second. Nor the third. Your theory doesn't work.

Is this serious? You know the screen real estate of iPhone X is a lot smaller than 8+? You know that iPhone X is a mini phone? Longer yes, but too narrow to be even close to a phablet. In my view the iPhone X is obsolete. Too small screen these days (unless you primarily use iPad). Would even pay a few hundred dollars more for an 8+.
The screen real estate of the X is larger than the plus, if you cut out the notch and do a bunch of math for the curves it’s 0.7% smaller, they even say it’s the largest display Apple has ever put on a phone - I don’t know where you get your information. I don’t see the point in having a significantly larger and heavier phone to have essentially the same screen size and battery life. If anything the X should make all the plus models obsolete - but it doesn’t, which is why I’m confused. The only thing I can think of is that the $200 difference is actually a big dealbreaker for people. Or do people just like having giant cumbersome phones? I have always opted for smaller form factors so I can’t wrap my head around it.

Ming-Chi Kuo's track record isn't perfect, but are we forgetting how many iPhone X details he revealed?
From this article:
  • No Touch ID
  • "Full-screen design" (highest screen-to-bezel ratio of any smartphone)
  • Notch
  • Facial recognition (aka Face ID)
  • Improved selfies (aka front-facing Portrait Mode)
  • 64GB and 256GB storage
  • Improved stereo speakers/earpiece
That's not even everything…

"Highest screen to body ratio of any smartphone."

Screen to body ratio
Apple iPhone X
81.49%
LG V30 83.24%
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 82.63%

Wait till iPhone X Plus next year though...
I agree with this comment. I am able to make a choice independent of cost. My company is paying for the device. I eliminated the 7 because why bother for the small savings over an 8, I eliminated the X for a combination of reasons.
1: New designs and likely growing pains ( Already appearing online)

2: The package size is the same as the current 8 and I find the smaller version to small

3: I went with the 8 Plus and frankly I love it. I would make the move to the X when they come out with the Plus size and have worked through the new product quality control issues.

This is confusing to me - why get an 8+ when you can get an X instead? The 8+ has a smaller screen and a more cumbersome form factor, lower resolution, slightly worse camera and worse contrast ratio for a similar price.

Are people just that uninformed? Or is the $200 difference that significant?

I get buying a regular 8 (though I would just get a 7 if I was trying to save money) but the 8+ seems inferior to the X in every way possible.
8+ has a bigger screen with bigger aspect ratio and longer battery life.

Those other smartphones were unveiled months after Kuo's prediction. Even if he was wrong about that, it doesn't take away from my overall point. He nailed the X.

One question, the lack of home button, faceid is not my issue, was that a gradual transition for you or quick? I still miss the home button for navigation.

Took me about 5 seconds. Now my iPhone 6 work phone is odd man out ;)

Dude, stop drinking the kool aid. At most you could say that FaceID works about 80-90% as good as touchID. FaceID is fine, but it definitely fails a LOT more than touchID. And it doesnt work in normal situations like lying sideways in bed, grabbing the phone off the nightstand, and trying to unlock it. 100% fail rate with faceID.

FaceID is a cool novelty, but is worse for actually real life usability. Coming from a guy who has had 3 iPhoneX's and now went for the superior in every way iPhone 8+.

To be fair, ruka.snow finds the FaceID being better than TouchID. That's his opinion just like you being subjective and finding the iPhone 8+ as superior in every way. His opinion doesn't indicate that he is drinking the kool aid, :D

Not sure why everybody is saying that there will be an iPhone X Plus. I don't think it will be the case.

You never know.

Considering there is the iPhone X, there is no point in the 8 or 8 plus. I think apple should drop the 8 and just offer the X. maybe pull the 6S, 7 and 8 and also the SE and just offer one phone.

Whack the price unto $1500 and people will still buy it as most are on contract.
