Waste of money, time and resources. By the time I get my phone out of the pocket, it's already unlocked. No need to look at it at all.
Agreed. I think TouchID embedded within the screen would be the best evolution.

Off topic, but that mock up looks so good. I didn't know the screen would holographically displays some of the blue dust outside of the screen

So, in the future, can I buy stuff without even 1-click or a touch id - just staring something on Amazon? Great.

A lot of questions about functionality and security but most of all does this make the lock screen notifications obsolete? If you just have to look at your phone and it unlocks then you never get a chance to read your notification. You'd have to pull them down. If so then facial recognition doesn't necessarily add any convenience and could actually hinder it.

For me, of all the improvements I can think the iPhone could use, unlocking is not one of them. I remain interested to see if this is actually implemented and if its a 1:1 substitute for the fingerprint sensor.

-said the person who hadn't even tried it yet... like SO many other blabbing naysayers about apple tech before it's a global hit. whyoncha save ya breath, huh?

Even if it were relatively instant (and this type of tech has never before been close to instant), it still would be horribly annoying to have to lift the phone up to your face just to unlock it. I frequently unlock the phone laying flat on my desk.

Do I have to take my glasses off for it to work? Do I have to hold up to my face or will it work at an angle that is more natural for holding phone?

If the answer is yes for either of those questions then it's not intuitive and I'm not interested.

I think the point of the eye recognition is just the opposite. It will authenticate but not bypass the lockscreen, just like today when you raise-to-wake and then touch your thumb to the home button without pressing. This will make notifications and widgets more useful because you will automatically be authenticated the moment you look at them. That means you can interact with them or use them to launch directly into apps without ever putting your thumb near the home button. It's a huge reduction in friction.

you don't have to use it

it's an option.

Except everyone, whether they want it or not, has to pay for it to be included. There was already an article saying how the iPhone 8 price might be higher because of all the expensive new technology. No thanks.

When I had my note 7..it did work with glasses...do some research first ..
Sunglasses? I doubt that...

Someone commits an act of violence, he/she kills themselves and they unlock their phone by attempting a selfie.

This is one feature that I did not care for on the Note 8. The fingerprint scanner is more than enough.

What Apple should do is make the entire display a fingerprint reader, get rid of the home button and use force touch. Because right now I forget that force touch is even there so why not put it to greater use.

Totally agree. However this clip from the post made me smile:

"... the "iPhone 8" could include facial or gesture recognition technology powered by a laser sensor and an infrared sensor located near the front-facing camera. The feature could allow users to control their devices with simple gestures for tasks..."

LOL! Why? I know the finger gesture I would give to Siri.

Now how much is this all going to cost? $1000 for 32gb and $1200 for 128gb?

I read that faking out a fingerprint scanner takes some specialized knowledge/skills....I'm wondering if an iris scanner would merely require an image of someone's eye in order to unlock.

People want a new iPhone and then complain when rumored features are being implemented... I don't understand. Shooting down an idea and complain about it already. Don't you get tired of doing this??

I know Google has something where they try to read your specific body movements to confirm that it is you and it will unlock the phone without you having to input a password/pin/fingerprint.

I would think that Apple will implement iris scanning similarly. It's one of many ways to confirm it's you. Maybe you pick up the iPhone and you it doesn't completely register your print, it'll scan your eyeball and you'll bypass the lock screen.

Or even more, how about having this as a better way to lock down your phone. Input your print and iris if it's been a sleeping for a while. And if it takes place of your iTunes passphrase, it's worth it alone.

Does this work in low light conditions too? Anyway if the front becomes all screen I'm happy. Those big bezels are yesterday news.

At least Apple always gives you the option if you want to use these features; I am more likely to trust them with this kind of data than other companies, personally I won't be using it though.

This kind of data? What your eye? Why, even if someone were to steal the data, tell me what other bits of information that you have protected by retinal scans. None? Thought not. So apart from your phone that is on your person. It's fairly harmless.

# paranoid much?
