The big question is how much of that screen space is usable by apps. The top right and left may be status indicators and/or clock - though there's not much room for those. And the bottom may have a virtual bezel for home and navigation icons.

Apple is WAYYYY too in the media industry to allow any cutouts or other weird screen shapes that'll disrupt a native viewing experience. Any phone maker who does it, doesn't care about viewing media.

I THINK I WILL WAIT IPHONE 9 IN 2018 OR WHATEVER IT IS CALLED.

APPLE'S FIRST VERSIONS ARE ALWAYS BAD....: MACBOOK RETINA PROBLEMS, IPHONE 4 ANTENNAGATE...

They just get it right the next year....and screens changes are big....I bet there will be problems.

also it will be hell until stocks settle....and that'll happen only next year, in time for a new phone...so...

Just a render, but eliminating the crappy iPhone 6+, 6S+, 7+ bezels on a large screened device is a must.

I agree, I see no purpose for the two left overs at both sides, besides for the battery, time and connection status

It wouldn't surprise me if it would work something like this:

Or this:

Either something in iOS 11 changes with the status bar or maybe some new functionality will be introduced to fill up the screen parts next to the camera.

I recall Apple having a patent for hiding the front facing camera behind the screen. I think this is what we might see - the camera will become visible when in use, and somehow blend into the display when it is not needed. No way is Apple going to make the same mistake the Essential phone did.

This wil not happen. The patent you are referring to is many years old and is just a theoretical solution. Just look how bad front facing cameras are right now and then try to imagine a screen in front of it. The tech is not ready for this yet. And even if it was, the screen part were the camera is would need to be able to turn transparent, so that part of the screen would be of a lower quality than the rest of the screen. It's not a solution for now or the next year sadly.

For me, it typically the back side that makes or break it (insert joke here).
Since that and the sides are where you can be more creative with materials, cameras etc.
The front not so much, as you don't want to take away from the experience with the screen.

That upper ^^^^^^^^ camera and earpiece grill cutout from display looks ugly to be honest. Hope Apple never make it like that.

Never liked the rear touch id :D

The rumors seemingly believe Touch ID will be embedded in the display and will not have Touch ID on the back of the iPhone.

Furthermore, most want to see reduced bezels and more display. It seems this will be the year We might see a 5.5 disay into a 4.7 device, which will keep the iPhone in a smaller form factor . This is actually setting up to be a nice iPhone with the home button integration and edge to edge Display.

So we've pretty much established they're putting a 5.5" screen in a device roughly the same size as the previous 4.7" devices.

What I would like them to make is one step down from that. A 4.7" screen in a device roughly the same size as the previous 4" devices. "iPhone Edition SE"

This please.

No wonder they abandoned the iPad mini - next iphone 8+ will have similiar screen.
Please.
Of course MR people are going to complain anyway.
Doesn't have bezels => the cutout
Has bezels => the bezels
Interesting to see the reaction of people that were criticising the iPhone for having "humongous bezels", and now the iPhone will have the least bezels of any phone… are they buying an iPhone now?
No, we just want smaller bezels - for only 5 years now.
No new cutouts, camera bulbs, antenna bands, or ergonomic abberations.
Anything like this will do: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-7-and-galaxy-s8.2047873/page-3#post-24623333
The whole industry has changed, since Apple's last look out of the window
(and oh, if Samsung imitated them in advance, just sueue them into their Korean roofs)

I'm starting to wonder if the 7 and 7 Plus will stick around with the A10 and then the '8' sits above them with an A11 and other new hardware. Hmm.
Why yes, yes it will. Apple always puts their best hardware in their most expensive phone to encourage you to upgrade to the top price point. It's genius, but BS.

I'm a little confused. Are the rumors at this point that there will only be one size with the 8?

I had been considering going down to the standard size with this next upgrade from my 6s Plus. My only hesitation has been any features the Plus might get that could be left off of a smaller version. I think with the 7 and 7 Plus it was only something with the camera and battery life, unless I am mistaken.

looks comfortable to hold in landscape when you're in the bed watching youtube videos

The 7 Plus looks ridiculous in comparison, bigger case with smaller display

I don't like the cutout on the top, it would look weird when displaying full size content. I'd rather have a small bezel on the top to include camera and sensors

Would it? The content wouldn't be past the cutout. It would still be a rectangle. They could just keep the battery and wireless indicators visible or something. Not saying I think Apple has done that, just that it doesn't seem like a disaster if they did.

The Essential phone by Android creator Andy Rubin has a cutout at the top of the screen. It has had a positive reception to the looks.

Considering the bezel on the bottom it would look nice just to lower the screen and put the camera on top.
But I have no idea on the engineering of the phone.

Andy Rubin on stage at the Code Conference last night made some decent remarks about the camera location. Also mentioned that when viewing 16:9 video the space on either side of the camera go black and the screen is long enough to display full 16:9 without the top area near the camera.

How accurate are those leaks? I remember last year the same render being touted. Edge to edge can also mean just the sides only and not the entire front panel.
