We'll have the 8, the 8+ and the iPhad 8. :D

Me, I want a flagship 4" phone....make a cheap C for markets that you need a cheaper phone, but give us a no-compromise 4" iPhone 8 (not gonna happen - but it SHOULD).
I love the functionality of the Plus, but damn if it isn't too big for me!

An iris scanner was one thing I hoped apple would never bother with because it just doesn't seem as convenient as the touch id does specially if using apple pay since you would look pretty silly leaning forward getting close to the phone while holding the phone within nfc range of the eftpos machine.

Shockingly, all those "there will be a 7S I promise you" devotees have gone missing...

Seems like a waste. Why would you want the extra step rather than just using your finger? And if you really are James Bond, carrying government secrets, why not just add an obscure security code. There aren't enough people with these concerns to warrant using the already limited space inside the phone to include this.

They do it because they know there are more than a few people who want these sort of superfluous perks.

It also helps justify increasing the price point :/

What if you live in a cold climate and have gloves on?

What if you are working and your hands are dirty?

What if you hop out of the pool or shower and you have wet fingers?

I can understand the working and hands dirty argument however did you actually think before posting the other two arguments or did you just add them for effect??

If you live in a cold climate and have gloves on and a message arrives you will still have to take your gloves off in order to swipe the screen anyway. And if the message is that urgent that you cant wait to see it then in most cases you would have to reply to it anyway...

And again, if you hop out of the pool or shower you would still have to swipe the screen before it asks you to authenticate. And even if you didnt have to swipe pray tell how on earth you would place your eye in front of the phone? One can always assume that you would have to bend over the phone to do so. And if that is the case then water form your hair would still drip on the phone anyway. Unless you take your head off before having a shower or going in the pool??

It never ceases to amaze me how Apple famboys come up with any brainless excuse to try and justify Apple's idiotic so called "technological advances".

Human beings look stupid enough when they are walking down the street and they have a telephone conversation (looking like they're talking to themselves). Imagine how stupid they would look holding their phone up to their eye every so often.

My $298 Lumia 950 has had this IRIS scan part of Windows Hello since ... Its great!!!
Takes about .6 sec to log me in. Works with my Maui Jim Brilliant (Polarized) Lenses
My $800 Sp4 M3 also does Intel Real Sense Hello Biometrics (Facial Scan)
Fingerprints are 4-5x less secure , all Windows Biometrics are stored locally on the devices.

I hardly need to log in anymore and no known malware on Windows Mobile too.

1) What if you live in hot climate and have dark, shady sunglasses on?
All jokes aside, if you live in cold climate, and you unlock iPhone using iris scanner, you still have to take the gloves off to use it, right?

2) & 3)
iPhone 7 ulocks even when my hands are little dirty or wet.

Funny about the sunglasses. The point is more technological options is nothing to complain about. It's not like it's life or death if you don't unlock your phone in a fraction of a second, but maybe you want to at least be able to answer a call with your eyes without removing your gloves.

Well I see they've run out of ideas so.

Are you running out of snark remarks? Your post doesn't make sense and you're incorrect. Wouldn't a new feature prove Apple is promoting new idea's and expanding? Which would be the opposite of "Running out of idea's."

It all depends how Apple implements this new security feature. It could serve more than one purpose.

I don't care how "cool" it is, I don't want to hold my phone up to my eye to scan it everytime I want to sign into my phone. I much rather use the fingerprint sensor for extra security.

Umm....you can swipe with a gloved finger (really depends on the material of your gloves)

You can't, however, really swipe with a wet finger out of the pool (maybe use your nose if it's dry?) *heheh*

It's "fanboys" not "famboys" were you thinking family or was that a type-o?

Sorry....in the future, we'll eventually have embedded tech, so we'll be typing mid-air and making gestures on a screen that only we can see (via the overlay that only really exists in our brains via the input we put on the optical nerve) - we'll all look like we're completely out of our minds. :) C'mon nanotech!!! :)

So what happens if you work a midnight shift 20 hrs and your eyes are all red and shot, will it say your not identified?

I can't help but laugh when people criticize Apple for not innovating. Apple rarely releases a product first. They tend to hang back and take a clunky piece of technology then make a version that works better than their competitors.

Apple didn't produce the first MP3 player, they didn't produce the first smart phone nor did they produce the first tablet but they managed to introduce groundbreaking products in those categories.

The smart phone market has matured. There aren't many groundbreaking features left to be introduced. The smartphone market has been interative for several generations now and that's highly unlikely to change anytime soon.

I'd rather Apple not do something first but instead focus on doing it well ... and yes I realize they've stumbled recently in "doing it well department" when it comes to their line of desktops and laptops.

I feel like Apple will nail it, just like the fingerprint reader. What's scary is that if the camera can detail your retina, it can pretty much watch you the whole time.

Ever had your retina examined by an optometrist or ophthalmologist? If you are near-sighted, you probably have since nearsightedness is the manifestation of a possibly over-sized eyeball that is under a bit more pressure than normal and retinal detachment is a possibility (the second cause of near-sightedness might be a cornea with steeper curves than normal). Anyway, the first thing the doctor has to do is dilate your pupils so that your retina is visible. The second thing the doctor has to do is shine a small sun in your eye so that your retina is visible.

Me thinks that the sensor on the iPhone will not be able to do either of these things and our retinas are still somewhat hidden from view.

Man you really took that one and ran with it!

1. Did you seriously try to argue that technological advances (however small), are bad? You probably still using the original iPhone because the Edge network was "good enough".
2. Not claiming to be an iris scanning expert but what says you have to hold this unreleased technology up to your eye for it to work? Why not just tilt phone toward your face as the screen lights up and you are in?
3. Alternate input methods are a good thing.
4. Maybe you are being discriminatory to those without fingers? Just because a technology works well for you doesn't mean everyone always has ten digits available. If it can scan the complexities of your eye at a distance, why would they not create at least some basic gestures with that technology?

Gimmicks aren't what the iPhone needs. Improved screen, battery life, speakers, GPU and camera pushes iPhones.

Tell me something that Apple actually INVENTED first? It never happened.

Apple is ALWAYS following others. Apple just does it better than others.

The iPhone wasn't the first touch screen phone, but it was the first one that mattered. The iPod wasn't the first device to put music in your pocket, but it did it best for the general non-techy people. And so on...
That's what I meant with making something different.

The more identification factors, the more secure the phone. As long as you're face is in the frame of the screen, the infrared diode will pick out your iris. Don't plan on it stopping here either - expect vein recognition to become common in the next few years too.

This kind of data? What your eye? Why, even if someone were to steal the data, tell me what other bits of information that you have protected by retinal scans. None? Thought not. So apart from your phone that is on your person. It's fairly harmless.

# paranoid much?

Yawn, no i'm not paranoid, I'm just not short sighted.

I don't over estimate the security of my technology or under estimate how good future hackers may get.

For example my bank uses touch ID to authenticate your ID, do you really naively belief that bank once given access to device won't say 'you can use retina data to log in'.

Or let me put it in your "do you know many banks were allowing this feature via smartphone before it became available in the UK; tell me..... NONE!!!

# oblivious much

Folks, it's an IRIS scanner, not a RETINA scanner. The iris is that pretty color pattern on the outside of the eye which an IR camera can easily photograph, night or day.

The sensor that Samsung used was reported to be instantaneous from any reasonable distance. Heck, you're going to be raising your phone up to look at it after it unlocks, anyway!

Sensor makers are reportedly ramping up production. Pretty soon a lot of phones will have one. It'll just be another way to unlock, along with the fingerprint sensor. Handy if that print sensor never worked for you, your hands are wet, you have gloves on, or whatever.
