and you're going to leave what amounts to over 20 hours of 4k video on your phone forever, and not move it anywhere else? If that's your storage strategy then no amount of memory will ever suffice.

Lots of people actually shoot professionally on iPhone these days, as a second shooter or even as primary camera. You don't always have time to download and edit immediately.

Liking the sudden relative generosity with storage tiers after so many years of 16gb base storage :D Especially if the previous rumour of moving to 64/256 on the regular models also pans out (it'd make sense to drop the top tier from the 7s/ 7s+ to push people towards the new oled phone, I guess?)

Who needs ****in 256GB or even 512GB in a smartphone?
Even some of new MacBooks got less that that!
I still have more than enough with my iPhone SE 16GB.
Never needed more.

Those people who transfer ALL music to their iPhones are SICK.
Why dont you just stream? Use Apple Music, use amazon prime, soundcloud whatever!
I wonder why people still download instead of streaming.
And with the iCloud and other clouds, nobody needs to save all the stuff local on the phone.
Just backup in the cloud all of your ****in photos, videos, music whatever.

That’s fair. I think that’s why we have an entry level storage option as well as much higher storage capacities, apparently.

I’m thinking we are at a point where people just can’t be happy though. A year ago today, the base model was 1/8 the size of what we are supposedly getting with this next phone. That was painful, especially compared to the competition. But this? I can agree with Apple on this one. Making sure everyone who buys the phone can store multiple hours of 4K video at a time is just a foolish move, talking business. Those who need the extra storage can get it. And laying an additional $200 for roughly 450gb of soace seems like a fine deal to me.

iOS 11 will compress using H.265, and as Apple stated, it will save up to 50% of the storage space.
I’m using ios11 currently and basing my numbers off of that. Unless it’s different in the new hardware the numbers should be accurate.

Of course this is 4K 30fps

I stream now but only because I don’t pay for it (in on a friends acxount). If I had to pay $10 a month to stream music I’d gladly fork over the extra cash for local storage.

I used to pay for iTunes Match but when they dumped radio I felt the value was no longer there either.

I do feel that the number of people wanting to keep entire libraries stored locally has greatly reduced though. I remember when a 64gb iPod was entire library material lol.

Data caps.

And from where I sit, anyone who can live in 16GB (a significant portion of which goes to the OS) is SICK. Ever play a game? Many of the deep ones are well over a GB in size. How about movies? Streaming is great, but sometimes I'm on a train or plane and that doesn't work.

I've always gotten the top storage option, and I always fill it up. My phone is my favorite computer and there's always something to do on it.

It's great for you that you can live in the cloud.

I hate it when people spout "cloud storage" as the answer to everything. Not everyone has unlimited data plans or the desire to wait for data to transfer from the cloud when they want it. Some may not even want any of their data in the cloud.

Here in Switzerland we have 4G+ everywhere, doesnt matter on the top of a snowy mountain, tunnel or in the city. The cloud is ultra fast.
In 2 years we get 5G and download/upload with 10Gbit/s.
Who will need 512GB or 1TB memory then?

3.5 Hours + H.265 = Up to 4 hours and 54 minutes
I am on iOS 11 public beta 6

Apple is estimating 350 megabytes per minute recording 4K at 30fps.

I actually get 3.04 hours at that rate

What am I missing? Is h.265 only newer hardware? Not implemented yet? Apples own estimating is off?

Amazing! This is literally a super computer in your pocket, more storage than a MacBook Pro!

If people don’t buy the product in acceptable quantities it will not longer be produced. I hear what you’re saying but you’re conflating your own needs to the rest of the world.

As has been mentioned already, people who do a lot of video recording may want to consider higher capacities. That’s not me, but I’m also not dismissing this as a valuable upgrade for those who’s needs fit the bill.

If you're recording 4K video, you could easily fill up the 64gb (less than that in actual usage space) really quickly

Very true, but to call 64GB (especially as the base storage) "barely passable" is a little ridiculous. I didn't hear moaning and complaining when LG or the Pixel launched with 32GB as base or even when the S8 launched with 64GB. Can we not overreact just because it's Apple?

My 2 cents: I get just over an hour of 4K ProRes422 footage on my Blackmagic camera with a 512GB SSD. I'm sure the 4K iPhone files will come out smaller than Blackmagic based on variable bit rates, codecs etc but for people thinking 512GB will get you a whole day's worth of recording, 4K isn't as innocent as you might think. :) I only backup my H.264 renders so the cloud storage angle isn't too bad unless you want to backup absolutely everything.

They won’t do that until most people have a 256GB model as they know the chances of people downgrading are low. And once again Schiller can say you get 4x the storage for only $100 more.
This thread is an example of people always thinking they deserve more. As I mentioned earlier just a year ago (as of today) we had 1/8 the storage on a base model. Then the 7 came out and that is 1/2 this supposed base. And people are still complaining this isn’t enough.

I think you’ve seen enough posts from me to know that I’m almost never defending Apple but these complaints are just getting silly now.

We need 1TB. 512GB is not enought when you can record 4K videos and Live Photos.
If Apple can't offer more space they have to offer unlimited space for iCloud to store videos and photos like Google with their Android phones.
