Alleged "iPhone 8" leaks have been coming fast and steady over recent weeks, with various schematics and protective case designs suggesting Apple has finalized the radical redesign destined for its tenth anniversary smartphone.

Many of the leaks we've been tracking in the last few days in particular offer few if any details beyond what we've already heard about Apple's upcoming OLED iPhone, but a couple of renders are making the rounds online that may give readers a clearer idea of how the new handset might look alongside current smartphones on the market.

In the above renders, originally published by iDrop News, an "iPhone 8" with edge-to-edge display is shown set in between Apple's existing iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The new handset is expected to be 144mm tall, 71mm wide, and 7.7mm thick, according to leaked design renderings and schematics. They compare to existing iPhone 7 dimensions of 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1mm.

Another render, pictured below, shows the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone in between the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Samsung's devices measure 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0mm and 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1mm, respectively. Taken together, the above numbers suggest Apple's redesigned handset will be slightly thicker than the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 but not as thick as the Galaxy S8.

The last major rumor about the so-called "iPhone 8" came last week, when it was reported that Apple suppliers TSMC confirmed Apple had successfully integrated Touch ID fingerprint recognition into the OLED display.

The new handset is expected to release in the fall alongside upgraded "S" cycle versions of Apple's existing line-up. Other features for the high-end phone could include a front-facing dual-lens camera with 3D sensing capabilities and some form of wireless charging.

I wish! No way the top/bottom bezels will be that small, no way. Otherwise it already looks much better than the S8 simply because it doesn't have the curved edges. I hope the rumors are not true that the iPhone 8 will be 18.5:9 aspect ratio, that will ruin the screen IMO.

If I were to guess, Apple will probably not have the screen area now occupied by the bezel as part of the running application interface, but instead mostly reserved for iOS use.

The top will probably have a black bar across with phone status icons flanking the cutout showing battery and radio status.

The way iOS has always worked, you need to have a home button at the bottom center to return to the home screen or switch apps. I don't see Apple changing that. I think they'll mostly reserve the center bottom for the virtual home screen button or other OS purposes instead of being part of the running application's main screen.

Perhaps that area could be an iOS version of a MacBook's touch bar that can be utilized by apps, but keeping the center position unused as the virtual home button. I suppose the keyboard could also take up that space when needed, giving more room for the application's interface.

Another possibility is to use the area to flash notifications without interfering with the application's display.

There's no way the iPhone will have 0 bezels, it's just not possible or desirable. You couldn't hold the phone without touching or covering the screen.

It is possible and it is desirable. Who wouldn't want a smaller device that still has a big screen and is easy to hold? As for touching the edges, Apple has already proven they have excellent edge rejection. This complaint was brought up when they shrunk the bezels on the iPad and it was a non-issue. Apple isn't dumb.

That bezel free design may be a tad aggressive. I don't see Apple having a cutout in the display for camera and speaker as that would likely cut off the top of any apps being used too. I would look for at least a decent bezel on the top which would cover the area the logic board is housed along with something on the bottom where the speakers and lightning port are at. The top and bottom edges of the display will likely be at the same height the rounding of the corners ends which would allow for a perfectly rectangular display area.

It looks beautiful. If they came out with that and integrated the fingerprint sensor in the display - they'll have issues tamping down demand even at the $1k starting price. JMHO...

That's the key factor for most...where will Apple map the Touch ID sensor. I'm confident it will be under the display. With the right Form factor (Including the display) and Touch ID executed under the display, the demand will be off the charts and Apple knows it.

I created a rough mockup of how I think they're gonna do the notification bar, which is basically stacking it. Seems plausible.

Thanks for the mockup. I think it'll be the all black status bar.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember seeing the status bar with scrolling text in the current iPhone if the carrier name is too long. We may see something like that in the new iPhone.

The top bezel notch out is FUGLY AS FUG. If Apple does that I'll have to pass and consider other options. It's jarring to start at that and it looks like a sticker/screen protector that needs peeling off especially with a black bezel. A white bezel might work...sorta? Would be REALLY cool If Apple has figured out how to have the screen wrap totally around the openings like they are drilled through.

That upper ^^^^^^^^ camera and earpiece grill cutout from display looks ugly to be honest.Apple will never make it like that.

In comparison with Bezel less model iPhone 7 Plus looks so bulky and outdated with those massive bezels

This will be huge win win for me. Never liked the idea of rear touch id :D
This exactly. Those "wings" that the display has are laughable. Nothing is coming out of Apple looking like that.

Phil at intro: " Introducing the Iphone 8 Ledge". Nah. Not going to happen. 99 out of 100 focus groups disliked the cutout. ( Source: I made it up )

I find it so hilarious how everyone makes a big deal about the S8's missing bezels, and then even on Samsung's own promotional screenshots the bent edges are clearly visible to not be anything else but an unusable edge of at least similar width to the iPhone 7's bezels.

It's been rumored that it will have that cutout and it looks fugly. Why can't Apple make a perfect phone?

I've held the Samsung Galaxy 8 and 8+ and gotta say that the narrower width really helps a ton. Yes it makes for a much taller aspect ratio, but I'd prefer that if given a choice. Kinda bummed that the iPhone 8 looks like it's shaping up to be wider than the Samsungs. The 8+ has a giant screen but was extremely easy to hold and use.

As for the iPhone 8's bezel's I'll believe them when I see them.

The 7 Plus looks ridiculous in comparison, bigger case with smaller display

I don't like the cutout on the top, it would look weird when displaying full size content. I'd rather have a small bezel on the top to include camera and sensors
I wouldn't be opposed to this earpiece cutout but only if the left and right part of the screen that goes around it was only used for the status bar. Battery level on the right and cell/wifi on the left. Maybe then you would still get the feel of a normal screen but always have that info available and visible.

I do not see them getting ride of the chin and forhead, look at the ipad and macbook pros - they all still have massive forhead and chin. Bezels but he sides get trimmed by micromm's. Competitors have always copied them but S8 plus is the only one to push it's own design boundary. The current renders for the next phone all look really too liberal, more liberal than they ever created or will ever create. That's why you always have to look to Samsung to push boundaries in design.

I agree it looks really bad. I think it should be clean and simple:

Just because Apple has screen up there next to the ear piece, doesn't mean it's going to be used to display content. I see this leak being pretty accurate, and totally something Apple would do. That top screen portion will be reserved for status bar, perfectly black, blending software with the hardware. Totally an Apple move.

So it will be like a thin bezel that can also display information, leaving more real estate for content.

Lol? Yea, lol. I thought you might have been joking for a second. What boundaries did Samsung push in design? They copied the design architecture of the iPhone 4, the very same architecture that was mocked endlessly by samsung and other competitors as being too fragile with glass on the back, and boneheaded with external antennas engineered into the enclosure. Something that has never been done before "for very good reasons, it's a bad idea" was the gist of it.

They took that architecture, and then tried to pre-empt an iPhone rumor that has been rumored for over a year now, and did it only half way. They narrowed the bezels, they didn't go fully bezel-free like the iPhone leaks are predicting. I fail to see any boundaries being pushed in design.

How so? The cut out is to make room for the camera/sensor.

Doing it like this, without display, is just ugly. I think the screen will be on top of the camera - and the tiny bit above the camera will become transparent when you take a photo. Perhaps a bit more to prevent light from entering the camera.

That is NOT edge to edge!

Still so thick a side bezel.
Probably copied from a Samsung phone.
