They need the space for the battery ...
Make it thicker then. Somehow Apple was able to manufacture much smaller-sized phones with perfectly reasonable battery life in the past. Has the advantage of making the phone more difficult to bend as well.

I cringe every time I see renders like this one. Do people really think Apple is going to put an asymmetrical screen on an iPhone?

It's an OLED display so even if it looks like this, they can make the top black to match the 'lip' and still put battery, carrier, etc. info in. And if they were concerned about summetry they could add a similar function/info bar to the bottom.

OMG that cutout is worse than a (small) bezel
That's just the look of the hardware, but the software will hide the 'lip' with black space on the sides occupied with battery, carrier and other info.

There's no way the iPhone will have 0 bezels, it's just not possible or desirable. You couldn't hold the phone without touching or covering the screen.

I doubt this... All the rumors suggesting this and zero rumors to something resembling a brick type phone.

We already have the SE for that. Plus the rumors are a 'one sided' if its supposed to be even.

There is NO way that those ugly ears/handles up top will be any other color than black with carrier and other info like that on top. This is actually genius since right now that info on our current iPhones is taking up screen real estate if you look at it. By doing this Apple is essentially giving us even MOAR screen! Win/win. Now I do believe they will make it even and add a small bezel on the bottom as well. The screen won't go all the way down like that. Save this comment folk ;)

I'd rather have a small bezel at the top and bottom instead of that cutout portion at the time for the camera and speaker. Is that simply going to be a blank area for apps, games and movies or will there be a virtual border there?

Nevertheless, it otherwise looks great and I'll probably get one.

If this becomes true, I'm looking forward to Rene Ritchie at iMore calling out Apple on their lack of symmetry.

I wouldn't be surprised if they end up going with that cutout up top. I'd prefer that over the samsung bottom and top thin bezels. I just hope the sides have more of squared off approach like the 5's design rather than the rounded sides of the 6 and 7.

The 7 Plus looks ridiculous in comparison, bigger case with smaller display

I don't like the cutout on the top, it would look weird when displaying full size content. I'd rather have a small bezel on the top to include camera and sensors

If the cutout is true, I'd imagine Apple would use the left and right areas for status information. When you play a video, you'll get black bars at the top and bottom for a symmetrical look that'll fit 16:9 videos.

However, I'm not exactly sure how non video apps will work in landscape mode.

I'm a fan of it being shorter than the SG8 but would prefer it be less wide. Hopefully iPhone 8 will to be closer to a 16:9 ratio instead of going with an extra long screen (which seems like a waste of space. I like having as little in my pocket as possible.

Oh, No :(

And this was the device aligning up with my iPhone purchase cycle. Me no want.

The only reason for the 7S and 7S Plus to exist is price. Otherwise who wouldn't want a big screen on a small phone?

I expect the iPhone X to start at $869. $100 more than the base model 7S Plus.

So we've pretty much established they're putting a 5.5" screen in a device roughly the same size as the previous 4.7" devices.

What I would like them to make is one step down from that. A 4.7" screen in a device roughly the same size as the previous 4" devices. "iPhone Edition SE"
I've been saying this for years. That would be my dream phone. I think something slightly wider and a bit shorter than the current iPhone SE that is all display is the ultimate phone. I guess it depends on what aspect ratio we end up with on this new iPhone Edition or whatever, but I don't see any need to make the display elongated like some of these renders do, but maybe they have some kind of Touch Bar type functionality.

That upper ^^^^^^^^ camera and earpiece grill cutout from display looks ugly to be honest.Apple will never make it like that.

In comparison with Bezel less model iPhone 7 Plus looks so bulky and outdated with those massive bezels

"Applesuppliers TSMC confirmed Apple had successfullyintegrated Touch ID fingerprint recognition into the OLED display." :- Macrumors Said

This will be huge win win for me. Never liked the idea of rear touch id :D
Yeah that weirdly shaped screen is not going to be a thing. It's not balanced with the rest of the phone at all and we all know that Jony Ive would burn out the bearings on every one of his exquisitely machined aluminium fidget spinners over that tragedy...

Now that the OCD guys is gone, why not? Not that I like doing it in this particular case.
I agree, and it would' t have to be assymetrical, that part/corners of the screen could always be black and have carrier info, Bluetooth , WiFi, etc info on it, you won' t even see that it is a part of the mainscreen, except that it will have letters and signs in white on it. It is brilliant, it will give more real usable screen area and will give you the impression that it is an all screen iphone.

Apple would never have useless screen space that runs up and around the camera cutouts.

Anyone who thinks that is what it will look like is on a different planet.

What the hell is this crap?

*glares at bezel bulge*

I don't forsee this type of design with Apple with the bezel bulge at all. It's not traditional and it doesn't seem like that would fall in line with their design pattern over the years with the iPhone. I highly doubt this seems realistic to me. It's just another render to throw in the pile and ultimately wait for more reported iPhone leaks.
